    OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to investigate cyst fluid levels of total iron, heme iron and free iron in benign endometriotic cysts and endometriosis-associated ovarian cancer (EAOC) and to demonstrate the significance of these biomarkers in differential diagnosis between EAOC and endometriotic cysts. METHODS: Cyst fluid samples were obtained from eleven patients with EAOC and thirty-six women with benign endometriotic cysts at the time of surgery. RESULTS: The median (± SD) total iron levels for endometriotic cysts and EAOC cysts were 244.4 ± 204.9 mg/L and 14.2 ± 36.6 mg/L, respectively. EAOC patients had much lower levels of iron-related compounds compared with endometriotic cyst samples (p< 0.001). When the total iron results were analyzed using the receiver operating characteristics (ROC) curve method, the optimum diagnostic cut-off point was 64.8 mg/L, sensitivity was 90.9%, specificity was 100%, positive predictive value (PPV) was 100%, and negative predictive value (NPV) was 97.3%. Patient demographic characteristics such as tumor size, age at operation, parity and menopause were not correlated with cyst fluid iron levels. We have experienced a case of endobronchial lipoma which was found at the orifice of the left lower lobe bronchus and obstructive pneumonia distal to it.     The bulk single-scattering properties of various randomly oriented aggregate ice crystal models are com- pared and contrasted at a number of frequencies between 89 and 874 GHz. The model ice particles consist of the ten-branched plate aggregate, five-branched plate aggregate, eight-branched hexagonal aggregate, Voronoi ice aggregate, six-branched hollow bullet rosette, hexagonal column of aspect ratio unity, and the ten-branched hexagonal aggregate. The bulk single-scattering properties of the latter two ice particle models have been calculated using the light scattering methods described in Part I, which represent the two most extreme members of an ensemble model of cirrus ice crystals. In Part I, it was shown that the method of physical optics could be combined with the T-matrix at a size parameter of about 18 to compute the bulk integral ice optical properties and the phase function in the microwave to sufficient ac- curacy to be of practical value. Here, the bulk single-scattering properties predicted by the two ensemble model members and the Voronoi model are shown to generally bound those of all other models at fre- quencies between 89 and 874 GHz, thus representing a three-component model of ice cloud that can be generally applied to the microwave, rather than using many differing ice particle models. Moreover, the Voronoi model and hollow bullet rosette scatter similarly to each other in the microwave. Furthermore, from the various comparisons, the importance of assumed shapes of the particle size distribution as well as cm-sized ice aggregates is demonstrated.Peer reviewedFinal Accepted Versio

    We offered medical and technological assistance to cleft lip and palate patients at the Odonto-Maxillo-Facial Center of Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam. We visited the hospital three times in two years from December, 1996 to December, 1998. We operated on 93 patients with cleft lip and/or palate, 2 patients with craniofacial microsomia, 2 patients with cheek defect caused by noma and 1 patient with von Reckinghasen\u27s disease. In Vietnam, there are many medical problems relating to cleft lip and palate patients, such as shortage of funds, medical disparity by regions and hospitals, insufficient numbers of oral surgeons and hospital beds for cleft lip and palate patients, and difficulty of obtaining new medical information from foreign countries. Most of these problems seemed doe to financial difficulties. For the present, medical assistance is necessary for the treatment of cleft lip and palate patients in Vietnam for the present

    Curcumin analog, GO-Y078, overcomes resistance to tumor angiogenesis inhibitors

    Tumor angiogenesis inhibition is one of the most potent strategies in cancer chemotherapy. From past clinical studies, inhibition of the vascular endothelial growth factor pathway successfully treats malignant tumors. However, vascular endothelial growth factor inhibitors alone cannot cure tumors. Moreover, resistance to small molecule inhibitors has also been reported. Herein, we show the antiangiogenic potential of a newly synthesized curcumin analog, GO-Y078, that possibly functions through inhibition of actin stress fiber formation, resulting in mobility inhibition; this mechanism is different from that of vascular endothelial growth factor inhibition. In addition, we examined the detailed mechanism of action of the antiangiogenesis potential of GO-Y078 using human umbilical venous epithelial cells resistant to angiogenesis inhibitors (HUVEC-R). GO-Y078 inhibited the growth and mobility of HUVEC-R at 0.75mol/L concentration. Expression analyses by microarray and RT-PCR showed that expressions of genes including that of fibronectin 1 were significantly suppressed. Among these genes, fibronectin 1 is abundantly expressed and, therefore, seems to be a good target for GO-Y078. In a knockdown experiment using Si-oligo of fibronectin 1 (FN1), FN1 expression was decreased to half of that in mock experiments as well as GO-Y078. Knockdown of FN1 resulted in the suppression of HUVEC-R growth at 24hours after treatment. Fibronectin is a key molecule contributing to angiogenesis that could be inhibited by GO-Y078. Thus, resistance to vascular endothelial growth factor inhibition can be overcome using GO-Y078

    Protocol for a multicentre, prospective observational study of elective neck dissection for clinically node-negative oral tongue squamous cell carcinoma (END-TC study)

    Introduction: In early-stage oral tongue squamous cell carcinoma (OTSCC), elective neck dissection (END) is recommended when occult lymph node metastasis is suspected; however, there is no unanimous consensus on the risks and benefits of END in such cases. The management of clinically node-negative (cN0) OTSCC remains controversial. This study, therefore, aimed to evaluate the efficacy of END and its impact on the quality of life (QoL) of patients with cN0 OTSCC. Methods and analysis: This is a prospective, multicentre, nonrandomised observational study. The choice of whether to perform END at the same time as resection of the primary tumour is based on institutional policy and patient preference. The primary endpoint of this study is 3-year overall survival. The secondary endpoint are 3-year disease-specific survival, 3-year relapse-free survival and the impact on patient QoL. Propensity score-matching analysis will be performed to reduce selection bias. Ethics and dissemination: This study was approved by the Clinical Research Review Board of the Nagasaki University. The protocol of this study was registered at the University Hospital Medical Information Network Clinical Trials Registry. The datasets generated during the current study will be available from the corresponding author on reasonable request. The results will be disseminated internationally, through scientific and professional conferences and in peer-reviewed medical journals
