Hydraena matyoti sp. n. (Coleoptera, Hydraenidae) is described from the Seychelles, Indian Ocean. Hydraena mahensis Scott, 1913 is redescribed. The latter is here recorded from La Digue for the first time. A key to the species of the genus Hydraena Kugelann, 1794 of the Seychelles is presented.Depto. de Biodiversidad, Ecología y EvoluciónFac. de Ciencias BiológicasTRUEpu

Popis slapoljuba (Insecta: Coleoptera: Elmidae) Hrvatske s napomenama

In this paper an annotated checklist of Croatian riffle beetles is presented. It is a result of a literature review, revision of museum collections, implementation of results from various environmental impact and baseline studies, as well as field investigations throughout Croatia from 2002–2013. Altogether 23 species in eight genera of Elmidae were identified. Five species are new for the Croatian fauna: Elmis rioloides (Kuwert 1890), Esolus angustatus (Müller 1821), E. pygmaeus (Müller 1806), Oulimnius tuberculatus (Müller 1806) and Stenelmis consobrina Dufour 1835. Furthermore, the occurrence of Elmis aenea (Müller 1806) in Croatia is confirmed.U ovom je radu dat popis slapoljuba Hrvatske s napomenama o njihovoj biologiji i staništima u Hrvatskoj.

La versión definitiva se publicó posteriormente en Zootaxa 2760 : 29-38 (2011)Using morphological and molecular analyses, the existence of two undescribed species, H. diazi from north–eastern Spain and French Pyrenees, and H. fosterorum from north–central Spain is confirmed. These species are members of a European endemic complex of hydraenid beetles, the Hydraena emarginata–saga clade, belonging to the ”Haenydra“ lineage. The two new species are described and the geographic range of the widespread H. saga is revised.A visit of the first author to the NMW was supported by Synthesys (Application AT–TAF–53); the work of IR was funded by projects CGL2007–61665 and CGL2010–15755.Peer reviewe

Checklist of the Hydraenidae (Coleoptera) of Turkey, with notes on distribution

    Get PDF
A checklist of the Hydraenidae recorded from Turkey is presented. The checklist includes data on the distribution and relevant references for 210 species/subspecies: two Aulacochthebius Leach, 113 Hydraena Kugelann, 21 Limnebius Leach, and 74 Ochthebius Leach. On the basis of their current distribution, the established 210 species/subspecies can be classified into 28 zoogeographical categories, grouped into six complexes. The largest number of species belongs to the group of Turkey endemics (49.05 %), which reflects the local character of the fauna. Copyright © 2011 · Magnolia Press

Elmis rietscheli Steffan, 1958 (Insecta: Coleoptera: Elmidae) u Hrvatskoj: prvi nalaz i DNA barkodiranje

    Get PDF
Elmis rietscheli Steffan, 1958 (Coleoptera: Elmidae) is a typical inhabitant of cold springs and small streams in the mountainous areas of Central Europe. Recently, three specimens of E. rietscheli were collected in the source area of the Šumi, a stream flowing from Mt Ivanščica, northern Croatia. The morphological identification of the specimens was confirmed by DNA barcoding. This is the first record of E. rietscheli from Croatia, and it represents the southernmost record for this species known to date.Tipična srednjoeuropska vrsta vodenog kornjaša iz porodice slapoljuba, Rietschelijev slapoljub, Elmis rietscheli Steffan, 1958 (Coleoptera: Elmidae), naseljava hladne izvore i malene vodotoke u središnjoj Europi.

Mastigocoleidae fam. nov., a New Mesozoic Beetle Family and the Early Evolution of Dryopoidea (Coleoptera)

With some 3,700 described species, Dryopoidea are a moderately diverse superfamily of beetles whose position within basal Polyphaga has been historically difficult to elucidate. Members of most extant dryopoid families are set apart from the majority of other polyphagans by their association with aquatic habitats, but little is known about the origin of these derived life habits and the phylogeny of the superfamily. Here we describe Mastigocoleidae Tihelka, Jäch, Kundrata & Cai fam. nov., a new family of Mesozoic dryopoids represented by fossils from the Cretaceous Yixian Formation in northeastern China (undescribed species; ~125 Ma), Crato Formation in northeastern Brazil (Mastigocoleus rhinoceros Tihelka & Cai gen. et sp. nov.; ~113 Ma), and amber from northern Myanmar (Mastigocoleus resinicola Tihelka & Cai gen. et sp. nov. and Cretaceocoleus saetosus Tihelka, Kundrata & Cai gen. et sp. nov.; ~99 Ma). Integrating the findings of recent molecular and morphological phylogenetic analyses, we recover Mastigocoleidae as an early-diverging dryopoid clade sister to the families Lutrochidae and Dryopidae, or less likely as a group of putative stem-dryopoids. Mastigocoleidae are most distinctly separated from all other dryopoid families by their whip-like antennae, with 11 antennomeres, reaching to the pronotal base, and with the scape broadest and longest, a short pedicel, and antennomeres II-XI more or less distinctively gradually tapering toward the apex. Mastigocoleidae indicate that the last common ancestor of Dryopoidea was likely terrestrial in the adult stage, and document character acquisitions associated with a specialization for aquatic life
