Star-Forming or Starbursting? The Ultraviolet Conundrum
Compared to starburst galaxies, normal star forming galaxies have been shown
to display a much larger dispersion of the dust attenuation at fixed reddening
through studies of the IRX-beta diagram (the IR/UV ratio "IRX" versus the UV
color "beta"). To investigate the causes of this larger dispersion and attempt
to isolate second parameters, we have used GALEX UV, ground-based optical, and
Spitzer infrared imaging of 8 nearby galaxies, and examined the properties of
individual UV and 24 micron selected star forming regions. We concentrated on
star-forming regions, in order to isolate simpler star formation histories than
those that characterize whole galaxies. We find that 1) the dispersion is not
correlated with the mean age of the stellar populations, 2) a range of dust
geometries and dust extinction curves are the most likely causes for the
observed dispersion in the IRX-beta diagram 3) together with some potential
dilution of the most recent star-forming population by older unrelated bursts,
at least in the case of star-forming regions within galaxies, 4) we also
recover some general characteristics of the regions, including a tight positive
correlation between the amount of dust attenuation and the metal content.
Although generalizing our results to whole galaxies may not be immediate, the
possibility of a range of dust extinction laws and geometries should be

Validation of Claims Data Algorithms to Identify Nonmelanoma Skin Cancer
Health maintenance organization (HMO) administrative databases have been used as sampling frames for ascertaining nonmelanoma skin cancer (NMSC). However, because of the lack of tumor registry information on these cancers, these ascertainment methods have not been previously validated. NMSC cases arising from patients served by a staff model medical group and diagnosed between 1 January 2007 and 31 December 2008 were identified from claims data using three ascertainment strategies. These claims data cases were then compared with NMSC identified using natural language processing (NLP) of electronic pathology reports (EPRs), and sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive values were calculated. Comparison of claims data–ascertained cases with the NLP demonstrated sensitivities ranging from 48 to 65% and specificities from 85 to 98%, with ICD-9-CM ascertainment demonstrating the highest case sensitivity, although the lowest specificity. HMO health plan claims data had a higher specificity than all-payer claims data. A comparison of EPR and clinic log registry cases showed a sensitivity of 98% and a specificity of 99%. Validation of administrative data to ascertain NMSC demonstrates respectable sensitivity and specificity, although NLP ascertainment was superior. There is a substantial difference in cases identified by NLP compared with claims data, suggesting that formal surveillance efforts should be considered
Modeling prestressed ceramic and its effect on ballistic performance
Abstract This article presents computed results for the responses of ceramic targets, with and without prestress, subjected to projectile impact. Also presented is a computational technique to include prestress. Thin and thick ceramic target configurations are used to understand the effect prestressing has on ballistic performance. For both targets two prestress levels (small and large), and two prestress states (radial and hydrostatic) are investigated. The small prestress is similar in magnitude to values obtained experimentally and the large prestress is approximately the maximum prestress the confinement can produce (determined computationally). The targets are subjected to projectile impact and the resulting ballistic responses are evaluated. In all cases prestressing the ceramic enhanced the ballistic performance, although the effect of the different prestress conditions on the ballistic response was not always obvious.
A Nonperturbative Eliasson's Reducibility Theorem
This paper is concerned with discrete, one-dimensional Schr\"odinger
operators with real analytic potentials and one Diophantine frequency. Using
localization and duality we show that almost every point in the spectrum admits
a quasi-periodic Bloch wave if the potential is smaller than a certain constant
which does not depend on the precise Diophantine conditions. The associated
first-order system, a quasi-periodic skew-product, is shown to be reducible for
almost all values of the energy. This is a partial nonperturbative
generalization of a reducibility theorem by Eliasson. We also extend
nonperturbatively the genericity of Cantor spectrum for these Schr\"odinger
operators. Finally we prove that in our setting, Cantor spectrum implies the
existence of a -set of energies whose Schr\"odinger cocycle is not
reducible to constant coefficients
Is there a future for genome-editing technologies in conservation?
In a recent review, Pimm et al. (2015) highlight emerging technologies in protecting biodiversity. While their list is noteworthy, the authors’ exclusion of innovations in genomic research, with the exception of single-species DNA barcoding methods, was surprising given recent advances in genome-editing technology and its potential application to conservation. Taylor & Gemmell (2016) address that deficiency in a subsequent commentary identifying three avenues where emerging genomic technologies have great potential for increasing our ability to conserve biodiversity. Those areas include the use of next-generation sequencing technologies and methods such as RADseq for monitoring genetic diversity, effective population size, and introgression (Andrews et al., 2016); the use of environmental DNA (eDNA) and metabarcoding approaches to map species occurrence and interaction networks (Evans et al., 2016); and the use of genomic data and gene-editing technology to identify and alter regions of the genome that may impact fitness and limit survival in endangered taxa (Taylor & Gemmell, 2016). Here, we extend that the theme with additional discussion on how genome-editing technologies can benefit the conservation of threatened and endangered species
