Special attention is paid to the migration to Poland as the host country of the highest, among EU countries, of labour migrants from Ukraine. It also evaluated individual aspects of migration of Ukrainian youth in the EU countries with the aim of obtaining higher education. The obtained results can be used as an information base for the development of a system of measures of state poliks in the field of labour migration

Smoothing sparse and unevenly sampled curves using semiparametric mixed models: An application to online auctions

Functional data analysis can be challenging when the functional objects are sampled only very sparsely and unevenly. Most approaches rely on smoothing to recover the underlying functional object from the data which can be difficult if the data is irregularly distributed. In this paper we present a new approach that can overcome this challenge. The approach is based on the ideas of mixed models. Specifically, we propose a semiparametric mixed model with boosting to recover the functional object. While the model can handle sparse and unevenly distributed data, it also results in conceptually more meaningful functional objects. In particular, we motivate our method within the framework of eBay's online auctions. Online auctions produce monotonic increasing price curves that are often correlated across two auctions. The semiparametric mixed model accounts for this correlation in a parsimonious way. It also estimates the underlying increasing trend from the data without imposing model-constraints. Our application shows that the resulting functional objects are conceptually more appealing. Moreover, when used to forecast the outcome of an online auction, our approach also results in more accurate price predictions compared to standard approaches. We illustrate our model on a set of 183 closed auctions for Palm M515 personal digital assistants

Indigenising the Corporation. Indigenous Organisation Design: An Analysis of their Design, Features and the Influence of Indigenous Cultural Values

Indigenous organisations are key sites of collective identity, voice, and empowerment yet we know virtually nothing about their nature or what makes them different. This thesis seeks to address this gap by answering the overarching question: ‘What are the features of current indigenous organisation design and how are organisational elements and definitions of success influenced by culture?’ The distinct contribution of this thesis is its unique blend, using indigenous theory and organisation theory, to generate new and original indigenous organisation theory. This thesis uses a multiple case study design focused on three contemporary indigenous organisations, Kamehameha Schools of Hawai’i, the Sealaska Regional Corporation of Alaska and Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu of New Zealand to investigate the phenomenon of contemporary indigenous organisations. A total of 90 interviews were analysed for this inductive qualitative study that uses grounded theory methods. Conflict is an inherent dynamic in indigenous organisations. This thesis suggests the adoption of Western structural models has benefitted indigenous economic development, but these structures are a source of tension as they are not aligned with indigenous purposes and contribute to fears of cultural assimilation. Structure is both a source of tension and the scapegoat for broader tensions stemming from the conflicting purposes, mindsets, and cultural contexts to which the organisation must relate. Indigenous organisations are complex and conflicted as they seek to balance opposing demands, striving to keep pace with a fast- changing environment, whilst simultaneously trying to be more consistent with their own cultural values. Despite these challenges, change is occurring. This thesis suggests indigenous organisations are evolving to better align with indigenous cultural values and aspirations. Tensions also signal progress as taken for granted assumptions are identified, challenged, and replaced. This thesis shows that organisations and their design are not culturally neutral. Furthermore, indigenous organisations are progressing towards the possibility of indigenous models of organisation that offers a way out of the constraints of their present realities

In the dissertation the actual scientific problem is given, which consists in development of theoretical bases of production technology of nuclides 123I/124I with the use of new approach to cooling of solid-state target. Due to low thermal conductivity of TheO2 (30 mW/cm K), used as a target material, it is difficult to transfer heat from the target material to the cooled substrate, which leads to a decrease in operating current and productivity of nuclides. To solve this problem, it is necessary to apply additional cooling of the target

A new approach to gas leakage detection in high pressure distribution networks is proposed, where the pipeline is modelled as a Linear Parameter Varying (LPV) System driven by the source node mass flow with the pressure as the scheduling parameter, and the system output as the mass flow at the offtake. Using a recently proposed successive approximations LPV system subspace identification algorithm, the pipeline is thus identified from operational data. The leak is detected using a Kalman filter where the fault is treated as an augmented state. The effectiveness of this method is illustrated with an example with a mixture of real and simulated data

CGEF-1 regulates mTORC1 signaling during adult longevity and stress response in

The mechanistic target of rapamycin (mTOR) kinase is central to metabolism and growth, and has a conserved role in aging. mTOR functions in two complexes, mTORC1 and mTORC2. In diverse eukaryotes, inhibition of mTORC1 signaling increases lifespan. mTORC1 transduces anabolic signals to stimulate protein synthesis and inhibits autophagy. In this study, we demonstrate that CGEF-1, theC. eleganshomolog of the human guanine nucleotide exchange factor Dbl, is a novel binding partner of RHEB-1 and activator of mTORC1 signaling inC. elegans.cgef-1mutants display prolonged lifespan and enhanced stress resistance. The transcription factors DAF-16/FoxO and SKN-1/Nrf are required for increased longevity and stress tolerance, and induce protective gene expression incgef-1mutants. Genetic evidence indicates thatcgef-1functions in the same pathway withrheb-1, the mTOR kinaselet-363, anddaf-15/Raptor. Whencgef-1is inactivated, phosphorylation of 4E-BP, a central mTORC1 substrate for protein translation is reduced inC. elegans. Moreover, autophagy is increased uponcgef-1and mTORC1 inhibition. In addition, we show that in human cells Dbl associates with Rheb and stimulates mTORC1 downstream targets for protein synthesis suggesting that the function of CGEF-1/Dbl in the mTORC1 signaling pathway is evolutionarily conserved. These findings have important implications for mTOR functions and signaling mechanisms in aging and age-related diseases

Program FFlexCom — High frequency flexible bendable electronics for wireless communication systems

    Get PDF
Today, electronics are implemented on rigid substrates. However, many objects in daily-life are not rigid — they are bendable, stretchable and even foldable. Examples are paper, tapes, our body, our skin and textiles. Until today there is a big gap between electronics and bendable daily-life items. Concerning this matter, the DFG Priority Program FFlexCom aims at paving the way for a novel research area: Wireless communication systems fully integrated on an ultra-thin, bendable and flexible piece of plastic or paper. The Program encompasses 13 projects led by 25 professors. By flexibility we refer to mechanical flexibility, which can come in flavors of bendability, foldability and, stretchability. In the last years the speed of flexible devices has massively been improved. However, to enable functional flexible systems and operation frequencies up to the sub-GHz range, the speed of flexible devices must still be increased by several orders of magnitude requiring novel system and circuit architectures, component concepts, technologies and materials
