    Disruptive innovation in the healthcare sector : the advent of AI chatbots

    Over the last several decades, the healthcare sector has faced many challenges. These include a shortage of doctors, especially in rural areas, high clinical costs, and an increasing number of diseases needing to be treated. This thesis focuses on the potential and the limitations of an innovative way to solve problems in healthcare – use of AI chatbots. We highlight the user’s perspective concerning AI healthcare chatbot technology. Based on qualitative and quantitative research, we conclude that this novel technology offers new opportunities for diagnostics, enables work to be carried out more efficiently, and gives the patient the power to “self-diagnose”. AI chatbots have not yet reached their full potential due to legal restrictions, insufficient data, and the lack of capacity to integrate them into different systems. Even though the number of AI chatbot users is increasing, people trust chatbots less than doctors. To enhance user engagement and create a higher level of trust, credible entities such as doctors and the government could recommend the use of AI chatbots. The general acceptance of chatbots has to be analyzed per country since it is explained by socio-economic factors (education, age, income), personality-related factors (attitude to new things, curiosity) and communication behavior factors.Nas Ășltimas dĂ©cadas, o setor da saĂșde enfrentou muitos desafios. Nestes podem destacar-se a escassez de mĂ©dicos, especialmente nas zonas rurais, custos de tratamento elevados e um nĂșmero crescente de doenças a precisarem de ser tratadas. Esta tese foca-se no potencial e nas limitaçÔes de uma forma revolucionĂĄria de resolver problemas na ĂĄrea da saĂșde – o uso de chatbots de IA. Destacamos a perspetiva do utilizador em relação Ă  assistĂȘncia mĂ©dica atravĂ©s da tecnologia de chatbot de IA. Com base em pesquisas qualitativas e quantitativas, concluĂ­mos que esta tecnologia inovadora oferece novas oportunidades para diagnĂłsticos, permite que o trabalho seja realizado com mais eficiĂȘncia e oferece ao paciente a capacidade de se autodiagnosticar. Os chatbots de IA ainda nĂŁo atingiram todo o seu potencial devido a restriçÔes legais, dados insuficientes e Ă  falta de capacidade de integrĂĄ-los em diferentes sistemas. Ainda que o nĂșmero de utilizadores de chatbot de IA esteja a aumentar, as pessoas confiam menos nos chatbots do que nos mĂ©dicos. Para encorajar um maior envolvimento do utilizador e criar um nĂ­vel mais alto de confiança, entidades credĂ­veis como mĂ©dicos e o governo podem recomendar o uso de chatbots de IA. A aceitação generalizada dos chatbots deve ser analisada por paĂ­s, uma vez que Ă© explicada por fatores socioeconĂłmicos (educação, idade, rendimento), fatores relacionados com a personalidade (atitude perante coisas novas, curiosidade) e fatores de comportamento na comunicação

    Natural Language Interpretation for an Interactive Service Robot in Domestic Domains

    Abstract. In this paper, we propose a flexible system for robust natural language interpretation of spoken commands on a mobile robot in domestic service robotics applications. Existing language processing for instructing a mobile robot is often restricted by using a simple grammar where precisely pre-defined utterances are directly mapped to system calls. These approaches do not regard fallibility of human users and they only allow for binary processing of an utterance; either a command is part of the grammar and hence understood correctly, or it is not part of the grammar and gets rejected. We model the language processing as an interpretation process where the utterance needs to be mapped to the robot's capabilities. We do so by casting the processing as a (decisiontheoretic) planning problem on interpretation actions. This allows for a flexible system that can resolve ambiguities and which is also capable of initiating steps to achieve clarification. We show how we evaluated several versions of the system with multiple utterances of different complexity as well as with incomplete and erroneous requests

    Novel push-pull chromophores to prepare electro-optic modulators

    In recent years, a large number of push-pull organic molecules have been proposed as promising candidates for electronic and optical applications. Generally, the main effort has been focused on the design of chromophores with large first hyperpolarizability values (ÎČ); this would result in a wide variety of nonlinear optical (NLO) applications, such as modulators.[1,2] In this work, we report an experimental and theoretical investigation of the NLO properties of novel push-pull systems derived from the dicyanomethylene-4H-chromene (DCM) group. Particular attention will be paid to better understand the molecular and electronic properties of these systems by using vibrational spectroscopic techniques and electrochemistry. Furthermore, these materials have been tested in a silicon-organic hybrid modulator based on an integrated dual-mode interferometer.[3]Universidad de MĂĄlaga.     R-Mode – terrestrial navigation for maritime users

    Transport of passengers as well as cargo has become a key-issue for our modern economy. Especially the management of cargo traffic has become a fragile backbone for an economy that is based on “just-in-time” delivery and closely linked manufacturing processes. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) identified a gap in the provision of resilient navigation data for safe navigation of vessels sailing the world’s seas. Maritime transport has increased to an extent, where traffic regulations and restrictions have become essential to provide safe voyage on the “highways of the seas”. High traffic densities in demanding waters, like the narrow straits and vessel traffic separation schemes in shallow waters raise a demand and an increase in the requirements on reliable navigation data on-board of vessels for safe navigation. Furthermore, today’s world is facing acts of cybercrime on a daily basis and terrorism as well as growing tensions between states. All this is resulting in potential harmful threats against human life, the economy and for environmental pollution as well, when tempering with navigation systems is not detected or prevented. Current reports on Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) disturbances in the eastern Baltic and Skagen show the vulnerability of transport modes that rely solely on GNSS. To increase the resilience of the maritime transport and reduce the risk of using misleading information, national maritime administrations and service providers in the Baltic Sea region and worldwide are looking for solutions to identify and mitigate GNSS disruptions or deceptions. Following the IMO International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS), national maritime administrations are requested to investigate and in future provide means to ensure provision of resilient Position, Navigation and Timing (PNT). An opportunity is to use alternative navigation systems in conjunction with GNSS to achieve that. The Baltic Sea is a test area for a terrestrial navigation system, known as R-Mode, which reuses maritime shore infrastructure for the synchronized transmission of ranging signals. They are implemented as two additional carrier signals to the continuous medium frequency broadcast of maritime radio beacons and as new designed R-Mode one slot message broadcast of the Very high frequency Data Exchange System (VDES) base stations which will replace base stations of the Automatic Identification System (AIS) in the future. Since 2017, two projects implemented an R-Mode test bed in the southern Baltic Sea. Eight maritime radio beacons were equipped with R-Mode ready signal modulators and accurate clocks. This enabled R-Mode signal reception in a wide area of the southern Baltic Sea. Static and dynamic position experiments showed in agreement with the theory that accuracies of 10 to 30 m can be achieved at day-time or when stations in close distance are used. The performance at night-time is especially dependent on the distance of the receiver to the transmitter. The ranging performance is significantly reduced for larger distances due to interference of the main propagation path as ground wave with the sky wave. As an indicator for sky-wave induced signal degradation a change of the probability density function from Gauss to Laplace tape for the range estimation was observed. This might be usable for the design of future positioning algorithms. Beside the permanent R-Mode radio beacon implementation also experiment with VDES were conducted in two location at the Baltic Sea and on a lake in Germany. It shows the feasibility of that approach and the usability of the standardized R-Mode message for ranging and positioning. The experiments suggest that positioning with VDES R-Mode can be achieved with accuracies of 10 m in areas with good reception conditions. The maritime infrastructure which is used for the transmission of R-Mode ranging signals was optimized to provide differential GNSS data within an average radius of 250 km to the GNSS onboard receiver or to exchange data between ship and shore over distances of about 20 nm (varies very much) using AIS/VDES. Therefore, the geometry is usually not optimized for R-Mode. But it can be compensated by an increasing number of transmitters or preferably use VDES and radio beacon R-Mode transmitters at the same time. International cooperation between the Baltic Sea states can enable terrestrial navigation for maritime users in coastal waters for manageable costs

    Nature and Lability of Northern Adriatic Macroaggregates

    The key organic constituents of marine macroaggregates (macrogels) of prevalently phytoplankton origin, periodically occurring in the northern Adriatic Sea, are proteins, lipids and especially polysaccharides. In this article, the reactivity of various macroaggregate fractions in relation to their composition in order to decode the potentially »bioavailable« fractions is summarized and discussed. The enzymatic hydrolysis of the macroaggregate matrix, using α-amylase, ÎČ-glucosidase, protease, proteinase and lipase, revealed the simultaneous degradation of polysaccharides and proteins, while lipids seem largely preserved. In the fresh surface macroaggregate samples, a pronounced degradation of the α-glycosidic bond compared to ÎČ-linkages. Degradation of the colloidal fraction proceeded faster in the higher molecular weight (MW) fractions. N-containing polysaccharides can be important constituents of the higher MW fraction while the lower MW constituents can mostly be composed of poly- and oligosaccharides. Since the polysaccharide component in the higher MW fraction is more degradable compared to N-containing polysaccharides, the higher MW fraction represents a possible path of organic nitrogen preservation. Enzymatic hydrolysis, using α-amylase and ÎČ-glucosidase, revealed the presence of α- and ÎČ-glycosidic linkages in all fractions with similar decomposition kinetics. Our results indicate that different fractions of macroaggregates are subjected to compositional selective reactivity with important implications for macroaggregate persistence in the seawater column and deposition

    Due to the worldwide recognition of increased jamming and spoofing events, which threaten the usability of global navigation satellite systems (GNSS), positioning systems using signals of opportunity are gaining importance as backup systems. Especially for maritime usage, a terrestrial system called Ranging-Mode (R-Mode) is under development. Among other signals, it utilizes the maritime medium frequency broadcasts of the differential GNSS (DGNSS) service. Currently, the estimation of phase in a time continuous medium frequency signal is used to determine the distance between transmitter and receiver. Here, the delay of a transmitter on the signal phase is of great interest, since it directly affects the performance of the R-Mode system. In this paper, the influence of a medium frequency power amplifier is characterized as part of the transmitter chain. The aim is to give the operators of DGNSS stations the possibility to characterize their station themselves when the R-Mode system is operational. Therefore, widely used measuring instruments are utilized, rather than using well-known cost-intensive techniques like phase delay measurements. A simple setup with different evaluation methods that fit this requirement is presented. Furthermore, it is capable of measuring the absolute time delay. The presented workflow was tested on an amplifier with output power of 100W at the transmitter station near Koblenz, Germany

    Silicon Integrated Dual-Mode Interferometer with Differential Outputs

    The dual-mode interferometer (DMI) is an attractive alternative to Mach-Zehnder interferometers for sensor purposes, achieving sensitivities to refractive index changes close to state-of-the-art. Modern designs on silicon-on-insulator (SOI) platforms offer thermally stable and compact devices with insertion losses of less than 1 dB and high extinction ratios. Compact arrays of multiple DMIs in parallel are easy to fabricate due to the simple structure of the DMI. In this work, the principle of operation of an integrated DMI with differential outputs is presented which allows the unambiguous phase shift detection with a single wavelength measurement, rather than using a wavelength sweep and evaluating the optical output power spectrum. Fluctuating optical input power or varying attenuation due to different analyte concentrations can be compensated by observing the sum of the optical powers at the differential outputs. DMIs with two differential single-mode outputs are fabricated in a 250 nm SOI platform, and corresponding measurements are shown to explain the principle of operation in detail. A comparison of DMIs with the conventional Mach-Zehnder interferometer using the same technology concludes this work
