    Differences in Dolphin Mortality Rates in Night and Day Sets for the U.S. Eastern Tropical Pacific Tuna Purse Seine Fishery

    Because dolphins sometimes travel with yellowfin tuna, Thunnus albacares, in the eastern tropical Pacific (ETP), purse seiners use the dolphins to locate and capture tuna schools. During the process of setting the purse seine nets, dolphins often become entangled and drown before they can be released. Data for the U.S. purse seine fleet in the ETP during 1979-88 show that dolphin mortality rates in sets made during the night are higher than mortality rates in sets made during the day. Even with efforts to reduce nightset mortality rates through the use of high intensity floodlights, night set mortality rates remain higher. The data are also used to simulate a regulation on the fishery aimed at eliminating night sets and show that dolphin mortality rates would decrease

    The Meaning of \u3cem\u3eHijab\u3c/em\u3e: Voices of Muslim Women in Egypt and Yemen

    This work explores how Muslim women in Egypt and Yemen understand the hijab, or head scarf. Based on data (N = 100) from a self-administered questionnaire written in Arabic, differences about the meaning of hijab are examined from the perspective of women who wear or are expected to wear the head scarf. When asked what the hijab means, Egyptian women focus on religious reasons and Yemeni women emphasize a cultural (or modesty) understanding. When probed further about their understanding of hijab, Egyptian women split between religious and gendered explanations. Significant numbers of women in our Egyptian sample report the hijab to be a symbol of oppression. On the other hand, Yemeni women rarely offer a gendered understanding of the hijab; instead, they focus on religious, domestic, and psychological reasons for wearing the head scarf

    Effects of virus infection on release of volatile organic compounds from insect-damaged bean, Phaseolus vulgaris

    Insects can serve as important vectors of plant pathogens, especially viruses. Insect feeding on plants causes the systemic release of a wide range of plant volatile compounds that can serve as an indirect plant defense by attracting natural enemies of the herbivorous insect. Previous work suggests that the Mexican bean beetle (Epilachna varivestis) prefers to feed on plants infected by either of two viruses that it is known to transmit: Southern bean mosaic virus (SBMV) or Bean pod mottle virus (BPMV). A possible explanation for the preferred feeding on virus-infected tissues is that the beetles are attracted by volatile signals released from leaves. The purpose of this work was to determine whether volatile compounds from virus-infected plants are released differentially from those emitted by uninfected plants. To test the hypothesis, common bean plants (Phaseolus vulgaris cv. Black Valentine) were inoculated with either BPMV, SBMV, or a mixture of both viruses, and infected plants were compared to uninfected plants. An Ouchterlony assay was used with SBMVand BPMV-specific antisera to confirm the presence of virus in inoculated plants. RNA blot analysis was performed on tissue from each plant and indicated that a well-characterized defense gene, encoding phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL), was not induced in systemic tissue following virus infection. Plant volatiles were collected—and analyzed via gas chromatography (GC)—from plants that were either undamaged or beetle-damaged. In undamaged plants, there were no measurable differences in profiles or quantities of compounds released by uninfected and virus-infected plants. After Mexican bean beetles were allowed to feed on plants for 48 h, injured plants released several compounds that were not released from undamaged plants. Lower quantities of volatile compounds were released from virus-infected plants suggesting that enhanced release of plant-derived volatile organic compounds is not the cause for attraction of Mexican bean beetles to virus-infected plants

    Athletic Trainers’ Hand Hygiene Behaviors During the COVID-19 Pandemic

    Purpose: Hand hygiene (HH) is a cost-effective public health intervention to prevent infectious disease transmission, including COVID-19. Health care professionals have shown poor adherence to HH best practices, and little is known about athletic trainer (AT) HH. ATs typically work in dynamic, unpredictable environments, creating barriers to HH compliance. The purpose of this study was to understand the self-reported behaviors and challenges with adherence to HH of secondary school ATs, particularly related to mitigating infection transmission during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: In this qualitative study, we conducted 11 semi-structured interviews with secondary school ATs actively engaged in direct patient care (age=31±9 years; experience=9±8 years). A 2-person data analysis team used a multi-phase inductive coding process to identify emerging domains and themes to create a codebook. Trustworthiness and credibility were established with member checking, multi-researcher analysis, and internal auditing. Results: We identified four themes: 1) best practices awareness, 2) impact of COVID-19, 3) resources, and 4) community-based prevention. Participants indicated HH training was included during on-boarding, but lacked contextual knowledge for HH in clinical practice, despite identifying ATs as health care providers. Participants expressed increased HH frequency due to the COVID-19 pandemic and concern for transmission. Participants noted an overall positive perception of access to physical resources, like hand sanitizer, sinks, and soap, as well as financial support to provide those resources. Participants noted decreased perceived risk and lack of formal policy or enforcement of HH expectations for facility users. Conclusion: ATs have general knowledge and resources but lack contextual knowledge and behaviors to employ HH best practices. The COVID-19 pandemic increased awareness, but HH by athletic training facility users remains poor. ATs should engage in HH based on best practice recommendations consistent with a traditional healthcare facility. Policies should be developed and enforced to limit disease transmission

    Monte Carlo Simulation of the Rapid Crystallization of Bismuth-Doped Silicon

    In this Letter we report Ising model simulations of the growth of alloys which predict quite different behavior near and far from equilibrium. Our simulations reproduce the phenomenon which has been termed 'solute trapping,' where concentrations of solute, which are far in excess of the equilibrium concentrations, are observed in the crystal after rapid crystallization. This phenomenon plays an important role in many processes which involve first order phase changes which take place under conditions far from equilibrium. The underlying physical basis for it has not been understood, but these Monte Carlo simulations provide a powerful means for investigating it

    Initial Investigation of Reaction Control System Design on Spacecraft Handling Qualities for Earth Orbit Docking

    A program of research, development, test, and evaluation is planned for the development of Spacecraft Handling Qualities guidelines. In this first experiment, the effects of Reaction Control System design characteristics and rotational control laws were evaluated during simulated proximity operations and docking. Also, the influence of piloting demands resulting from varying closure rates was assessed. The pilot-in-the-loop simulation results showed that significantly different spacecraft handling qualities result from the design of the Reaction Control System. In particular, cross-coupling between translational and rotational motions significantly affected handling qualities as reflected by Cooper-Harper pilot ratings and pilot workload, as reflected by Task-Load Index ratings. This influence is masked but only slightly by the rotational control system mode. While rotational control augmentation using Rate Command Attitude Hold can reduce the workload (principally, physical workload) created by cross-coupling, the handling qualities are not significantly improved. The attitude and rate deadbands of the RCAH introduced significant mental workload and control compensation to evaluate when deadband firings would occur, assess their impact on docking performance, and apply control inputs to mitigate that impact

    Transient advanced mental impairment: An underappreciated morbidity after aortic surgery

    AbstractObjectives: To determine the incidence, risk factors, and associated morbidity of transient advanced mental impairment (TAMI) after aortic surgery. Methods: We retrospectively studied the charts of 188 consecutive patients undergoing elective aortic reconstruction during a recent 6-year period at a university hospital. All patients were lucid on admission and nonintubated at the time of evaluation at least 2 days after operation. TAMI was defined as disorientation or confusion on 2 or more postoperative days. Preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative clinical variables were examined statistically for associations with TAMI. Results: Fifty-three patients (28%) had development of TAMI 3.9 ± 2.8 days after operation. Stepwise logistic regression analysis selected the following independent predictors for TAMI: age >65 years (odds ratio [OR], 7.9; 95% confidence interval [CI], 2.7 to 23.7), American Society of Anesthesiology physical status classification >3 (OR, 2.8; 95% CI, 1.3 to 5.9), diabetes mellitus (OR, 3.4; 95% CI, 1.2 to 9.8), old myocardial infarction (OR, 2.4; 95% CI, 1.1 to 5.3), and hypertension (OR, 2.3; 95% CI, 1.0 to 5.3). Alcohol consumption was not significantly associated with TAMI. In the postoperative period, patients with TAMI were more likely to have hypoxia (P <.001), a need for reintubation (P <.001), pneumonia (P <.001), congestive heart failure (P =.003), and kidney failure (P =.05). In addition, patients with TAMI had a longer duration of endotracheal intubation (3.7 ± 7.8 vs 0.6 ± 1.2 days, P <.001), stay in the intensive care unit (8.9 ± 9 vs 3.9 ± 2 days, P <.001), and postoperative hospital stay (14.8 ± 11 vs 9.2 ± 5 days, P <.001) than patients without TAMI. Twenty (38%) patients with TAMI were discharged to intermediate-care facilities, compared with 11 (8%) patients without TAMI (P <.001). Postoperative variables conferring the largest relative risks for development of TAMI included oxygen saturation less than 92% (5.4), the need for reintubation (3.3), congestive heart failure (3.3), and pneumonia (3.2). TAMI, conversely, conferred the largest relative risks for development of postoperative congestive heart failure (15.3), the need for reintubation (9.3), pneumonia (7.1), and the need for ICU readmission (3.8). Conclusions: These data show that TAMI is prevalent among patients undergoing aortic reconstruction and is associated with dramatically increased morbidity and postoperative hospitalization rates.
