    Mental wellbeing in non-ambulant youth with neuromuscular disorders: What makes the difference?

    The physical and social challenges associated with neuromuscular disorders may impact mental wellbeing in non-ambulant youth during the more vulnerable period of adolescence. This cross-sectional survey investigated non-ambulant youths’ mental wellbeing and relationships with physical health, participation and social factors. The conceptual model was the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF). Thirty-seven youth aged 13 – 22 years old (mean age 17.4 years; n = 30 male; n = 24 Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy) and their parents provided biopsychosocial data through a comprehensive self-report questionnaire. The primary outcome measure was the Warwick Edinburgh Mental Wellbeing Scale (WEMWBS). Relationships between mental wellbeing and variables within and across each ICF domain were explored using linear regression models. Mean WEMWBS scores (55.3/70 [SD 8.1]) were higher than for typically developing youth and comparable to youth with other chronic conditions. Over half of youth reported severe co-morbidities across all body systems. Multivariable modelling indicated that mental wellbeing was independently associated with academic achievement and perceived family support but not with physical health variables. Beyond management of physical co-morbidities, enabling youths’ educational attainment and attending to social support likely optimises youth’s wellbeing

    Online communications are ever increasing, and we are constantly faced with the challenge of whether online information is credible or not. Being able to assess the credibility of others was once the work solely of intelligence agencies. In the current times of disinformation and misinformation, understanding what we are reading and to who we are paying attention to is essential for us to make considered, informed, and accurate decisions, and it has become everyone’s business. This paper employs a literature review to examine the empirical evidence across online credibility, trust, deception, and fraud detection in an effort to consolidate this information to understand adversary online credibility – how do we know with whom we are conversing is who they say they are? Based on this review, we propose a model that includes examining information as well as user and interaction characteristics to best inform an assessment of online credibility.     Beyond the Checklist Approach: A Librarian-Faculty Collaboration to Teach the BEAM Method of Source Evaluation

    Evaluating information is an essential skill, valued across disciplines. While librarians and instructors share the responsibility to teach this skill, they need a common framework in order to collaborate to design assignments that give students multiple opportunities to learn. Librarians and First Year Seminar faculty at Belmont University collaborated to design a unit of instruction on source evaluation using the BEAM method. BEAM requires students to apply a use-based approach to evaluation, to read and engage with sources more closely, and to think about how they might use a source for a specific purpose. Structured annotated bibliographies that included BEAM were assessed, along with student, instructor, and librarian feedback. The BEAM method may be an effective method for teaching information evaluation when paired with other sequenced assignments that guide students through the research and writing process

    Patient Experiences of Recovery After Autologous Chondrocyte Implantation: A Qualitative Study

    Context: The recovery process after autologous chondrocyte implantation (ACI) can be challenging for patients and clinicians alike due to significant functional limitations and a lengthy healing time. Understanding patients\u27 experiences during the recovery process may assist clinicians in providing more individualized care. Objective: To explore and describe patients\u27 experiences during the recovery process after ACI. Design: Qualitative study. Setting: Orthopaedic clinic. Patients or Other Participants: Participants from a single orthopaedic practice who had undergone ACI within the previous 12 months were purposefully selected. Data Collection and Analysis: Volunteers participated in 1-on-1 semistructured interviews to describe their recovery experiences after ACI. Data were analyzed using the process of horizontalization. Results: Seven patients (2 men, 5 women; age = 40.7 ± 7.5 years, time from surgery = 8.7 ± 4.2 months) participated. Four themes and 6 subthemes emerged from the data and suggested that the recovery process is a lengthy and emotional experience. Therapy provides optimism for the future but requires a collaborative effort among the patient, surgeon, rehabilitation provider, and patient\u27s caregiver(s). Furthermore, patients expressed frustration that their expectations for recovery did not match the reality of the process, including greater dependence on caregivers than expected. Conclusions: Patients\u27 expectations should be elicited before surgery and managed throughout the recovery process. Providing preoperative patient and caregiver education and encouraging preoperative rehabilitation can assist in managing expectations. Establishing realistic goals and expectations may improve rehabilitation adherence, encourage optimism for recovery, and improve outcomes in the long term

    Nautilus ROV Robot Manipulator

    Global warming and climate change are prevalent issues in today’s society. As a result, research in the ocean, our world’s biggest ecosystem, is imperative in efforts to protect the environment. Santa Clara University’s Robotic Systems Lab contributes to this field through work and developments on remotely operated vehicles (ROVs). An existing ROV system called Nautilus consists of a robot arm, end effector, and storage system in order to collect various types of sediments at a depth of 300 feet. However, the previous system does not meet that requirement. In direct collaboration with researchers within the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute, we were able to create and accomplish a set of deliverables to improve our ROV. Our team’s main goal was to make the system functional and more efficient by redesigning the manipulator arm and soft gripper in order to retrieve samples, as well as creating a sample storage container that is in view of the camera or workspace to document and record the location of those samples. Our project gives researchers a cheaper alternative compared to existing sample collection methods, which are relatively more expensive, so that they can continue to explore and document stretches of the ocean far more easily. The project was done with the guidance of faculty in the Robotic Systems Lab as well as researchers from the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI)

    Evidence of a Large Novel Gene Pool Associated with Prokaryotic Genomic Islands

    Microbial genes that are “novel” (no detectable homologs in other species) have become of increasing interest as environmental sampling suggests that there are many more such novel genes in yet-to-be-cultured microorganisms. By analyzing known microbial genomic islands and prophages, we developed criteria for systematic identification of putative genomic islands (clusters of genes of probable horizontal origin in a prokaryotic genome) in 63 prokaryotic genomes, and then characterized the distribution of novel genes and other features. All but a few of the genomes examined contained significantly higher proportions of novel genes in their predicted genomic islands compared with the rest of their genome (Paired t test = 4.43E-14 to 1.27E-18, depending on method). Moreover, the reverse observation (i.e., higher proportions of novel genes outside of islands) never reached statistical significance in any organism examined. We show that this higher proportion of novel genes in predicted genomic islands is not due to less accurate gene prediction in genomic island regions, but likely reflects a genuine increase in novel genes in these regions for both bacteria and archaea. This represents the first comprehensive analysis of novel genes in prokaryotic genomic islands and provides clues regarding the origin of novel genes. Our collective results imply that there are different gene pools associated with recently horizontally transmitted genomic regions versus regions that are primarily vertically inherited. Moreover, there are more novel genes within the gene pool associated with genomic islands. Since genomic islands are frequently associated with a particular microbial adaptation, such as antibiotic resistance, pathogen virulence, or metal resistance, this suggests that microbes may have access to a larger “arsenal” of novel genes for adaptation than previously thought

    Overview of the CLPsych 2022 Shared Task: Capturing Moments of Change in Longitudinal User Posts

    We provide an overview of the CLPsych 2022 Shared Task, which focusses on the automatic identification of Moments of Change in longitudinal posts by individuals on social media and its connection with information regarding mental health . This year\u27s task introduced the notion of longitudinal modelling of the text generated by an individual online over time, along with appropriate temporally sensitive evaluation metrics. The Shared Task consisted of two subtasks: (a) the main task of capturing changes in an individual\u27s mood (drastic changes-`Switches\u27- and gradual changes -`Escalations\u27- on the basis of textual content shared online; and subsequently (b) the sub-task of identifying the suicide risk level of an individual -- a continuation of the CLPsych 2019 Shared Task-- where participants were encouraged to explore how the identification of changes in mood in task (a) can help with assessing suicidality risk in task (b)

    In order to evaluate the effectiveness of the Georgia College & State University (GC&SU) Nursing Program, a non-experimental, survey research study was conducted by senior nursing students in the Nursing Research class. The survey evaluated the teaching and learning strategies used in the program, the students\u27 perceptions of preparedness for nursing after graduation, and the students\u27 perceptions of the strengths and weaknesses of the GC&SU nursing curriculum. Each participant signed an informed consent form. Forty-five out of a possible 142 nursing students responded to the survey. A statistical analysis of the responses was conducted and comparisons of answers were analyzed across the different nursing cohorts. Implications and recommendations for changes for the GC&SU Nursing Program were stated. As demand for registered nurses continues to increase, nursing programs in the United States are rising to meet this need by educating clinically proficient nurses. GC&SU nursing program graduates approximately 80 nursing students per year. In May 2003, 94% of the nursing graduates passed the licensure exam, helping fill the need in healthcare settings. Nursing faculty realize that they must prepare nurses who are adept at performing essential nursing skills including assessment, safe medication administration, nursing care for ill clients and health teaching
