    Characterization of IM7/8552 Thin-Ply and Hybrid Thin-Ply Composites

    Composite materials have increasingly been used for aerospace applications due to improved performance and reduced weight compared to their metallic counterparts. Inclusion of thin-ply material, plies with cured thickness half or less than standard composites, have potential to improve performance and reduce structural weight. Limited characterization of thin-ply IM7/8552 material in 30 and 70 grams per square meter fiber areal weights has been carried out using a series of selected American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) tests. Tests included unnotched tension, unnotched compression, v-notched rail shear, open-hole tension, and open-hole compression. Unidirectional, cross-ply, quasiisotropic and hybrid hard laminates were included in the study, and were compared to standard-ply laminates. Properties compared include fiber volume, laminate moduli, and failure strength, with failure modes also being examined. The thin-ply specimens exhibited similar or superior performance to standard ply laminates in many of the cases compared. Improvements in strength for laminates containing thin-ply material were seen for unidirectional laminates under unnotched tension, quasi-isotropic laminates under unnotched tension and compression, and hard laminates under open hole tension. Additional investigation is required to determine appropriate ply stacking rules for hybrids of thin and standard plies to avoid undesirable failure modes such as axial splitting. However, the observed performance improvements demonstrated by the conducted ASTM tests of hybrid thin-ply hard laminates could have benefits for improved structural weight in aircraft

    Exact and Asymptotic Inference in Clinical Trials with Small Event Rates under Inverse Sampling

    In this paper we discuss statistical inference for a two-by-two table under inverse sampling, where the total number of cases is fixed by design. We demonstrate that the exact unconditional distributions of some relevant statistics differ from the distributions under conventional sampling, where the sample size is fixed by design. This permits us to define a simple unconditional alternative to Fisher’s exact test. We provide an asymptotic argument including simulations to demonstrate that there is little power-loss associated with the alternative test when the expected response rates are rare. We then apply the method to design a clinical trial in cataract surgery, where a rare side effect occurs in one in one-thousand patients. Objective of the trial is to demonstrate that adjuvant treatment with an antibiotic will reduce this risk to one in two-thousand. We use an inverse sampling design and demonstrate how to set this up in a sequential manner. Particularly simple stopping rules can be defined when using the unconditional alternative to Fisher’s exact test

    Inflammatory pseudotumors (IPs), mostly benign lesions characterized by fibrotic ground tissue and polyclonal mononuclear infiltrate, may affect all organ systems. IPs originating in the central nervous system (IP-CNS) are very rare, and their distinct histopathologic features are poorly characterized. Three otherwise healthy patients (age 8, 15, and 17 years) presented with focal neurologic symptoms (seizures, n = 2; headaches, n = 1), corresponding to a left temporal, left occipital, and left frontal IP, respectively, extending from meningeal structures into brain tissue. After resection, no recurrence was observed in patient 1 during 5 years of follow-up, whereas patient 2 developed a rapidly progressive local recurrence and a second intracerebral lesion despite antiviral, immunosuppressive, antibiotic, and radiation therapy. In patient 3, who also showed local recurrences, sequential histopathologic investigations revealed transformation to a semimalignant fibrohistiocytic tumor. In this patient, anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK) expression was also positive, whereas it was negative in patient 1. A detailed literature analysis confirmed that most IP-CNS arise from dural/meningeal structures (n = 34). Intraparenchymatous (n = 7), mixed intraparenchymatous/meningeal (n = 4), and intraventricular lesions (n = 7) or IP extending per continuitatem from intracerebral to extracerebral sites (n = 5) were rare. The recurrence rate was 40% within 2 years in general. It was increased after incomplete resection and in female patients (multivariate Cox regression model, P < 0.02). Although rare, IP-CNS are important differential diagnoses among tumor-like intracranial lesions. Their potential risk of malignant transformation and high risk of recurrence necessitate close follow-up, especially when resection is incomplete. Prospective multicenter trials are needed to optimize classification and treatment of this rare inflammatory lesion. Copyright 2003, Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved

    Transformer models for electromagnetic transient studies with particular reference to HVdc transmission.

    In this thesis a formulation for incorporating general magnetic equivalent circuits in electromagnetic transient programs is presented. The formulation is applied to create new single-phase, and the first three-limb three-phase PSCAD-EMTDC program transformer models. The new models proposed are validated with laboratory, factory, and field data. Problems associated with magnetically independent phase representations of three-limb three-phase transformers are discussed. Considerable differences are shown in the behaviour of three-phase bank and three-limb three-phase transformers, particularly for the case of in-rush studies. The new transformer models arc applied to: the first intervalidation of the Harmonic Domain Analysis program with the widely accepted PSCAD-EMTDC program, investigating the division of magnetising current harmonics between transformer windings, and the development of a new means to reduce HVdc converter dc side harmonics; the smoothing transformer. The first set of field measurements from a group connected generator HVdc converter station are presented. A PSCAD-EMTDC model for the group connection is validated with the field data and used to investigate the transient behaviour of three-phase bank and three-limb three-phase converter transformers. Considerable differences are shown in the case of a single-phase ground fault

    Experimental evaluation of confidence interval procedures in sequential steady-state simulation

    Sequential analysis of simulation output is generally accepted as the most efficient way for securing representativeness of samples of collected observations. In this scenario a simulation experiment is stopped when the relative precision of estimates, defined as the relative width of confidence intervals at an assumed confidence level, reaches the required level. This paper deals with the statistical correctness of the methods proposed for estimating confidence intervals for mean values in sequential steady-state stochastic simulation. We formulate basic rules that should be followed in proper experimental analysis of coverage of different steadystate interval estimators. Our main argument is that such analysis should be done sequentially. The numerical results of our preliminary coverage analysis of the method of Spectral Analysis (SA/HW) and Nonoverlapping Batch Means are presented, and compared with those obtained by traditional, non-sequential approaches

    The article deals with the problems of the impact of tourism, including pilgrimage, on the socio-cultural environment of modern society, changes and reformatting of the gender restrictions of religious content. Investigated the access restrictions based on gender to objects of tourist interest as an example of socio-religious phenomenon “avaton” monastic republic of Athos in Northern Greece. Avaton regarded as a characteristic example of the alignment and sustained physical boundaries of the gender division, which for centuries allows preserving the unique closed social system. The paper focuses on the very concept of gender segregation, signs of it in the archaic and modern religions and on the relationship between the sexual divisions of the principles of Orthodox monasticism. The authors considered conflict of values of modern Western society and conservative traditions of Eastern Christianity. Gender discrimination is contrasted with the need to preserve the unique social phenomenon as part of the socio-cultural heritage of humanity

    Urbanization impacts on the climate in Europe: Numerical experiments by the PSU-NCAR Mesoscale Model (MM5)

    The objective of this study is to investigate the effects of urban land on the climate in Europe on local and regional scales. Effects of urban land cover on the climate are isolated using the fifth-generation Pennsylvania State University-National Center for Atmospheric Research (PSU-NCAR) Mesoscale Model (MM5) with a modified land surface scheme based on the Town Energy Budget model. Two model scenarios represent responses of climate to different states of urbanization in Europe: 1) no urban areas and 2) urban land in the actual state in the beginning of the twenty-first century. By comparing the simulations of these contrasting scenarios, spatial differences in near-surface temperature and precipitation are quantified. Simulated near-surface temperatures and an urban heat island for January and July over a period of 6 yr (2000-05) agree well with corresponding measurements at selected urban areas. The conversion of rural to urban land results in statistically significant changes to precipitation and near-surface temperature over areas of the land cover perturbations. The diurnal temperature range in urbanized regions was reduced on average by 1.26 degrees +/- 0.71 degrees C in summer and by 0.73 degrees +/- 00.54 degrees C in winter. Inclusion of urban areas results in an increase of urban precipitation in winter (0.09 +/- 00.16 mm day(-1)) and a precipitation reduction in summer (-0.05 +/- 0.22 mm day(-1)). [References: 49
