    Stochastic Digital Circuits for Probabilistic Inference

    We introduce combinational stochastic logic, an abstraction that generalizes deterministic digital circuit design (based on Boolean logic gates) to the probabilistic setting. We show how this logic can be combined with techniques from contemporary digital design to generate stateless and stateful circuits for exact and approximate sampling from a range of probability distributions. We focus on Markov chain Monte Carlo algorithms for Markov random fields, using massively parallel circuits. We implement these circuits on commodity reconfigurable logic and estimate the resulting performance in time, space and price. Using our approach, these simple and general algorithms could be affordably run for thousands of iterations on models with hundreds of thousands of variables in real time

    Aim The aim of this prospective study was to examine the association between behavioural problems and medical and psychological outcomes in clinically treated children and adolescents with asthma. Methods Patients (n=134) were recruited from two high-altitude asthma clinics in Switzerland and one asthma clinic in the Netherlands. Outcome measures were Asthma Control Test (ACT), Paediatric Asthma Quality of Life Questionnaire (PAQLQ(S)), forced expiratory volume in 1sec (FEV1) and fractional concentration of exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO). Parents completed the Child Behaviour Checklist (CBCL) (predictor variable). Data were collected at the start and end of treatment. Multiple regression analysis was used while adjusting for demographic variables, clinic and length of stay. Results More severe internalizing behavioural problems were associated with less improvement of total quality of life (t=2.26, p=0.03) and the domains symptoms (t=2.04, p=0.04) and emotions (t=2.3, p=0.02) after clinical treatment. Behavioural problems were not associated with a change of lung function measurements (FEV1 and FeNO) and asthma control (ACT) during treatment. Conclusion A focus of healthcare professionals on the treatment of internalizing behavioural problems may optimize the quality of life in clinically treated youth with asthma

    Hollow-core fiber-based speckle displacement sensor

    The research enterprise towards achieving high-performance hollow-core photonic crystal fibers has led to impressive advancements in the latest years. Indeed, using this family of fibers becomes nowadays an overarching strategy for building a multitude of optical systems ranging from beam delivery devices to optical sources and sensors. In most applications, an effective single-mode operation is desired and, as such, the fiber microstructure or the light launching setups are typically designed for achieving such a behavior. Alternatively, one can identify the use of large-core multimode hollow-core fibers as a promising avenue for the development of new photonic devices. Thus, in this manuscript, we propose and demonstrate the utilization of a large-core tubular-lattice fiber for accomplishing a speckle-based displacement sensor, which has been built up by inserting and suitably dislocating a single-mode fiber inside the void core of the hollow fiber. The work reported herein encompasses both simulation and experimental studies on the evolution of the multimode intensity distributions within the device as well as the demonstration of a displacement sensor with an estimated resolution of 0.7 {\mu}m. We understand that this investigation identifies a new opportunity for the employment of large-core hollow fibers within the sensing framework hence widening the gamut of applications of this family of fibers

    Efficient numerical description of the dynamics of interacting multispecies quantum gases

    We present a highly efficient method for the numerical solution of coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations describing the evolution dynamics of a multi-species mixture of Bose-Einstein condensates in time-dependent potentials. This method, based on a moving and expanding reference frame, compares favorably to a more standard but much more computationally expensive solution based on a frozen frame. It allows an accurate description of the long-time behavior of interacting, multi-species quantum mixtures including the challenging problem of long free expansions relevant to microgravity and space experiments. We demonstrate a successful comparison to experimental measurements of a binary Rb-K mixture recently performed with the payload of a sounding rocket experiment

    Unifying Community Detection Across Scales from Genomes to Landscapes

    Biodiversity science encompasses multiple disciplines and biological scales from molecules to landscapes. Nevertheless, biodiversity data are often analyzed separately with discipline-specific methodologies, constraining resulting inferences to a single scale. To overcome this, we present a topic modeling framework to analyze community composition in cross-disciplinary datasets, including those generated from metagenomics, metabolomics, field ecology and remote sensing. Using topic models, we demonstrate how community detection in different datasets can inform the conservation of interacting plants and herbivores. We show how topic models can identify members of molecular, organismal and landscape-level communities that relate to wildlife health, from gut microbes to forage quality. We conclude with a future vision for how topic modeling can be used to design cross-scale studies that promote a holistic approach to detect, monitor and manage biodiversity
