Kapitza-Dirac Blockade: A Universal Tool for the Deterministic Preparation of Non-Gaussian Oscillator States

    Get PDF
Harmonic oscillators count among the most fundamental quantum systems with important applications in molecular physics, nanoparticle trapping, and quantum information processing. Their equidistant energy level spacing is often a desired feature, but at the same time a challenge if the goal is to deterministically populate specific eigenstates. Here, we show how interference in the transition amplitudes in a bichromatic laser field can suppress the sequential climbing of harmonic oscillator states (Kapitza-Dirac blockade) and achieve selective excitation of energy eigenstates, cat states, and other non-Gaussian states. This technique can transform the harmonic oscillator into a coherent two-level system or be used to build a large-momentum- transfer beam splitter for matter waves. To illustrate the universality of the concept, we discuss feasible experiments that cover many orders of magnitude in mass, from single electrons over large molecules to dielectric nanoparticles

Inelastic Kapitza-Dirac scattering: A scalable tool for deterministic preparation of non-Gaussian oscillator states

Harmonic oscillators count among the most fundamental quantum systems with important applications in quantum optics, solid-state physics, molecular physics, nanoparticle trapping, and quantum information processing. They are distinguished by their equidistant energy level spacing, a feature that is often desired but also a challenge if the goal is to deterministically populate specific target states. Here, we propose to use the inelastic Kapitza-Dirac effect as a means to solve this challenge. Quantum interference in inelastic Kapitza-Dirac scattering can suppress the sequential climbing of harmonic oscillator states and achieve selective excitation to Schr\"{o}dinger cat states or other non-Gaussian states for a wide range of harmonically trapped particles. We discuss the feasibility of experiments with single electrons, complex molecules, and dielectric nanoparticles

Glutamatergic transmission in the central nucleus of the amygdala is selectively altered in Marchigian Sardinian alcohol-preferring rats: Alcohol and CRF effects

    Get PDF
The CRF system of the central nucleus of the amygdala (CeA) is important for the processing of anxiety, stress, and effects of acute and chronic ethanol. We previously reported that ethanol decreases evoked glutamate transmission in the CeA of Sprague Dawley rats and that ethanol dependence alters glutamate release in the CeA. Here, we examined the effects of ethanol, CRF and a CRF1 receptor antagonist on spontaneous and evoked glutamatergic transmission in CeA neurons from Wistar and Marchigian Sardinian Preferring (msP) rats, a rodent line genetically selected for excessive alcohol drinking and characterized by heightened activity of the CRF1 system. Basal spontaneous and evoked glutamate transmission in CeA neurons from msP rats was increased compared to Wistar rats. Ethanol had divergent effects, either increasing or decreasing spontaneous glutamate release in the CeA of Wistar rats. This bidirectional effect was retained in msP rats, but the magnitude of the ethanol-induced increase in glutamate release was significantly smaller. The inhibitory effect of ethanol on evoked glutamatergic transmission was similar in both strains. CRF also either increased or decreased spontaneous glutamate release in CeA neurons of Wistar rats, however, in msP rats CRF only increased glutamate release. The inhibitory effect of CRF on evoked glutamatergic transmission was also lost in neurons from msP rats. A CRF1 antagonist produced only minor effects on spontaneous glutamate transmission, which were consistent across strains, and no effects on evoked glutamate transmission. These results demonstrate that the genetically altered CRF system of msP rats results in alterations in spontaneous and stimulated glutamate signaling in the CeA that may contribute to both the anxiety and drinking behavioral phenotypes

Humans in the focus for outstanding innovation

Innovation is regarded as being a process of recognition of current or future market needs and its conversion into products or services. In addition, process innovation is defined for internal or external change and redesign of workflows and societal behaviours. The efficiency of innovation is a conglomerate of organizational and leadership aspects, macro- and microeconomic backgrounds, technology access and more. The idea generation, the deployment and the development process is dependent on the corporate culture, management style but mainly of the employees in general. The author has undertaken a market investigation to find out, which group of human resources in a company the main innovation impulses are generated from. The analysis discloses the fact, that a huge mass of unused potential can be awaked by a more active management, leadership and motivation of the existing sources! Potential for impulses for efficient innovation are many. Also the use of external knowledge and development resources offer the chance to reduce time to market and to get a higher degree of differentiation. Networking in a proactive and constructive result oriented way be a part or getting inspiration, ideas and solutions. The successful path leads over the proper management of human resources, including shaping a mix of persons of various characters, selection of leaders, enabling and integrating more staff towards an active role in the innovation process and generous sponsorship by the top management. Enabling for performing and encouraging for heading to autonomous activity will lead to a leverage of individual contributions and the combination in a team and network to a higher output in quality or dimension
