Rezultati. Background/Aim. Rumex crispus (curly dock) is a wild perennial herbaceous plant, which products are considered as a rich source of biologically active molecules with antioxidant and cytotoxic activities. The aim of this study was to estimate of antioxidant and cytotoxic activities of aqueous extract of curly dock fruits. Methods. The aqueous extract of curly dock fruits was evaluated for its antioxidant activity by in vitro assays for ferric-reducing antioxidant power (FRAP), NO•, OH• and 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH)-free radical scavenging activities and the influence on lipid peroxidation in liposomes. The cytotoxicity of tested extract was examined in vitro in human cervix carcinoma (HeLa), colon adenocarcinoma (HT-29) and breast adenocarcinoma (MCF7) cells. Results. The tested extract showed a potential antioxidant activity manifested in scavenging of free radicals as well as an ability to decrease lipid peroxidation in liposomes. The results indicated tissue-selective cytotoxicity of R. crispus fruit extract in vitro. The most prominent antitumor activity was observed towards HeLa and MCF7 cell lines. Conclusion. The investigated aqueous fruit extract of R. crispus had potential antioxidant and cytotoxic activities, with necrosis as a main mechanism of induced cell-death. Different methods of extraction of R. crispus fruits, apart from aqueous, are recommended for further investigations

Pre-B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia with bulk extramedullary disease and chromosome 22 (EWSR1) rearrangement masquerading as Ewing sarcoma

We report a 2-year-old female with a subcutaneous tumor who was initially misdiagnosed as suffering from Ewing sarcoma with a positive EWSR1 rearrangement and EWS/FLI1 transcript. After finding lymphoblasts in peripheral blood, the diagnosis of acute lymphoblastic leukemia was established. This necessitated further analysis of the subcutaneous tumor. The tissue was positive for immature B-cell markers and an immunoglobulin heavy chain gene rearrangement, which confirmed the final diagnosis of common type acute lymphoblastic leukemia with bulk extramedullary disease. The patient was treated with chemotherapy and was in remission 30 months after the diagnosis

Background: To prove the frequency of thrombocytosis in patients with cancer, and the importance of anticoagulant therapy. Thrombocytosis represents an elevated platelet count of more than 350,000/mm3 which is one of the risk factors for venous thromboembolism. Methods: This study has analyzed 146 patients who were hospitalized at the Oncology Clinic of the University Clinical Centre, Banja Luka and the Day Oncology Hospital “S.tetik”, Banja Luka in the period between 2009 and 2014. These were patients with breast tumor, gastrointestinal or gynecological malignancies. Thrombocytosis was detected in 38 patients in the moment of diagnosing. All examinees were analyzed by sex, age, primary site of tumor, presence of comorbidity, relevant laboratory analyses, clinical stage of the disease (metastatic or localized disease). Results: In the observed sample of 146 patients, thrombocytosis was detected in 38 patients in the moment of diagnosing the disease (26%). Through the follow-up, DVT (deep venous thrombosis) was found in 13 patients (34.2%) and anticoagulant therapy was administered. Out of patients who were not on anticoagulant therapy because they had no thrombotic manifestations (25 patients, 65.8%), 2 ended up experiencing the development of a clinical presentation of massive pulmonary embolism with fatal outcome. Conclusions: The occurrence of thromboembolism significantly increases morbidity and mortality, as well as the total cost of treating cancer patients. Regardless of the fact that cancer patients are at a high risk of thromboembolic events, thromboembolic prophylaxis has not been adopted as a standard therapeutic modality because of potential bleeding

Identifying credit supply shocks with bank-firm data: methods and applications. National Bank of Belgium, Working Paper No. 347

    Get PDF
Current empirical methods to identify and assess the impact of bank credit supply shocks rely strictly on multi-bank firms and ignore firms borrowing from only one bank. Yet, these single-bank firms are often the majority of firms in an economy and most prone to credit supply shocks. We propose and underpin an alternative demand control (using industry-location-size-time fixed effects) that allows identifying timevarying cross-sectional bank credit supply shocks using both single- and multi-bank firms. Using matched bank-firm credit data from Belgium, we show that firms borrowing from banks with negative credit supply shocks exhibit lower financial debt growth, asset growth, investments, and operating margin growth. Positive credit supply shocks are associated with bank risk-taking behaviour at the extensive margin. Importantly, to capture these effects it is crucial to include the single-bank firms when identifying the bank credit supply shocks

Introduction to the Symposium on Contemporary Banking Research:The Use of Fixed Effects to Disentangle Loan Demand from Loan Supply

    Get PDF
With the onset of the financial crisis, disentangling the effects of loan demand and supply in contemporary banking research has become vital for a proper assessment of supply-related banking shocks. These shocks may negatively affect the real economy through many channels, such as the lending channel of monetary policy transmission, the bank risk-taking channel or the evaluation of macroprudential policy efficiency. All these rely on separating the two lending components. Empirical identification has largely relied on the use of demand-related fixed effects, which has also been applied in several analyses within this Symposium

The fair value within the business improvement in the enterprises of the Republic of Serbia is continuing demanding work that is carried out in the framework of financial reporting management companies, sectors of economy, but the national authorities may require a completely evaluation of companies, based on the decisions of state bodies and individual requirements. An important place in this context have the internal audit, external audit, as these can be a driver of the fair value of the initial phase by the management council. External audit is able to thinking management delivered only after the end of the business year, when it receives the financial statements of the previous year of business, and then can make recommendations, because through their impact on future business management, provided that it is adopted, it will be is maintained in the next period of operation. Therefore regardless of the drivers and the initiator of the fair value now exist ways to increase the security of the overall business, and in this paper highlighted the fair value as an element of financial reporting. It is expected to increase the number of effective fair value in the Republic of Serbia, because companies can realize numerous benefits

Epiphytic and epilithic diatom communities along the Raška River – implications for the water quality

We compared epiphytic and epilithic diatom communities in the Raška River, and their use in river biomonitoring. The material was collected in April, June, August and November 2011, and March 2012 from 5 localities along the Raška River. The result showed high variation of the diatom species composition between this two micro-habitats. The most abundant genera were Navicula, Gomphonema and Nitzschia, but with higher diversity in epiphytic diatom community. During first season, Achnanthidium minutissimum and Gomphonema tergestinum were dominant taxa in epilithic, while A. minutissimum and Diatoma vulgaris in epiphytic diatom community. Epilithic diatoms are the favoured community for monitoring water quality. However, at any river, diatom species are located on various substrates at the same sampling site. For diatom diversity assessment it is necessary to investigate all micro-habitats. Our results point to a difference in values of TDI diatom index between macrophytes and stone samples. Is it necessary to investigate all micro-habitats, or is the type of substratum independent for water quality monitoring?6th Balkan Botanical Congress, Rijeka, September 14-18, 201

2017). Rezultati naših istraživanja šire njen areal, kao i opseg dimenzija valve, pružajući nove detalje o autekološkim karakteristikama taksona. Ovi rezultati ukazuju na neophodnost detaljnijih i intenzivnijih istraživanja u cilju proširenja znanja o silikatnim algama Srbije.Kladovo, Srbija, 25–30.09.2018. [www.serbiosoc.org.rs
