Vitamin C as a weapon against cancer
Since vitamin C (ascorbic acid) has been discovered over 80 years ago, it is known as a “miracle
pill” because it possesses a lot of properties which are extremely essential for correct functioning of
the organism. For a long time it has been also debated the usage of the ascorbic acid in prevention
and cancer treatment. Literature reviewed in this paper provides many valuable information about
mechanisms of anticancer effect of the vitamin C and about potential ability of ascorbic acid application
in fight against cancer. That includes: parenteral administration of pharmacological doses
of vitamin C, its beneficial influence on the final effect of chemo- and radiotherapy and its highly
promising co-administration with other active compounds.
Onkol. Prak. Klin.
Zebrane i przedstawione w niniejszej pracy dane z piśmiennictwa dostarczają wielu cennych informacji

Materiał i metody: Dokonano przeglądu dokumentacji pacjentów. Przeanalizowano dokumentację 124 pacjentów w wieku od 37 do
91 lat wypisanych z Oddziału Rehabilitacji Neurologicznej w okresie od 01.01.2012 do 31.07.2013. Obecność otępienia i depresji
stwierdzano na podstawie klinicznej diagnozy postawionej przez psychologów posiłkujących się testami: Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) i Krótkim Testem Stanu Psychicznego (KTSP) oraz skalą Hamiltona i skalą Becka.
Wyniki: Otępienie stwierdzano u 46% pacjentów po udarze mózgu usprawnianych w Oddziale Rehabilitacji Neurologicznej Ośrodka
Rehabilitacji Narządu Ruchu „Krzeszowice”, a depresję u blisko 39%. U osób w wieku powyżej 65 lat stwierdzono większą szansę wystąpienia otępienia w porównaniu do osób młodszych (OR=5,91; 95%CI: 2,52-13,89). Występowanie afazji było związane z pięciokrotnie większą szansą wystąpienia otępienia (OR=5,74; 95%CI: 1,93-17,11).
Introduction: In addition to physical impairment, post-stroke patients also display emotional and cognitive disorders, e.g., depression
and dementia, which may result from a stroke or occur independently of it. Because these disorders affect treatment outcome, the
risk of a subsequent stroke, and mortality, they should be taken into account during rehabilitation.
Aim: The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of depression and dementia among post-stroke patients and to assess the correlation between these disorders and sociodemographic and clinical characteristics.
Material and methods: Retrospective analysis of medical documentation of 124 post‑stroke patients hospitalised in a neurological rehabilitation ward from 1 January 2012 to 31 July 2013 was conducted. Depression and dementia were diagnosed by psychologists using
the Mini-Mental State Examination, Short Test of Mental State, Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression, and Beck Depression Inventory.
Results: a total of 46% of post-stroke patients rehabilitated in the Krzeszowice Rehabilitation Centre were diagnosed with dementia,
and 39% were diagnosed with depression. Persons aged over 65 years had a higher chance of dementia compared to younger persons
(OR=5.91, 95%CI: 2.52–13.89). Aphasia correlated with a five times higher chance of dementia (OR=5.74, 95%CI: 1.93–17.11).
Sex, education, and other analysed clinical and sociodemographic characteristics did not correlate with dementia. No correlation was
found between depression and dementia, age, sex, education, number of inhabitants, the type, location and number of strokes, time
since stroke, hypertension, diabetes, or aphasia.
Conclusions: Dementia and depression were diagnosed in a group of post-stroke patients. Dementia was more prevalent among persons aged over 65 years and persons with aphasia. Because depression and dementia increase the risk of a subsequent stroke and mortality in post-stroke patients, both disorders should be diagnosed and treated early to prevent their effects
Cell cycle regulation of embryonic stem cells and mouse embryonic fibroblasts lacking functional Pax7
The transcription factor Pax7 plays a key role during embryonic myogenesis and in adult organisms in that
it sustains the proper function of satellite cells, which serve as adult skeletal muscle stem cells. Recently
we have shown that lack of Pax7 does not prevent the myogenic differentiation of pluripotent stem cells.
In the current work we show that the absence of functional Pax7 in differentiating embryonic stem cells
modulates cell cycle facilitating their proliferation. Surprisingly, deregulation of Pax7 function also
positively impacts at the proliferation of mouse embryonic fibroblasts. Such phenotypes seem to be
executed by modulating the expression of positive cell cycle regulators, such as cyclin E
Procesy kształtowania nowoczesnej gospodarki
Publikacja recenzowana / Peer-reviewed publicationZE WSTĘPU: Zainteresowania naukowe pracowników Wydziału Zarządzania i Marketingu Krakowskiej Szkoły Wyższej im. A.F. Modrzewskiego obejmują szerokie spektrum problemów z zakresu ekonomii i zarządzania.
i technologiczne.
ułatwiających funkcjonowanie i rozwój przedsiębiorstw. Ich elementem jest
przepływ informacji wewnątrz firmy, a także relacje partnerskie z kooperantami
i klientami.
Piąta grupa prac prezentuje doświadczenia w dziedzinie zarządzania edukacją
w krajach Unii Europejskiej. Proces Boloński wymusza działania dostosowawcze podmiotów realizujących zadania w dziedzinie nauki i edukacji
do wspólnych standardów.
wykładowcy i nauczyciela.
akademickiego 2005/06. Ze względu na ograniczony rozmiar tej publikacji,
zagadnienia związane z zarządzaniem w aspekcie jakości i ekologii będą
przedmiotem osobnego opracowania

The spongiolite casting mould at the site No. 20 in Przemyśl. Research results
Przemyśl 20 site is an important research point of the early medieval city. Archaeological research confirmed the existence of intensive settlement before this time. During field works, two parts of a casting mold for the production of axes, 17 cm long, 7.5 cm wide and 4 cm thick, were found at the bottom of the settlement layer. On the discovered form, no traces of copper were observed, on the outside were visible signs of burnout. This form is the only find of this type in Poland and ascibed to the Mierzanowice culture. petrographic tests performed using polarizing and scanning microscopes as well as microapaleontological examinations allow the identification of the mold material as spongiolite (spiculite), most likely from the vicinity of przemyśl, where the outcrops of this rock are located. Considering the results of micropaleontological research, it is not possible to unequivocally interpret whether the material from which the foundry mold was made comes from works classified as radiolar shale formations from Barnasiówka, or from silicoclastic turbidites rich in sponge spicules. with high probability it can be stated that this material comes from the upper part of the Lgota beds covering the abovementioned lithostratigraphic units. The type of raw material used meets the conditions for using it as a casting mold. The obtained data allow to conclude about the local production of this form
Adipokines and parameters of peritoneal membrane transport in newly started peritoneal dialysis patients
Aim: Adiponectin and leptin are two adipokines playing important roles in the regulation of body weight, appetite, carbohydrate and lipid metabolism. In patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) adipokines accumulate in serum due to reduced renal clearance. Since adipokines have pleiotropic actions, the adipokine balance may have an impact on peritoneal membrane transport. The aim of this study was to assess whether serum adiponectin and leptin levels were related to peritoneal transport and residual renal function (RRF) in newly started peritoneal dialysis patients. Methods: 25 clinically stable patients, 4 to 6 weeks after the onset of PD, were included in the study. For each patient clinical and laboratory data were reviewed and standard PET test was performed. Serum adiponectin and leptin concentrations were determined and leptin/adiponectin (L/A) ratio was calculated. Results: Serum adiponectin correlated negatively with weight, BMI and glucose concentration. Serum leptin and L/A ratio correlated positively with BMI. Serum adiponectin correlated positively with dialysate to plasma (D/P) creatinine ratio and ultrafiltration in PET test. Serum leptin level and L/A ratio correlated strongly negatively with peritoneal creatinine clearance. Conclusions: Serum adiponectin concentration is positively associated with baseline solute transport. Leptin concentration and L/A ratio are negatively associated with dialysis adequacy in newly started PD patients
