    Nitrate in water can be hazardous to human health and also cause excess algal growth. Recent research has revealed agriculture to be a potential contributor to these problems. Nitrate (N03-) present in the soil, in amounts in excess of plant needs,may be leached through the soil profile to the groundwater and eventually to lakes and streams.     Evaluation and Enhancement of Carbon Sequestration Potential of Existing Vegetation along Roadsides

    The objectives of this study were to evaluate the vegetative composition and carbon sequestration potential of vegetation along a major roadway in Texas. Soil and vegetation were evaluated along IH-35 within Bexar County for composition and carbon content. Three 20 m transects were placed at each site and percent vegetative cover was estimated and above ground plant biomass, and soil was collected from three 0.25 m2 subplots along each transect. Plant and soil samples were analyzed for carbon content. Two non-native grasses, bermudagrass and King Ranch bluestem, were the dominant cover at all sites accounting for \u3e 90% coverage at several sites. Native plants were rare with only one species, western ragweed, accounting for \u3e 5% mean coverage at all sites. Carbon content of plant species was highest for bermudagrass (699 kg C ha-1) and King Ranch bluestem (401 kg C ha-1), and 6 of 7 sites contained significantly more carbon in non-native plants compared to native plants. The highest native plant carbon content was western ragweed with an average of 15 kg C ha-1. Mean soil carbon content ranged from 3.1 to 6.9 kg C m3 -1 among the sites, and significantly (P \u3c 0.05) greater amounts of carbon were recorded in the upper 0-10 cm compared to the 10-20 cm. The photosynthesis rates of Bermudagrass were significantly greater than rates recorded for King Ranch bluestem indicating the former species is highly adapted to hot semi-arid climate of central Texas, but King Ranch bluestem may gain a competitive advantage along roadways during the spring, fall and periods of increased precipitation. The total available area for the vegetation along the IH-35 highway in Bexar County is estimated to be approximately 81.7 ha (201.5 acres). We suggest the area between sites 5 and 6 (25.1 ha; 62 acres) are ideal locations for carbon sequestration using native plant communities including those with larger diameter woody stems such as trees

    Exploring the Relationship Between Academic, Demographic, and Sport Related Variables on Aggression: An Examination of Male Student-Athletes Enrolled in Texas High Schools

    The purpose of this non-experimental, regression study was to examine the relationships and contributions between six demographic predictor variables (ethnicity, socio-economic status, type of sport, grade level, level of sport participation, and self-reported acts of off-the-field physical aggression/fighting) on aggression (criterion variable), among male athletes enrolled in four high schools in Southeast Texas. To assess aggression levels, respondents completed a modified version of the Sport Behavior Inventory (SBI). This study utilized a hierarchical regression analysis to examine contributions made by variables to the overall model and relationships between variables. The analysis of data illustrated a strong relationship between type of sport and self-reported acts of off-the-field physical aggression/fighting and aggression. Results indicated that demographic and sport related variables had a statistically significant relationship with aggression levels of male high school athletes

    Duality Between Prefetching and Queued Writing with Parallel Disks

To combat this problem, we define a useful and natural duality between writing to parallel disks and the seemingly more difficult problem of prefetching. We first explore this duality for applications involving read-once accesses using parallel disks. We get a simple linear time algorithm for computing optimal prefetch schedules and analyze the efficiency of the resulting schedules for randomly placed data and for arbitrary interleaved accesses to striped sequences. Duality also provides an optimal schedule for prefetching plus caching, where blocks can be accessed multiple times. Another application of this duality gives us the first parallel disk sorting algorithms that are provably optimal up to lower-order terms. One of these algorithms is a simple and practical variant of multiway mergesort, addressing a question that had been open for some time

    Stillbirth and intrauterine fetal death: contemporary demographic features of >1000 cases from an urban population

    OBJECTIVES: Of 780 000 births annually in the UK, around 3300 are stillborn, a rate of approximately 4 per 1000 births. Traditional epidemiological associations are based on historic data. The aim of this study was to document contemporary demographic findings in a large series of > 1000 deaths in utero in London and compare these with national datasets. METHODS: From a dedicated database, including > 400 data fields per case, of fetal, infant and pediatric autopsies performed at Great Ormond Street Hospital and St George's Hospital, London, we extracted information on all intrauterine deaths, excluding terminations of pregnancy, from 2005 to 2013, inclusive. Demographic data were analyzed according to the gestational age at which fetal death occurred (second-trimester intrauterine fetal death (IUFD), subdivided into early (1000 autopsies in cases of intrauterine death, these data highlight the increased risk for fetal loss associated with maternal demographic factors in contemporary clinical practice, particularly associations with increased maternal age and body mass index. Among women in whom an intrauterine death occurs, maternal ethnicity, mode of conception and gynecological history are associated with differing timing of fetal loss. Further research is required to understand the mechanisms involved in such maternal factors in order to develop preventative strategies

    Disrupting the heritage of place: practising counter-archaeologies at Dumby, Scotland

    The notion of counter-archaeology is echoed by the opposing faces of the volcanic plug of Dumbarton Rock, Scotland. On the one side is the ‘official’ heritage of Dumbarton Castle, with its upstanding seventeenth-century military remains and underlying occupation evidence dating back to at least the eighth centuryad. On the other side lies a landscape of climbing, bouldering and post-industrial abandonment. This paper develops counter-archaeology through the climbing traditions and boulder problems at Dumbarton Rock and brings to the surface marginalized forms of heritage. Climbers and archaeologists have co-authored the paper as part of a collaborative project, which challenges the binary trope of researcher and researched and provides a model for a collaborative, co-designed and co-produced counter-archaeology
