    Malignant and noninvasive skin tumours in renal transplant recipients.

    Background. Transplant recipients require immunosuppression to prevent graft rejection. This conveys an increased risk of malignancy, particularly skin tumours. There is a need for up-to-date data for the South of England. Method. Pathology records were reviewed for 709 kidney transplant recipients on immunosuppression at our hospital from 1995 to 2008. Skin tumours were recorded/analysed. Results. Mean age at transplant was 46 years. Mean length of follow-up was 7.2 years and total follow-up was 4926 person-years. 53 (7.5%) patients (39/458 (8.5%) males and 14/251 (5.6%) females) developed ≥1 skin malignancy. Cumulative incidences of 4.0%, 7.5%, and 12.2% were observed for those with <5, <10, and ≥10 years follow-up, respectively. The rate was 45 tumours per 1000 person-years at risk. Additionally, 21 patients (3.0%) only had noninvasive tumours. 221 malignant skin tumours were found: 50.2% were SCCs, 47.1% BCCs, and 2.7% malignant melanomas. Mean years to first tumour were 5.8. Mean number of tumours per patient was 4, with mean interval of 12 months. Conclusions. Despite changes in transplantation practice during the time since the last data were published in this region, these findings are similar to previous studies. This adds to the evidence allowing clinicians to inform patients in this region of their risk

    Identifying the Micro-relations Underpinning Familiarity Detection in Dynamic Displays Containing Multiple Objects

    We identified the important micro-relations that are perceived when attempting to recognize patterns in stimuli consisting of multiple dynamic objects. Skilled and less-skilled participants were presented with point light display sequences representing dynamic patterns in an invasion sport and were subsequently required to make familiarity based recognition judgments in three different conditions, each of which contained only a select number of features that were present at initial viewing. No differences in recognition accuracy were observed between skilled and less-skilled participants when just objects located in the periphery were presented. Yet, when presented with the relative motions of two centrally located attacking objects only, skilled participants were significantly more accurate than less-skilled participants and their recognition accuracy improved further when a target object was included against which these relative motions could be judged. Skilled participants can perceive and recognize global patterns on the basis of centrally located relational information

    Correlations in ion channel expression emerge from homeostatic tuning rules.

    Experimental observations reveal that the expression levels of different ion channels vary across neurons of a defined type, even when these neurons exhibit stereotyped electrical properties. However, there are robust correlations between different ion channel expression levels, although the mechanisms that determine these correlations are unknown. Using generic model neurons, we show that correlated conductance expression can emerge from simple homeostatic control mechanisms that couple expression rates of individual conductances to cellular readouts of activity. The correlations depend on the relative rates of expression of different conductances. Thus, variability is consistent with homeostatic regulation and the structure of this variability reveals quantitative relations between regulation dynamics of different conductances. Furthermore, we show that homeostatic regulation is remarkably insensitive to the details that couple the regulation of a given conductance to overall neuronal activity because of degeneracy in the function of multiple conductances and can be robust to "antihomeostatic" regulation of a subset of conductances expressed in a cell.Swartz FoundationThis is the final version of the article.     Sensitivity of chemical-looping combustion to particle reaction kinetics

    A simple simulation for chemical-looping combustion (CLC) is discussed: two, coupled fluidised reactors with steady circulation of particles of oxygen carrier between them. In particular, the sensitivity of CLC to different particle kinetics is investigated. The results show that the system is relatively insensitive to different kinetics when the mean residence time of particles in each reactor is greater than the time taken for them to react completely.This is the final published version.     First Recorded Mating Flight of the Hypogeic Ant, Acropyga epedana, with its Obligate Mutualist Mealybug, Rhizoecus colombiensis

    On 26-July, 2005 a mating aggregation of Acropyga epedana Snelling (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) was observed in the Chiricahua Mountains in south-eastern Arizona. This is the first record of a mating flight of A. epedana, the only nearctic member of this pantropical genus. Mating behavior was observed, newly mated queens were collected, and a complete colony was excavated. New information is reported on the natural history and mating behavior of the species. The identity of a mealybug mutualist, Rhizoecus colombiensis (Homoptera: Rhizoecinae) is confirmed. Reproductive females participating in flights all carried mealybugs between their mandibles, indicating a vertical transfer of mealybugs with their ant hosts. No captured foundresses survived long in captivity, most likely due to the death of their mealybugs. The colony excavated had a single queen, though polygyny is common in the genus. Nearly all workers within the nest were heavily parasitized by mites, although males or gynes were not parasitized. These natural history observations are discussed with regard to this poorly understood mutualistic relationship between Acropyga ants and their mealybug partners

    Damage buildup in GaN under ion bombardment

    The damage buildup until amorphization in wurtzite GaN films under keV Light(C-12) and heavy (Au-197) ion bombardment at room and liquid nitrogen (LN2) temperatures is studied by Rutherford backscattering/channeling (RBS/C) spectrometry and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The effect of beam flux on implantation damage in GaN is reported. A marked similarity between damage buildup for Light and heavy ion bombardment regimes is observed. The results point to substantial dynamic annealing of irradiation defects even during heavy ion bombardment at LN2 temperature. Amorphization starts from the GaN surface with increasing ion dose for both LN2 and room-temperature bombardment with light or heavy ions. A strong surface defect peak, seen by RBS/C, arises from an amorphous layer at the GaN surface, as indicated by TEM. The origin of such an amorphous layer is attributed to the trapping of mobile point defects by the GaN surface, as suggested by the flux behavior. However, in the samples implanted with light ions to low doses (1 X 10(15) cm(-2)), no amorphous layer on the GaN surface is revealed by TEM. Damage buildup is highly sig-modal for LN: temperature irradiation with light or heavy ions. Formation of planar defects in the crystal bulk is assumed to provide a "nucleation site" for amorphization with increasing ion dose during irradiation at LN2 temperature. For room-temperature bombardment with heavy ions. the damage in the GaN bulk region saturates at a level lower than that of the amorphous phase, as measured by RBS/C, and amorphization proceeds From the GaN surface with increasing ion dose. For such a saturation regime at room temperature, implantation damage in the bulk consists of point-defect clusters and planar defects which are parallel to the basal plane of the GaN film. Various defect interaction processes in GaN during ion bombardment are proposed to explain the observed somewhat unexpected behavior of disorder buildup

    The effect of different particle residence time distributions on the chemical looping combustion process

    A model for chemical looping combustion has been developed to allow the effect of different residence time distributions of oxygen carrier particles in the air and fuel reactors to be investigated. The model envisages two, coupled fluidised bed reactors with steady circulation of particles between them. The results show that the process is sensitive to the residence time distributions, particularly when the mean residence time of particles in the reactors is similar to the time required for them to react completely. Under certain operating conditions, decreasing the variance of the residence time distribution, leads to a greater mean conversion of the particles by the time they leave the reactors and higher mean rates of reaction in the beds. In this way the required inventory and circulation rate of solids could be reduced, which would lower the capital and operating costs of a CLC process. Since the residence time distribution of solids is important, it should be taken into account when modelling or designing a chemical looping combustion process, e.g. by using a tanks-in-series model. This work indicates that if the number of tanks, N ≤ 5, knowing N to the nearest integer is generally sufficient, unless a high degree of accuracy is needed. As N increases, the sensitivity of the coupled system decreases, so for N > 5, knowing the value to the nearest 5 or 10 tanks is sufficient. This is valid whether N is the same or different in the two reactors. Chemical looping combustion is one example of a reactor-regenerator system, so the results are also relevant for other processes of this type, such as fluidised catalytic cracking
