    Numerical analysis of acoustic wave propagation in layered carbon nanofiber reinforced polymer composites

    Polymer composites reinforced by carbon nanofibers (CNFs) in the form of paper sheet show significant vibration and acoustic damping improvement when compared to pure matrix materials. Without looking into the microscopic energy dissipation mechanisms, this paper analyzes the wave propagation in the composites from a macroscopic point of view. The CNF nanocomposites in this study were treated as stacking of alternating layers of pure polymer and CNF reinforced polymer. Analyses of acoustic wave propagation focused oil revealing the effects of acoustic impedance discontinuity at the interfaces of the layered structure. Plane wave transmission coefficient has been calculated as a function of the number of the layer repeats and thickness at different wave frequencies. Oscillations in the transmission coefficient have been observed when the acoustic wavelength is oil the same order of the bilayer thickness, indicating the possibility of designing the nanocomposite structure to optimize noise reduction characteristics. The numerical analysis converges with effective media theory when acoustic wavelength is much larger than the layer thickness

    Exogenous brassinosteroids alleviate calcium deficiency-induced tip-burn by maintaining cell wall structural stability and higher photosynthesis in mini Chinese Cabbage

    Tip-burn has seriously affected the yield, quality and commodity value of mini Chinese cabbage. Calcium (Ca2+) deficiency is the main cause of tip-burn. In order to investigate whether exogenous brassinosteroids (BRs) can alleviate tip-burn induced by calcium (Ca2+) deficiency and its mechanism, in this study, Ca2+ deficiency in nutrient solution was used to induced tip-burn, and then distilled water and BRs were sprayed on leaves to observe the tip-burn incidence of mini Chinese cabbage. The tip-burn incidence and disease index, leaf area, fluorescence parameters (Fv/Fm, NPQ, qP andφPSII) and gas exchange parameters (Tr, Pn, Gs and Ci), pigment contents, cell wall components, mesophyll cell ultrastructure and the expression of genes related to chlorophyll degradation were measured. The results showed that exogenous BRs reduced the tip-burn incidence rate and disease index of mini Chinese cabbage, and the tip-burn incidence rate reached the highest on the ninth day after treatment. Exogenous BRs increased the contents of cellulose, hemifiber, water-soluble pectin in Ca2+ deficiency treated leaves, maintaining the stability of cell wall structure. In addition, BRs increased photosynthetic rate by increasing the activities of Ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (Rubisco) and fructose 1,6-bisphosphatase (FBPase) related to Calvin cycle, maintaining relatively complete chloroplast structure and higher chlorophyll content via down-regulating the expression of BrPPH1 and BrPAO1 genes related to chlorophyll degradation.     Gobi agriculture: an innovative farming system that increases energy and water use efficiencies. A review

    International audienceAbstractIn populated regions/countries with fast economic development, such as Africa, China, and India, arable land is rapidly shrinking due to urban construction and other industrial uses for the land. This creates unprecedented challenges to produce enough food to satisfy the increased food demands. Can the millions of desert-like, non-arable hectares be developed for food production? Can the abundantly available solar energy be used for crop production in controlled environments, such as solar-based greenhouses? Here, we review an innovative cultivation system, namely “Gobi agriculture.” We find that the innovative Gobi agriculture system has six unique characteristics: (i) it uses desert-like land resources with solar energy as the only energy source to produce fresh fruit and vegetables year-round, unlike conventional greenhouse production where the energy need is satisfied via burning fossil fuels or electrical consumption; (ii) clusters of individual cultivation units are made using locally available materials such as clay soil for the north walls of the facilities; (iii) land productivity (fresh produce per unit land per year) is 10–27 times higher and crop water use efficiency 20–35 times greater than traditional open-field, irrigated cultivation systems; (iv) crop nutrients are provided mainly via locally-made organic substrates, which reduce synthetic inorganic fertilizer use in crop production; (v) products have a lower environmental footprint than open-field cultivation due to solar energy as the only energy source and high crop yields per unit of input; and (vi) it creates rural employment, which improves the stability of rural communities. While this system has been described as a “Gobi-land miracle” for socioeconomic development, many challenges need to be addressed, such as water constraints, product safety, and ecological implications. We suggest that relevant policies are developed to ensure that the system boosts food production and enhances rural socioeconomics while protecting the fragile ecological environment

    DC32, a Dihydroartemisinin Derivative, Ameliorates Collagen-Induced Arthritis Through an Nrf2-p62-Keap1 Feedback Loop

    Artemisinins have been reported to have diverse functions, such as antimalaria, anticancer, anti-inflammation, and immunoregulation activities. DC32 [(9α,12α-dihydroartemisinyl) bis(2′-chlorocinnmate)], a dihydroartemisinin derivative possessing potent immunosuppressive properties, was synthesized in our previous study. Collagen-induced arthritis (CIA) in DBA/1 mice and inflammatory model in NIH-3T3 cells were established to evaluate the effect of DC32 on RA and discover the underlying mechanisms. The results showed that DC32 could markedly alleviate footpad inflammation, reduce cartilage degradation, activate the Nrf2/HO-1 signaling pathway, and increase the transcription of p62 in DBA/1 mice with CIA. Further mechanistic exploration with NIH-3T3 cells indicated that DC32 could increase the transcription, expression, and nuclear translocation of Nrf2. In addition, DC32 promoted degradation of Keap1 protein and upregulated HO-1 and p62 expression. Furthermore, the effect of DC32 on Keap1 degradation could be prevented by p62 knockdown using siRNA. Administration of DC32 could inhibit the activation of Akt/mTOR and ERK, and pretreatment of NIH-3T3 cells with the autophagy inhibitor 3-methyladenine (3-MA) attenuated the degradation of Keap1 induced by DC32. These results suggest that DC32 inhibits the degradation of Nrf2 by promoting p62-mediated selective autophagy and that p62 upregulation contributed to a positive feedback loop for persistent activation of Nrf2. In summary, our present study demonstrated that DC32 significantly suppressed rheumatoid arthritis (RA) via the Nrf2-p62-Keap1 feedback loop by increasing the mRNA and protein levels of Nrf2 and inducing p62 expression. These findings provide new mechanisms for artemisinins in RA treatment and a potential strategy for discovering antirheumatic drugs

    Variation of cataract surgery costs in four different graded providers of China

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>China has the largest population of cataract patients in the world. However, the cataract surgery rate per million remains low in China. We carried out a survey on costs of cataract surgery from four different graded providers in China and analyzed differences in cost among these clinics.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>1,189 patients were recruited for the study in four eye clinics, located in two provinces, Guangdong province in southern China and Hubei province in central China. The average cost of each cataract surgery episode was calculated including cost of intraocular lens, cost of drugs and facility cost. We also collected information on reimbursement and disposable annual income of local residents.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Mean total cost per cataract intervention of four different providers varied considerably, ranging from US1,293inUnionHospitaltoUS 1,293 in Union Hospital to US 536 in Jingshan County Hospital. In all providers, except for Jingshan County Hospital, the cost exceeded annual disposable income of local rural residents. As to the proportion of patients with reimbursement, the figure for Union Hospital was only 36%, while for other three clinics it was more than 60%. There was a significant difference between mean reimbursement ratios, with the highest ratio in Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center being 71%.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Significant differences in costs of cataract surgery were found among the 4 different graded providers. A part of the cost was borne by patients. Proportion of patients with reimbursement and mean reimbursement ratios were higher in economically developed regions than in economically developing regions. Much more financial support should be directed into the rural New Cooperative Medical Scheme to raise the reimbursement ratio in rural China.</p

    Identification of serum biomarkers of hepatocarcinoma through liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry-based metabonomic method

    Late diagnosis of hepatocarcinoma (HCC) is one of the most primary factors for the poor survival of patients. Thereby, identification of sensitive and specific biomarkers for HCC early diagnosis is of great importance in biological medicine to date. In the present study, serum metabolites of the HCC patients and healthy controls were investigated using the improved liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LC/MS). A wavelet-based method was utilized to find and align peaks of LC–MS. The characteristic peaks were selected by performing a two-sample t test statistics (p value <0.05). Clustering analysis based on principal component analysis showed a clear separation between HCC patients and healthy individuals. The serum metabolite, namely 1-methyladenosine, was identified as the characteristic metabolite for HCC. Moreover, receiver–operator curves were calculated with 1-methyladenosine and/or alpha fetal protein (AFP). The higher area under curve value was achieved in 1-methyladenosine group than AFP group (0.802 vs. 0.592), and the diagnostic model combining 1-methyladenosine with AFP exhibited significant improved sensitivity, which could identify those patients who missed the diagnosis of HCC by determining serum AFP alone. Overall, these results suggested that LC/MS-based metabonomic study is a potent and promising strategy for identifying novel biomarkers of HCC

    Missing value imputation for microarray gene expression data using histone acetylation information

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>It is an important pre-processing step to accurately estimate missing values in microarray data, because complete datasets are required in numerous expression profile analysis in bioinformatics. Although several methods have been suggested, their performances are not satisfactory for datasets with high missing percentages.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The paper explores the feasibility of doing missing value imputation with the help of gene regulatory mechanism. An imputation framework called histone acetylation information aided imputation method (HAIimpute method) is presented. It incorporates the histone acetylation information into the conventional KNN(<it>k</it>-nearest neighbor) and LLS(local least square) imputation algorithms for final prediction of the missing values. The experimental results indicated that the use of acetylation information can provide significant improvements in microarray imputation accuracy. The HAIimpute methods consistently improve the widely used methods such as KNN and LLS in terms of normalized root mean squared error (NRMSE). Meanwhile, the genes imputed by HAIimpute methods are more correlated with the original complete genes in terms of Pearson correlation coefficients. Furthermore, the proposed methods also outperform GOimpute, which is one of the existing related methods that use the functional similarity as the external information.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>We demonstrated that the using of histone acetylation information could greatly improve the performance of the imputation especially at high missing percentages. This idea can be generalized to various imputation methods to facilitate the performance. Moreover, with more knowledge accumulated on gene regulatory mechanism in addition to histone acetylation, the performance of our approach can be further improved and verified.</p
