    Reading aloud in Dickens' novels

    My argument is that in response to the pervasive family and social activity of reading aloud in the Victorian age, Dickens composed his novels in ways that would further encourage and facilitate such practice. The focus of this essay will be Dickens' representation of characters' speech. This aspect is especially interesting since it highlights the relation between "fictional dialogue" and "natural speech." It seems that the more closely the fictional dialogue follows natural speech, the higher the level of orality achieved. Dickens employed explicit markers to simultaneously elicit and assist the oral reproduction of the distinctive voices of many of his characters--through phonetic spelling, narrative comments, and punctuation, or through a combination of the above. These markers illustrate plainly the writer's active participation in creating a unique possibility for spoken performance of his characters' voices. They also show that in the writing process Dickens took into account the "other" reader who read through listening, either due to illiteracy or because of a personal preference for aural reception. Although these markers have been mentioned by critics from a similar perspective,1 their function in relation to reading aloud has not been systematically recognized and studied.Not

    Gaussian process machine learning-based surface extrapolation method for improvement of the edge effect in surface filtering

    Filtering for signal and data is an important technology to reduce and/or remove noise signal for further extraction of desired information. However, it is well known that significant distortions may occur in the boundary areas of the filtered data because there is no sufficient data to be processed. This drawback largely affects the accuracy of topographic measurements and characterizations of precision freeform surfaces, such as freeform optics. To address this issue, a Gaussian process machine learning-based method is presented for extrapolation of the measured surface to an extended measurement area with high accuracy prior to filtering the surface. With the extrapolated data, the edge distortion can be effectively reduced. The effectiveness of this method was evaluated using both simulated and experimental data. Successful implementation of the proposed method not only addresses the issue in surface filtering but also provides a promising solution for numerous applications involving filtering processes

    Study of behavior of plastic modified bitumen by incorporating carbon black

    In recent years, the performance of polymer modified bitumen has been widely studied. This study reports a research carried out to investigate the properties of polymer modified bitumen (PMB) by using polypropylene as modifier, carbon black as additives, to examine the optimum ratio of polypropylene to carbon black. With this objective, sample preparation using wet mixing method combining high shear mix was firstly performed. Subsequently, 18 samples were developed for the study, of which the polypropylene (PP) contents 10%, 12%, 14%, 16%, 18% and 20% with 2%, 3%, 4% of carbon black content. Afterwards, samples were characterized by standard tests (Dynamic Shear Rheometer and Viscosity), and all the test results showed improved performance. Finally, the results concluded that the optimum binder-PP ratio PMB for applying is 14% PP with 3% carbon black

    A profile of the online dissemination of national influenza surveillance data

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Influenza surveillance systems provide important and timely information to health service providers on trends in the circulation of influenza virus and other upper respiratory tract infections. Online dissemination of surveillance data is useful for risk communication to health care professionals, the media and the general public. We reviewed national influenza surveillance websites from around the world to describe the main features of surveillance data dissemination.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>We searched for national influenza surveillance websites for every country and reviewed the resulting sites where available during the period from November 2008 through February 2009. Literature about influenza surveillance was searched at MEDLINE for relevant hyperlinks to related websites. Non-English websites were translated into English using human translators or Google language tools.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>A total of 70 national influenza surveillance websites were identified. The percentage of developing countries with surveillance websites was lower than that of developed countries (22% versus 57% respectively). Most of the websites (74%) were in English or provided an English version. The most common surveillance methods included influenza-like illness consultation rates in primary care settings (89%) and laboratory surveillance (44%). Most websites (70%) provided data within a static report format and 66% of the websites provided data with at least weekly resolution.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Appropriate dissemination of surveillance data is important to maximize the utility of collected data. There may be room for improvement in the style and content of the dissemination of influenza data to health care professionals and the general public.</p

    Hyperbaric oxygen upregulates cochlear constitutive nitric oxide synthase

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is a known adjuvant for treating ischemia-related inner ear diseases. Controversies still exist in the role of HBOT in cochlear diseases. Few studies to date have investigated the cellular changes that occur in inner ears after HBOT. Nitric oxide, which is synthesized by nitric oxide synthase (NOS), is an important signaling molecule in cochlear physiology and pathology. Here we investigated the effects of hyperbaric oxygen on eardrum morphology, cochlear function and expression of NOS isoforms in cochlear substructures after repetitive HBOT in guinea pigs.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Minor changes in the eardrum were observed after repetitive HBOT, which did not result in a significant hearing threshold shift by tone burst auditory brainstem responses. A differential effect of HBOT on the expression of NOS isoforms was identified. Upregulation of constitutive NOS (nNOS and eNOS) was found in the substructures of the cochlea after HBOT, but inducible NOS was not found in normal or HBOT animals, as shown by immunohistochemistry. There was no obvious DNA fragmentation present in this HBOT animal model.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The present evidence indicates that the customary HBOT protocol may increase constitutive NOS expression but such upregulation did not cause cell death in the treated cochlea. The cochlear morphology and auditory function are consequently not changed through the protocol.</p

    Application of Rat In Situ Single-pass Intestinal Perfusion in the Evaluation of Presystemic Extraction of Indinavir Under Different Perfusion Rates

    Background/PurposeFirst-pass effect has been an important concern for oral pharmaceuticals. An in vivo system was developed for measuring different concentrations of pharmaceuticals in the portal vein and hepatic vein (via the inferior vena cava) for delineating presystemic metabolism under different perfusion rates by using indinavir as an exemplary agent.MethodsAn in situ single-pass intestinal perfusion technique was modified from previous studies to concomitantly obtain portal and hepatic venous bloods. Portal and hepatic venous samples were simultaneously taken from rats at appropriate time points using the perfusion model of 1 mg/mL indinavir at flow rates of 0.05, 0.1, 0.5 and 1.0 mL/min. The indinavir concentrations were assayed by binary-gradient high-pressure liquid chromatography with UV detection.ResultsThe mean indinavir concentrations in portal vein concentration−time profiles at different perfusion times under various flow rates were all higher than those obtained for hepatic veins. At flow rates of 0.5 and 1.0 mL/min, in particular, the area under the curve (AUC) and maximal concentration (C max) of indinavir absorption were significantly different between portal veins and hepatic veins (p < 0.05), indicating considerable hepatic involvement in the presystemic extraction of indinavir. The system also has potential for use when estimating the hepatic extraction ratio (E H) and hepatic clearance (Cl H).ConclusionThis in vivo approach could provide another useful tool for improving our basic understanding of the absorption kinetics and hepatic metabolism of pharmaceuticals under development and facilitating the clinical application of such
