Quantum Error Correction on Linear Nearest Neighbor Qubit Arrays
A minimal depth quantum circuit implementing 5-qubit quantum error correction
in a manner optimized for a linear nearest neighbor architecture is described.
The canonical decomposition is used to construct fast and simple gates that
incorporate the necessary swap operations. Simulations of the circuit's
performance when subjected to discrete and continuous errors are presented. The
relationship between the error rate of a physical qubit and that of a logical
qubit is investigated with emphasis on determining the concatenated error

System support software for the Space Ultrareliable Modular Computer (SUMC)
The highly transportable programming system designed and implemented to support the development of software for the Space Ultrareliable Modular Computer (SUMC) is described. The SUMC system support software consists of program modules called processors. The initial set of processors consists of the supervisor, the general purpose assembler for SUMC instruction and microcode input, linkage editors, an instruction level simulator, a microcode grid print processor, and user oriented utility programs. A FORTRAN 4 compiler is undergoing development. The design facilitates the addition of new processors with a minimum effort and provides the user quasi host independence on the ground based operational software development computer. Additional capability is provided to accommodate variations in the SUMC architecture without consequent major modifications in the initial processors
Humber Bridge: suppressing main cable corrosion by means of dehumidification
The Humber Bridge officially opened in 1981 and carries 4 lanes of traffic across the Humber Estuary between Barton and Hessle to the west of Kingston-upon-Hull in East Yorkshire, England. When opened, it was the longest span suspension bridge in the world with a main span of 1410m but it currently ranks as the fifth longest span in the world. Humber Bridge Board (HBB) commissioned an internal inspection of the main cables following the discovery of extensive corrosion and broken wires in the main cables of two older suspension bridges in the UK. The main cable inspections revealed widespread, if generally light corrosion with localised pitting and a very small number of broken wires. Dehumidification of suspension bridge main cables is becoming standard practice not only in the UK but worldwide. This paper examines the installation of the Humber Bridge system, discusses the mechanics of atmospheric steel corrosion and explains how the cable dehumidification system will suppress future corrosion
Use of Social Media Across US Hospitals: Descriptive Analysis of Adoption and Utilization
Background: Use of social media has become widespread across the United States. Although businesses have invested in social media to engage consumers and promote products, less is known about the extent to which hospitals are using social media to interact with patients and promote health.
Objective: The aim was to investigate the relationship between hospital social media extent of adoption and utilization relative to hospital characteristics.
Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional review of hospital-related activity on 4 social media platforms: Facebook, Twitter, Yelp, and Foursquare. All US hospitals were included that reported complete data for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems survey and the American Hospital Association Annual Survey. We reviewed hospital social media webpages to determine the extent of adoption relative to hospital characteristics, including geographic region, urban designation, bed size, ownership type, and teaching status. Social media utilization was estimated from user activity specific to each social media platform, including number of Facebook likes, Twitter followers, Foursquare check-ins, and Yelp reviews.
Results: Adoption of social media varied across hospitals with 94.41% (3351/3371) having a Facebook page and 50.82% (1713/3371) having a Twitter account. A majority of hospitals had a Yelp page (99.14%, 3342/3371) and almost all hospitals had check-ins on Foursquare (99.41%, 3351/3371). Large, urban, private nonprofit, and teaching hospitals were more likely to have higher utilization of these accounts.
Conclusions: Although most hospitals adopted at least one social media platform, utilization of social media varied according to several hospital characteristics. This preliminary investigation of social media adoption and utilization among US hospitals provides the framework for future studies investigating the effect of social media on patient outcomes, including links between social media use and the quality of hospital care and services

HELIUM PHOTODISINTEGRATION AND NUCLEOSYNTHESIS: IMPLICATIONS FOR TOPOLOGICAL DEFECTS, HIGH ENERGY COSMIC RAYS, AND MASSIVE BLACK HOLES
We consider the production of He and H by He photodisintegration
initiated by non-thermal energy releases during early cosmic epochs. We find
that this process cannot be the predominant source of primordial H since it
would result in anomalously high He/D ratios in conflict with standard
chemical evolution assumptions. We apply this fact to constrain topological
defect models of highest energy cosmic ray (HECR) production. Such models have
been proposed as possible sources of ultrahigh energy particles and gamma-rays
with energies above eV. The constraints on these models derived from
He-photodisintegration are compared to corresponding limits from spectral
distortions of the cosmic microwave background radiation (CMBR) and from the
observed diffuse gamma-ray background. It is shown that for reasonable primary
particle injection spectra superconducting cosmic strings, unlike ordinary
strings or annihilating monopoles, cannot produce the HECR flux at the present
epoch without violating at least the He-photodisintegration bound. The
constraint from the diffuse gamma-ray background rules out the dominant
production of HECR by the decay of Grand Unification particles in models with
cosmological evolution assuming standard fragmentation functions. Constraints
