The Transition. Convergence and discrepancy in the international and national press coverage of Spain’s major postwar international news export

The role of the national and foreign press in the news coverage of the Spanish transition to democracy (1975-1978) has been a constant reference in the historical study of the period of political change after the end of the Francoist dictatorship. In this article we present the general results of three research projects concerning the role of the foreign press, of the Spanish daily press and the magazine marketin which we can observe both convergence and discrepance in the news narrative, editorial behaviour and political standpoints. The greater independence and informative freedom of the foreign press contrasts with the proximity of the Spanish press to both King and government with the exception of the critical support to reform expressed in both the new political magazines and newspapers during the first few months of the process of political change.El papel de la prensa nacional y extranjera en la cobertura informativa de la Transición española a la democracia (1975-1978) ha sido una referencia constante en la historiografía del período de cambio político en España tras el final de la dictadura de Franco, así como en la cultura periodística. En este artículo presentamos los resultados generales de tres proyectos de investigación sobre el papel de la prensa extranjera, de la prensa diaria española y de la prensa no diaria enlos que se pueden comprobar convergencias y discrepancias en el relato informativo, las valoraciones editoriales y los posicionamientos políticos. La mayor independencia y libertad informativa de la prensa extranjera contrasta con la proximidad de la prensa española al rey y al gobierno, con la excepción del apoyo crítico a la reforma de las nuevas revistas políticas y los diarios surgidos en los primeros meses del proceso de cambio político

El regreso de la monarquía y la transición a la democracia en España (1975-78). Los apoyos de la prensa británica

El  regreso  de  la  Monarquía  y  la  Transición  española  a  la  democracia  tras  la   muerte  de  Franco  fueron  objeto  de  una  atención  especial  en  la  prensa  extranjera.  En este  artículo,  se  estudia  el  papel  desempeñado  por  la  prensa  británica,  en  el  contexto   de  las  relaciones  especiales  entre  las  casas  reales  de  la  más  antigua  y  la  más  joven  de   las  monarquías  europeas  y  la  actitud  de  reserva  mantenida  por  los  gobiernos  laboristas   de  Harold  Wilson  y  James  Callaghan.  Los  cuatro  principales  diarios  británicos  –The   Daily  Telegraph,  The  Times,  The  Guardian  y  Financial  Times-­‐  mostraron  su  apoyo  al   proceso  de  cambio  español  poniendo  énfasis,  respectivamente,  en  el  papel  del  rey  Juan   Carlos,  el  espíritu  europeísta,  el  pragmatismo  político  y  el  análisis  de  los  objetivos  y   riesgos.  Excepto  el  primero,  se  cuestionó  inicialmente  la  capacidad  del  Rey  y  la   disposición  al  cambio  del  presidente  Arias.  Todos  coincidieron  en  el  apoyo  a  la  reforma   del  presidente  Suárez  y  la  necesidad  de  legalizar  al  partido  comunista  y  mostraron   serias  reservas  ante  algunas  insuficiencias  de  la  Constitución.  The  return  of  the  monarchy  and  the  Spanish  transition  to  democracy  after   Franco's  death  were  given  special  attention  in  the  foreign  press.  In  this  article,  the  role   played  by  the  British  press  is  studied  in  the  context  of  the  special  relations  between  the   royal  houses  of  the  oldest  and  youngest  of  the  European  monarchy  and  the  attitude  of   reserve  maintained  by  the  Labour  governments  of  Harold  Wilson  and  James  Callaghan.   The  four  major  British  newspapers  -­‐The  Daily  Telegraph,  The  Times,  The  Guardian  and     Financial  Times  showed  their  support  to  the  Spanish  changing  emphasis,  respectively,   in  the  role  of  King  Juan  Carlos,  the  European  spirit,  political  pragmatism  and  analysis  of   objectives  and  risks.  Except  the  first,  initially  it  questioned  the  ability  of  the  King  and   the  willingness  to  change  of  President  Arias.  All  agreed  on  supporting  the  reform  of   President  Suarez  and  the  need  to  legalize  the  Communist  Party  and  showed  strong   reservations  about  certain  shortcomings  of  the  Constitutio

Els efectes de les tecnologies digitals i Internet en el sistema de mitjans de comunicació. social plantegen un canvi de perspectiva en la consideració de la història del periodisme, que es trobaria al final d'un cicle evolutiu. Al cap de quatre segles, la premsa i el periodisme han estat substituïts en el seu paper de motors de la indústria de la comunicació, davant l'hegemonia creixent de l'audiovisual, els llocs web i les xarxes socials, de manera que els investigadors han d'afrontar una nova dimensió del temps històric que afecta el passat més immediat. Aquest article proposa alguns aspectes a tenir en compte des de la perspectiva de la crisi del periodisme, de la naturalesa dels mitjans i del cicle particular del periodisme català.The effects of digital technologies and the Internet on the social communication media pose a new way of looking at the history of journalism, which is now at the end of an evolutionary era. After a period of four centuries, the press and journalism have been replaced in their role as drivers of the communications industry by the increasingly dominant audiovisual media, websites and social networks. Consequently, researchers are faced with a new dimension of historical time that affects our most recent past. This study brings up some aspects to be considered in connection with the journalism crisis, the nature of the media and the specific period in which Catalan journalism is now found
