    Short-lived Radio Bursts from the Crab Pulsar

    Our high-time-resolution observations reveal that individual main pulses from the Crab pulsar contain one or more short-lived microbursts. Both the energy and duration of bursts measured above 1 GHz can vary dramatically in less than a millisecond. These fluctuations are too rapid to be caused by propagation through turbulence in the Crab Nebula or the interstellar medium; they must be intrinsic to the radio emission process in the pulsar. The mean duration of a burst varies with frequency as ν−2\nu^{-2}, significantly different from the broadening caused by interstellar scattering.     Molecular cloning and characterization of a new member of the gap junction gene family, connexin-31

    A new member of the connexin gene family has been identified and designated rat connexin-31 (Cx31) based on its predicted molecular mass of 30,960 daltons. Cx31 is 270 amino acids long and is coded for by a single copy gene. It is expressed as a 1.7-kilobase mRNA that is detected in placenta, Harderian gland, skin, and eye. Cx31 is highly conserved and can be detected in species as distantly related to rat as Xenopus laevis. It exhibits extensive sequence similarity to the previously identified connexins, 58, 50, and 40% amino acid identity to Cx26, Cx32, and Cx43, respectively. When conservation of predicted phosphorylation sites is used to adjust the alignment of Cx31 to other connexins, a unique alignment of three predicted protein kinase C phosphorylation sites near the carboxyl terminus of Cx31 with three sites at the carboxyl terminus of Cx43 is revealed

    Consumer preferences for teledermoscopy screening to detect melanoma early

    Introduction: ‘Store and forward’ teledermoscopy is a technology with potential advantages for melanoma screening. Any large-scale implementation of this technology is dependent on consumer acceptance. Aim: To investigate preferences for melanoma screening options compared with skin self-examination in adults considered to be at increased risk of developing skin cancer. Methods: A discrete choice experiment was completed by 35 consumers, all of whom had prior experience with the use of teledermoscopy, in Queensland, Australia. Participants made 12 choices between screening alternatives described by seven attributes including monetary cost. A mixed logit model was used to estimate the relative weights that consumers place on different aspects of screening, along with the marginal willingness to pay for teledermoscopy as opposed to screening at a clinic. Results: Overall, participants preferred screening/diagnosis by a health professional rather than skin self-examination. Key drivers of screening choice were for results to be reviewed by a dermatologist; a higher detection rate; fewer non-cancerous moles being removed in relation to every skin cancer detected; and less time spent away from usual activities. On average, participants were willing to pay AUD110 to have teledermoscopy with dermatologist review available to them as a screening option. Discussion and conclusions: Consumers preferentially value aspects of care that are more feasible with a teledermoscopy screening model, as compared with other skin cancer screening and diagnosis options. This study adds to previous literature in the area which has relied on the use of consumer satisfaction scales to assess the acceptability of teledermoscopy

    Stability of the pentaquark in a naive string model

    The pentaquark is studied in a simple model of confinement where the quarks and the antiquark are linked by flux tubes of minimal cumulated length, and the Coulomb-like interaction, the spin-dependent terms and the antisymmetrization constraints are neglected.. The ground-state is found to be stable against spontaneous dissociation into a meson and a baryon, both in the case of five equal-mass constituents and for a static quark or antiquark surrounded by four equal masses.Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures, minor corrections, references added, to appear in Phys.     Mean Free Path in Disordered Multichannel Tight-Binding Wires

    Transport in a disordered tight-binding wire involves a collection of different mean free paths resulting from the distinct fermi points, which correspond to the various scattering channels of the wire. The generalization of Thouless' relation between the mean free path and the localization length ξ\xi permits to define an average channel mean free path,ℓˉ\bar\ell, such that ξ∼Nℓˉ\xi\sim N\bar\ell in an NN-channel system. The averaged mean free path ℓˉ\bar\ell is expressed exactly in terms of the total reflection coefficient of the wire and compared with the mean free path defined in the maximum entropy approach

    A test of the CPL parameterization for rapid dark energy equation of state transitions

    We test the robustness and flexibility of the Chevallier-Polarski-Linder (CPL) parameterization of the Dark Energy equation of state w(z)=w0+waz1+zw(z)=w_0+w_a \frac{z}{1+z} in recovering a four-parameter step-like fiducial model. We constrain the parameter space region of the underlying fiducial model where the CPL parameterization offers a reliable reconstruction. It turns out that non negligible biases leak into the results for recent (z<2.5z<2.5) rapid transitions, but that CPL yields a good reconstruction in all other cases. The presented analysis is performed with supernova Ia data as forecasted for a space mission like SNAP/JDEM, combined with future expectations for the CMB shift parameter RR and the BAO parameter AA.Comment: 8 pages, 6 ps figure

    Creep motion of a model frictional system

    We report on the dynamics of a model frictional system submitted to minute external perturbations. The system consists of a chain of sliders connected through elastic springs that rest on an incline. By introducing cyclic expansions and contractions of the springs we observe a reptation of the chain. We account for the average reptation velocity theoretically. The velocity of small systems exhibits a series of plateaus as a function of the incline angle. Due to elastic e ects, there exists a critical amplitude below which the reptation is expected to cease. However, rather than a full stop of the creep, we observe in numerical simulations a transition between a continuous-creep and an irregular-creep regime when the critical amplitude is approached. The latter transition is reminiscent of the transition between the continuous and the irregular compaction of granular matter submitted to periodic temperature changes
