VS-CAM: Vertex Semantic Class Activation Mapping to Interpret Vision Graph Neural Network

Graph convolutional neural network (GCN) has drawn increasing attention and attained good performance in various computer vision tasks, however, there lacks a clear interpretation of GCN's inner mechanism. For standard convolutional neural networks (CNNs), class activation mapping (CAM) methods are commonly used to visualize the connection between CNN's decision and image region by generating a heatmap. Nonetheless, such heatmap usually exhibits semantic-chaos when these CAMs are applied to GCN directly. In this paper, we proposed a novel visualization method particularly applicable to GCN, Vertex Semantic Class Activation Mapping (VS-CAM). VS-CAM includes two independent pipelines to produce a set of semantic-probe maps and a semantic-base map, respectively. Semantic-probe maps are used to detect the semantic information from semantic-base map to aggregate a semantic-aware heatmap. Qualitative results show that VS-CAM can obtain heatmaps where the highlighted regions match the objects much more precisely than CNN-based CAM. The quantitative evaluation further demonstrates the superiority of VS-CAM.Comment: 10 pages, 10 figure

Recent Advances in Heterogeneous Catalytic Hydrogenation of CO2 to Methane

With the accelerating industrialization, urbanization process, and continuously upgrading of consumption structures, the CO2 from combustion of coal, oil, natural gas, and other hydrocarbon fuels is unbelievably increased over the past decade. As an important carbon resource, CO2 gained more and more attention because of its converting properties to lower hydrocarbon, such as methane, methanol, and formic acid. Among them, CO2 methanation is considered to be an extremely efficient method due to its high CO2 conversion and CH4 selectivity. However, the CO2 methanation process requires high reaction temperatures (300–400°C), which limits the theoretical yield of methane. Thus, it is desirable to find a new strategy for the efficient conversion of CO2 to methane at relatively low reaction temperature, and the key issue is using the catalysts in the process. The advances in the noble metal catalysts, Ni-based catalysts, and Co-based catalysts, for catalytic hydrogenation CO2 to methane are reviewed in this paper, and the effects of the supports and the addition of second metal on CO2 methanation as well as the reaction mechanisms are focused

A versatile route to fabricate single atom catalysts with high chemoselectivity

Preparation of single atom catalysts (SACs) is of broad interest to materials scientists and chemists but remains a formidable challenge. Herein, we develop an efficient approach to synthesize SACs via a precursor-dilution strategy, in which metalloporphyrin (MTPP) with target metals are co-polymerized with diluents (tetraphenylporphyrin, TPP), followed by pyrolysis to N-doped porous carbon supported SACs (M1/N-C). Twenty-four different SACs, including noble metals and non-noble metals, are successfully prepared. In addition, the synthesis of a series of catalysts with different surface atom densities, bi-metallic sites, and metal aggregation states are achieved. This approach shows remarkable adjustability and generality, providing sufficient freedom to design catalysts at atomic-scale and explore the unique catalytic properties of SACs. As an example, we show that the prepared Pt1/N-C exhibits superior chemoselectivity and regioselectivity in hydrogenation. It only converts terminal alkynes to alkenes while keeping other reducible functional groups such as alkenyl, nitro group, and even internal alkyne intact

Highly efficient mixed-metal spinel cobaltite electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction

Cation substitution in spinel cobaltites (e.g., ACo2O4, in which A = Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, or Zn) is a promising strategy to precisely modulate their electronic structure/properties and thus im-prove the corresponding electrochemical performance for water splitting. However, the fun-damental principles and mechanisms are not fully understood. This research aims to systemat-ically investigate the effects of cation substitution in spinel cobaltites derived from mixed-metal-organic frameworks on the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Among the obtained ACo2O4 catalysts, FeCo2O4 showed excellent OER performance with a current density of 10 mAcm–2 at an overpotential of 164 mV in alkaline media. Both theoretical calculations and ex-perimental results demonstrate that the Fe substitution in the crystal lattice of ACo2O4 can sig-nificantly accelerate charge transfer, thereby achieving enhanced electrochemical properties. The crystal field of spinel ACo2O4, which determines the valence states of cations A, is identified as the key factor to dictate the OER performance of these spinel cobaltites

Genome-wide association studies (GWASs) have identified hundreds of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with cancer risk, several of which have shown pleiotropic effects across cancers. Therefore, we performed a systematic cross-cancer pleiotropic analysis to detect the effects of GWAS-identified variants from non-lung cancers on lung cancer risk in 12,843 cases and 12,639 controls from four lung cancer GWASs. The overall association between variants in each cancer and risk of lung cancer was explored using sequential kernel association test (SKAT) analysis. For single variant analysis, we combined the result of specific study using fixed-effect meta-analysis. We performed functional exploration of significant associations based on features from public databases. To further detect the biological mechanism underlying identified observations, pathway enrichment analysis were conducted with R package “clusterProfiler.” SNP-set analysis revealed the overall associations between variants of 8 cancer types and lung cancer risk. Single variant analysis identified 6 novel SNPs related to lung cancer risk after multiple correction (Pfdr &lt; 0.10), including rs1707302 (1p34.1, OR = 0.93, 95% CI: 0.90–0.97, P = 7.60 × 10−4), rs2516448 (6p21.33, OR = 1.07, 95% CI: 1.03–1.11, P = 1.00 × 10−3), rs3869062 (6p22.1, OR = 0.91, 95% CI: 0.86–0.96, P = 7.10 × 10−4), rs174549 (11q12.2, OR = 0.90, 95% CI: 0.87–0.94, P = 1.00 × 10−7), rs7193541 (16q23.1, OR = 0.93, 95% CI: 0.90–0.96, P = 1.20 × 10−4), and rs8064454 (17q12, OR = 1.07, 95% CI: 1.03–1.11, P = 4.30 × 10−4). The eQTL analysis and functional annotation suggested that these variants might modify lung cancer susceptibility through regulating the expression of related genes. Pathway enrichment analysis showed that genes modulated by these variants play important roles in cancer carcinogenesis. Our findings demonstrate the pleiotropic associations between non-lung cancer susceptibility loci and lung cancer risk, providing important insights into the shared mechanisms of carcinogenesis across cancers.<br/

Introducción: Understanding risk perception that hinges on health-protective behaviors is central to strategies for prevention. Aim: To classify the pattern of potential risk of worker exposure to SARS-CoV-2, and to assess association with risk perception among non-healthcare workers Methods: In a multi-site, qualitative study, we conducted individual in-depth interviews and mini focus group discussions with employees, managerial staff and self-employees from Hong Kong (n=87), Nanjing (n=60), and Wuhan (n=60) between June 2020 and March 2021. Audios were transcribed and categorized by themes following Grounded Theory approach. Results: We identified seven major types of potential risk exposure pattern by category of parameters. The risk perceptions decreased among Type A workers, working at fixed location in office, and no/little contacts with clients/customers, and increased among workers having the concern of asymptomatic characteristics of SAR-CoV-2, daily contact with large size of the unfamiliar crowds, unhygienic behaviors of clients/customers, and use of public transportation to commute to work. The notion that the sense of safety deriving from the implementation and adherence with safety measures despite stringency, and trust with the government was most frequently reported in Nanjing and Wuhan. Conclusion: Study examines COVID-19 risks and risk perceptions among non-healthcare workers in three cities. Variations in risk perceptions were found, influenced by factors such as work patterns and safety measures. Trust in government and concerns about international contacts were common themes. The findings emphasize the need for targeted interventions, mental health support, and inclusive policies to address occupational health disparities and promote workplace safety. Buddhist Vegetarian Restaurants and the Changing Meanings of Meat in Urban China

This article charts the changing meanings of meat in contemporary urban China and explores the role played by Buddhist vegetarian restaurants in shaping these changes. In Kunming, meat has long been a sign of prosperity and status. Its accessibility marked the successes of the economic reforms. Yet Kunmingers were increasingly concerned about excessive meat consumption and about the safety and quality of the meat supply. Buddhist vegetarian restaurants provided spaces where people could share meat-free meals and discuss and develop their concerns about meat-eating. While similar to and influenced by secular, Western vegetarianisms, the central role of Buddhism was reflected in discourses on karmic retribution for taking life and in a non-confrontational approach that sought to accommodate these discourses with the importance of meat in Chinese social life. Finally, the vegetarian restaurants spoke to middle-class projects of self-cultivation, and by doing so potentially challenged associations between meat-eating and social status

Sequence variations in DNA repair gene XPC is associated with lung cancer risk in a Chinese population: a case-control study

<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The nucleotide excision repair (NER) protein, xeroderma pigmentosum C (XPC), participates in recognizing DNA lesions and initiating DNA repair in response to DNA damage. Because mutations in <it>XPC </it>cause a high risk of cancer in XP patients, we hypothesized that inherited sequence variations in <it>XPC </it>may alter DNA repair and thus susceptibility to cancer.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>In this hospital-based case-control study, we investigated five <it>XPC </it>tagging, common single nucleotide polymorphisms (tagging SNPs) in 1,010 patients with newly diagnosed lung cancer and 1,011 matched cancer free controls in a Chinese population.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>In individual tagging SNP analysis, we found that rs3731055<it>AG+AA </it>variant genotypes were associated with a significantly decreased risk of lung adenocarcinoma [adjusted odds ratio (OR), 0.71; 95% confidence interval (CI), 0.56–0.90] but an increased risk of small cell carcinomas [adjusted OR, 1.79; 95% CI, 1.05–3.07]. Furthermore, we found that haplotype <it>ACCCA </it>was associated with a decreased risk of lung adenocarcinoma [OR, 0.78; 95% CI, 0.62–0.97] but an increased risk of small cell carcinomas [OR, 1.68; 95% CI, 1.04–2.71], which reflected the presence of rs3731055<it>A </it>allele in this haplotype. Further stratified analysis revealed that the protective effect of rs3731055<it>AG+AA </it>on risk of lung adenocarcinoma was more evident among young subjects (age ≤ 60) and never smokers.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>These results suggest that inherited sequence variations in <it>XPC </it>may modulate risk of lung cancer, especially lung adenocarcinoma, in Chinese populations. However, these findings need to be verified in larger confirmatory studies with more comprehensively selected tagging SNPs.</p

Genetic factors play an important role in the etiology of both sporadic and familial breast cancer. We aimed to discover novel genetic susceptibility loci for breast cancer. We conducted a four-stage genome-wide association study (GWAS) in 19,091 cases and 20,606 controls of East-Asian descent including Chinese, Korean, and Japanese women. After analyzing 690,947 SNPs in 2,918 cases and 2,324 controls, we evaluated 5,365 SNPs for replication in 3,972 cases and 3,852 controls. Ninety-four SNPs were further evaluated in 5,203 cases and 5,138 controls, and finally the top 22 SNPs were investigated in up to 17,423 additional subjects (7,489 cases and 9,934 controls). SNP rs9485372, near the TGF-β activated kinase (TAB2) gene in chromosome 6q25.1, showed a consistent association with breast cancer risk across all four stages, with a P-value of 3.8×10−12 in the combined analysis of all samples. Adjusted odds ratios (95% confidence intervals) were 0.89 (0.85–0.94) and 0.80 (0.75–0.86) for the A/G and A/A genotypes, respectively, compared with the genotype G/G. SNP rs9383951 (P = 1.9×10−6 from the combined analysis of all samples), located in intron 5 of the ESR1 gene, and SNP rs7107217 (P = 4.6×10−7), located at 11q24.3, also showed a consistent association in each of the four stages. This study provides strong evidence for a novel breast cancer susceptibility locus represented by rs9485372, near the TAB2 gene (6q25.1), and identifies two possible susceptibility loci located in the ESR1 gene and 11q24.3, respectively
