The Vienna School for Truth Exploration

    Get PDF
The [fantasy] Vienna School for Truth Exploration was founded by Ludwig Wittgenstein in 1918 [the Tractatus"s Preface date]. Its aim: Prepare students for exploring the world and its reality. Its textbook: The famous Tractatus. Its motto: "Argue or Agree!" The School has a peculiar aura of back-to-the-future, since its students have already been to a mid-nineteen forties Ludwig Wittgenstein"s lectures at Cambridge. It may get confusing, as these "two" philosophers happen to have exactly the same name. The students" names are Greek letters, Alpha, Beta, Gamma, etc. [In this paper, all the characters, including Wittgenstein, are fictitious. Sometimes they are the Tractatus Wittgenstein, sometimes they are the Investigations one, and often they are I]

Evaluation of the groundwater quality in Pariya

    Get PDF
Abstract: This article attempts to appraise the groundwater water quality of Pariya, Nigeria. Water samples was collected from 10 different borehole sources in the study area and analysed for the physicochemical factors such as pH, TDS, Total Hardness, Calcium, Magnesium, Sodium, Potassium, Chloride, Sulphate, Lead, Fluoride, Iron, Bicarbonate and total coliforms. The results of physicochemical quality was compared with the WHO standards. It was found that the physicochemical quality was within the permissible limits. The bacteriological analyses indicated the occurrence of total coliforms above the standards. It was recommended to adopt basic treatment by boiling before ingestion to safeguard against water borne diseases

Novel admixture for improvement of foundations on tropical expansive soils

: Black cotton soils have excessive shrinkage and swelling properties with respect to changes in the moisture conditions. Thus, construction on these soils may result in foundation problems. conventionally some approaches have been used to mitigate the problem by stabilization with lime or cement and which are relatively expensive for sustainability, an alternative stabilization was experimented with terrazzo waste. The polishing process of the terrazzo tiles produces a significant amount of waste slurry that it’s disposal could pose some environmental pollution threat. Laboratory experiments were conducted to determine the suitability of terrazzo waste as admixture in the stabilization of black cotton soil. Natural moisture content, atterberg limits, maximum dry density and optimum moisture content parameters were determined using 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10% proportion of terrazzo waste admixture. The results of the parameter analysis found the natural moisture content was 23.43%, liquid limit varied from 32.8 to 56.5%, Plasticity index varied from 4.71 to 13.52%, MDD varied from 1.61 to 1.67 (g/cm3) and OMC from 8.5 to 22.6%, the CBR value was indicates unsuitability for use as a base and sub-base material. The terrazzo waste admixture produced can be used for stabilization with the potential to minimize the cost of waste disposal as well as provide substitute to the use of conventional stabilizers for use in  places such as parks or pathways

Laterally constrained inversion of surface wave data at Najaf city (Iraq)

A case history is reported to outline a possible strategy for the construction of a pseudo-2D model of shear-wave velocity for seismic site response studies. Experimental data have been collected using the Multichannel Analysis of Surface Wave technique (MASW) at six sites in the city of Najaf (Southern Iraq). The sites are aligned along the route of a proposed subway. The dataset has been processed to extract the dispersion curves of each site and then it has been inverted by using a Laterally Constrained Inversion (LCI) algorithm. The initial model for the local search algorithm has been obtained with a preliminary Monte Carlo Inversion (MCI). A priori information from borehole logs and lateral constraints between neighbors 1D models are used to mitigate the non-uniqueness of the solution. The result is a pseudo-2D shear-wave velocity model of the area which is in good agreement with sediment lithology and thicknesses obtained from borehole logs

In this paper, we will define a new class of sets, called fuzzy neutrosophic weakly- generalized closed sets, then we proved some theorems related to this definition. After that, we studied some relations between fuzzy neutrosophic weakly-generalized closed sets and fuzzy neutrosophic α closed sets, fuzzy neutrosophic closed sets, fuzzy neutrosophic regular closed sets, fuzzy neutrosophic pre closed sets and fuzzy neutrosophic semi closed sets

Batch study on COD and ammonia nitrogen removal using granular activated carbon and cockle shells

Landfills generate leachate that contains elevated concentration of contaminants and is hazardous to human health and the ecosystem. In this study, the mixture of granular activated carbon and cockle shells was investigated for remediation of COD and ammonia from stabilized landfill leachate. All adsorbent media were sieved to a particle size between 2.00 and 3.35 mm. The optimum mixing ratio, shaking speed, shaking time, pH, and dosage were determined. Characterization results show that the leachate had a high concentration of COD (1763 mg/L), ammonia nitrogen (573 mg/L), and BOD5/COD ratio (0.09). The optimum mixing ratio of granular activated carbon and cockle shells was 20:20, shaking speed 150 rpm, pH level 6, shaking time 120 min, and dosage 32 g. The adsorption isotherm analysis reveals that the Langmuir isotherm yielded the best fit to experimental data as compared with the Freundlich isotherm. The media produce encouraging results and can be used as a good and economical adsorbent

Intercultural communication in the context of Saudi Arab tertiary education

© Springer Science+Business Media Singapore 2015. This chapter is a case study of intercultural communication in a tertiary educational setting in Saudi Arabia. Given the fact that educational institutions adopt Western models of education and employ foreign professors, this study aims at shedding light on the patterns of communication in the classroom. The elements of Hofstede\u27s five dimensional model, namely, uncertainty avoidance, individualism/collectivism, and power distance dimensions were applied for the purpose of analysis. The study involved in-depth interviews with 17 female students of a private university in the Eastern Province. While assessing the perception of the students about the communication patterns, it provides recommendations on improving the educational experience of local students taught by Western professors. Ultimately, the findings will contribute in promoting a culturally responsible education characterized by critical thinking skills, individual creativity, and movement out of comfort zones, which will prepare students for the globalized job market\u27s challenges
