    How Pure is Pure? Metal Complexation Studies Directed Towards Pharmaceutical Drug Purification

    Catalytic processes play critical roles in the modern-day industrial syntheses of many commonplace materials such as plastics, fuel production, electronics, and pharmaceuticals. Transition metal catalysts may become homogeneously embedded within solid nanomaterials during their synthetic scheme, which can result in deleterious effects on both the construction and durability of the material as well as its intended functionality. Traditional purification methods of these materials rely upon harsh reaction conditions that may either affect or allow for specific functionalities. Arylazothioformamide (ATF) ligands have proven to be a mild alternative for their ability to chelate these solid transition metal catalysts. This work will describe the synthetic steps towards developing a versatile library of ATF ligands, the characterization of those already synthesized, and initial chelation studies directed towards the purification of pharmaceutical drugs which employ catalytic processes in their production

    Dynamic effective mass of granular media

    We develop the concept of frequency dependent effective mass, M(omega), of jammed granular materials which occupy a rigid cavity to a filling fraction of 48%, the remaining volume being air of normal room condition or controlled humidity. The dominant features of M(omega) provide signatures of the dissipation of acoustic modes, elasticity and aging effects in the granular medium. We perform humidity controlled experiments and interpret the data in terms of a continuum model and a "trap" model of thermally activated capillary bridges at the contact points. The results suggest that attenuation in the granular materials is influenced significantly by the kinetics of capillary condensation between the asperities at the contacts.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure

    Intestinal colonization due to Escherichia coli ST131: Risk factors and prevalence

    Background Escherichia coli sequence type 131 (ST131) is a successful clonal group that has dramatically spread during the last decades and is considered an important driver for the rapid increase of quinolone resistance in E. coli. Methods Risk factors for rectal colonization by ST131 Escherichia coli (irrespective of ESBL production) were investigated in 64 household members (18 were colonized) and 54 hospital contacts (HC; 10 colonized) of 34 and 30 index patients with community and nosocomial infection due to these organisms, respectively, using multilevel analysis with a p limit of < 0.1. Result Colonization among household members was associated with the use of proton-pump inhibitors (PPI) by the household member (OR = 3.08; 95% CI: 0.88–10.8) and higher age of index patients (OR = 1.05; 95% CI; 1.01–1.10), and among HC, with being bed-ridden (OR = 21.1; 95% CI: 3.61–160.0) and having a urinary catheter (OR = 8.4; 95% CI: 0.87–76.9). Conclusion Use of PPI and variables associated with higher need of person-to-person contact are associated with increased risk of rectal colonization by ST131.     Why Effective Medium Theory Fails in Granular Materials

    Experimentally it is known that the bulk modulus, K, and shear modulus, \mu, of a granular assembly of elastic spheres increase with pressure, p, faster than the p^1/3 law predicted by effective medium theory (EMT) based on Hertz-Mindlin contact forces. To understand the origin of these discrepancies, we perform numerical simulations of granular aggregates under compression. We show that EMT can describe the moduli pressure dependence if one includes the increasing number of grain-grain contacts with p. Most important, the affine assumption (which underlies EMT), is found to be valid for K(p) but breakdown seriously for \mu(p). This explains why the experimental and numerical values of \mu(p) are much smaller than the EMT predictions.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures, http://polymer.bu.edu/~hmaks

    Food Reservoir for Escherichia coli Causing Urinary Tract Infections

    Closely related strains of Escherichia coli have been shown to cause extraintestinal infections in unrelated persons. This study tests whether a food reservoir may exist for these E. coli. Isolates from 3 sources over the same time period (2005–2007) and geographic area were compared. The sources comprised prospectively collected E. coli isolates from women with urinary tract infection (UTI) (n = 353); retail meat (n = 417); and restaurant/ready-to-eat foods (n = 74). E. coli were evaluated for antimicrobial drug susceptibility and O:H serotype and compared by using 4 different genotyping methods. We identified 17 clonal groups that contained E. coli isolates (n = 72) from >1 source. E. coli from retail chicken (O25:H4-ST131 and O114:H4-ST117) and honeydew melon (O2:H7-ST95) were indistinguishable from or closely related to E. coli from human UTIs. This study provides strong support for the role of food reservoirs or foodborne transmission in the dissemination of E. coli causing common community-acquired UTIs

    Molecular epidemiological analysis of Escherichia coli sequence type ST131 (O25:H4) and bla CTX-M-15among extended-spectrum-β- lactamase-producing E. coli from the United States, 2000 to 2009

    Escherichia coli sequence type ST131 (from phylogenetic group B2), often carrying the extended-spectrum-β-lactamase (ESBL) gene bla , is an emerging globally disseminated pathogen that has received comparatively little attention in the United States. Accordingly, a convenience sample of 351 ESBL-producing E. coli isolates from 15 U.S. centers (collected in 2000 to 2009) underwent PCR-based phylotyping and detection of ST131 and bla . A total of 200 isolates, comprising 4 groups of 50 isolates each that were (i) bla negative non-ST131, (ii) bla positive non-ST131, (iii) bla negative ST131, or (iv) bla positive ST131, also underwent virulence genotyping, antimicrobial susceptibility testing, and pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE). Overall, 201 (57%) isolates exhibited bla , whereas 165 (47%) were ST131. ST131 accounted for 56% of bla -positive-versus 35% of bla -negative isolates (

    Extraintestinal pathogenic E. coli (ExPEC) are the major aetiological agent of urinary tract infections (UTIs) in humans. The emergence of the CTX-M producing clone E. coli ST131 represents a major challenge to public health worldwide. A recent study on the metabolic potential of E. coli isolates demonstrated an association between the E. coli ST131 clone and enhanced utilisation of a panel of metabolic substrates. The studies presented here investigated the metabolic potential of ST131 and other major ExPEC ST isolates using 120 API test reagents and found that ST131 isolates demonstrated a lower metabolic activity for 5 of 120 biochemical tests in comparison to non-ST131 ExPEC isolates. Furthermore, comparative phenotypic microarray analysis showed a lack of specific metabolic profile for ST131 isolates countering the suggestion that these bacteria are metabolically fitter and therefore more successful human pathogens

    This paper provides a hermeneutic approach on Pink Floyds popular song "Time" from 1973s album Dark Side Of The Moon. The primary aim of this examination is the analysis of the conceptual connection of music and lyrics in this song. Moreover, derivation of semantic meaning potential is used to form an intersubjectively verifiable song interpretation. All in all, the main results of this analysis suggest a close connection of the songs musical parameters, i.e. form, harmony, melody, rhythm as well as sound, and its lyrical theme: (1) first the musique concrète in the songs introduction and the subsequent instrumental passage establish evident semantic relations to the following lyrical theme of fleeting time, (2) a devils circle of transitoriness of life is presented in the songs lyrics and is musically mirrored by periodic formal and harmonic repetitions, (3) the ambivalence of the bridges negative lyrics in combination with the sweet melodic thirds in the vocals suggests a melancholic atmosphere, (4) the lyrics description of a human life from birth to death is reflected in the formal structure and the harmony of »Time« as well as in the conceptual arrangement of Dark Side Of The Moons first LP-side from »Speak To Me« to »The Great Gig In The Sky«
