Elements of Proximal Formative Assessment in Learners’ Discourse about Energy
Proximal formative assessment, the just-in-time elicitation of students\u27 ideas that informs ongoing instruction, is usually associated with the instructor in a formal classroom setting. However, the elicitation, assessment, and subsequent instruction that characterize proximal formative assessment are also seen in discourse among peers. We present a case in which secondary teachers in a professional development course at SPU are discussing energy flow in refrigerators. In this episode, a peer is invited to share her thinking (elicitation). Her idea that refrigerators move heat from a relatively cold compartment to a hotter environment is inappropriately judged as incorrect (assessment). The instruction (peer explanation) that follows is based on the second law of thermodynamics, and acts as corrective rather than collaborative
Caring, male African Americans, and mathematics teaching and learning
In this paper, the authors report on a qualitative study that explored the influence a “successful” African American male mathematics teacher had on three African American male high school students’ perceptions of teacher care. This critical ethnography study was guided by an intersection of an eclectic array of theoretical traditions, including care theory, critical race theory, and culturally relevant pedagogy. The study employed ethnographic methods during data collection; data analysis identified six overarching themes that the participants used to describe teacher care. Findings suggest that teachers should reconsider the ways they care for African American male students and that a caring teacher–student relationship has a positive influence on African American male students’ descriptions and perceptions of teacher care
Bright Ultraviolet Regions and Star Formation Characteristics in Nearby Dwarf Galaxies
We compare star formation in the inner and outer disks of 11 dwarf Irregular
galaxies (dIm) within 3.6 Mpc. The regions are identified on GALEX near-UV
images, and modeled with UV, optical, and near-IR colors to determine masses
and ages. A few galaxies have made 10^5-10^6 Msun complexes in a starburst
phase, while others have not formed clusters in the last 50 Myrs. The maximum
region mass correlates with the number of regions as expected from the
size-of-sample effect. We find no radial gradients in region masses and ages,
even beyond the realm of Halpha emission, although there is an exponential
decrease in the luminosity density and number density of the regions with
radius. Halpha is apparently lacking in the outer parts only because nebular
emission around massive stars is too faint to see. The outermost regions for
the 5 galaxies with HI data formed at average gas surface densities of 1.9-5.9
Msun/pc2. These low average densities imply either that local gas densities are
high or sub-threshold star formation is possible. The distribution of regions
on a log Mass - log age plot is is usually uniform along log age for equal
intervals of log Mass. This uniformity results from either an individual region
mass that varies as 1/age or a region disruption probability that varies as
1/age. A correlation between fading-corrected surface brightness and age

The Action of Instantons with Nut Charge
We examine the effect of a non-trivial nut charge on the action of
non-compact four-dimensional instantons with a U(1) isometry. If the instanton
action is calculated by dimensionally reducing along the isometry, then the nut
charge is found to make an explicit non-zero contribution. For metrics
satisfying AF, ALF or ALE boundary conditions, the action can be expressed
entirely in terms of quantities (including the nut charge) defined on the fixed
point set of the isometry. A source (or sink) of nut charge also implies the
presence of a Misner string coordinate singularity, which will have an
important effect on the Hamiltonian of the instanton.Comment: 25 page
Mode-locked Bloch oscillations in a ring cavity
We present a new technique for stabilizing and monitoring Bloch oscillations
of ultracold atoms in an optical lattice under the action of a constant
external force. In the proposed scheme, the atoms also interact with a
unidirectionally pumped optical ring cavity whose one arm is collinear with the
optical lattice. For weak collective coupling, Bloch oscillations dominate over
the collective atomic recoil lasing instability and develop a synchronized
regime in which the atoms periodically exchange momentum with the cavity field.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figure
