Análisis de la primera vuelta de las elecciones presidenciales en ecuador : contexto e implicaciones para Colombia

En los últimos diez años, la inestabilidad política ha sido una constante en la realidad ecuatoriana. Desde que la democracia fue restablecida en 1979, la nación ha enfrentado diversas crisis que han puesto en evidencia las debilidades estructurales del sistema democrático, entre las cuales figuran: los problemas de representación, las disfuncionalidades institucionales, y la injerencia del legislativo y del ejecutivo en la rama judicial, entre otros. Los dos candidatos que accedieron a la segunda vuelta programada para el próximo 26 de noviembre han sido calificados como neopopulistas: Rafael Correa de izquierda y Álvaro Noboa de derecha. Estos fenómenos son sintomáticos de la convulsión política ecuatoriana tanto como de la inestabilidad que aqueja a la región andina y obstruyen su integración y proyección en el mundo. El presente comentario aborda cuatro aspectos básicos del resultado de las elecciones. En primer lugar, esboza el contexto histórico de la inestabilidad ecuatoriana en el último decenio. Segundo, analiza los resultados de la primera vuelta. Tercero, examina el perfil de cada candidato y las implicaciones de su eventual gobierno para Colombia, la región andina y el hemisferio. Finalmente, se ofrecen unas perspectivas con respecto a la segunda vuelta

La política exterior de Colombia se caracteriza por el compromiso firme con el multilateralismo, anuncia sin ambigüedad la estrategia de política exterior de Colombia para el periodo 2002-2006. A continuación ésta anticipa que nuestro país participará activamente en los foros internacionales, en especial aquellos en donde se debaten los temas de la agenda global más relevantes a la realidad colombiana, los cuales se identifican con: los derechos humanos, las drogas, el terrorismo, el medio ambiente, la cooperación internacional, entre otros.1 Todos ellos son temas inherentes a la labor de las Naciones Unidas en el mundo y en particular de la Asamblea General en donde tienen representación los 192 países del mundo

Association of the severity and progression rate of periodontitis with systemic medication intake

Background/purposeInformation on the systemic medication profiles of patients with periodontitis is limited. Therefore, this retrospective cross-sectional study aimed to analyze the relationship between the severity and rate of progression of periodontitis and systemic medication intake using a database of patients who attended the Clinic of Periodontics of the Faculty of Dentistry of the University of Costa Rica.MethodsElectronic health records of patients diagnosed with periodontitis based on the Classification of Periodontal and Peri-Implant Diseases and Conditions (2017) were evaluated. Individuals were further categorized based on the severity (stage) and rate of progression (grade). Data extracted from the patient records included age, sex, and self-reported medication intake.ResultsIn total, 930 records were included. Most of the studied population was middle-aged (36–64 years old); 43.01% were male, and 56.99% were female. Four hundred and fifty-seven patients (49.14%) reported taking at least one systemic medication for a chronic condition. Regarding the periodontal treatment phase, 62.37% underwent steps 1–3, and 37.63% underwent step 4. The most common systemic medications taken were for cardiovascular diseases (42.28%), followed by medications for diabetes (14.46%) and neurologic disorders (14.46%). Most patients (59.35%) were diagnosed with Stage III periodontitis. Grade B (48.28%) was the most prevalent. Calcium channel blockers demonstrated a disease severity-dependent association with the periodontal stage (p = 0.021). In addition, systemic medications for diabetes mellitus were associated with periodontal disease severity and rate of progression (all Ps < 0.05).ConclusionsThis study provides indirect evidence of the association between systemic diseases and periodontitis. The positive association between medications used to treat diabetes and the severity and rate of progression of periodontitis may be due to the underlying disease rather than the medications per se

Cytogenetic and genomic analysis of a patient with turner syndrome and t(2;12): a case report

Background: Turner syndrome is a genetic disorder that afects women. It is caused by an absent or incomplete X chromosome, which can be presented in mosaicism or not. There are 12 cases of Turner syndrome patients who present structural alterations in autosomal chromosomes. Case presentation: The present case report describes a patient with a reciprocal, maternally inherited translocation between chromosomes 2 and 12 with a mosaicism of X monosomy 45,X,t(2;12)(p13;q24)[95]/46,XX,t(2;12)(p13;q24) [5]. Through genetic mapping arrays, altered genes in the patient were determined within the 23 chromosome pairs. These genes were associated with the patient’s clinical features using a bioinformatics tool Conclusion: To our knowledge, this is the frst case in which a translocation (2;12) is reported in a patient with Turner syndrome and confrmed by conventional cytogenetics, FISH and molecular genetics. Clinical features of our patient are closely related with the loss of one X chromosome, however mild intellectual disability can be likely explained by autosomal genes. The presence of familial translocations was a common fnding, thus emphasizing the need for familiar testing for further genetic counselling

Primary care randomized clinical trial: manual therapy effectiveness in comparison with TENS in patients with neck pain

This study investigated effectiveness of manual therapy (MT) with transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) to reduce pain intensity in patients with mechanical neck disorder (MND). A randomized multi-centered controlled clinical trial was performed in 12 Primary Care Physiotherapy Units in Madrid Region. Ninety patients were included with diagnoses of subacute or chronic MND without neurological damage, 47 patients received MT and 43 TENS. The primary outcome was pain intensity measured in millimeters using the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS). Also disability, quality of life, adverse effects and sociodemographic and prognosis variables were measured. Three evaluations were performed (before, when the procedure ?nished and six months after). Seventy-one patients (79%) completed the follow-up measurement at six months. In more than half of the treated patients the procedure had a clinically relevant ?short term? result after having ended the intervention, when either MT or TENS was used. The success rate decreased to one-third of the patients 6 months after the intervention. No differences can be found in the reduction of pain, in the decrease of disability nor in the quality of life between both therapies. The Research Journey as a Challenge Towards New Trends

The academic community of the department of Risaralda, in its permanent interest in evidencing the results of the research processes that are carried out from the Higher Education Institutions and as a product of the VI meeting of researchers of the department of Risaralda held in November 2021 presents its work: “The journey of research as a challenge towards new trends”, which reflects the result of the latest research and advances in different lines of knowledge in Agricultural Sciences, Health Sciences, Social Sciences and Technology and Information Sciences, which seek to solve and meet the demands of the different sectors.
