    A spatial decomposition based math-heuristic approach to the asset protection problem

    This paper addresses the highly critical task of planning asset protection activities during uncontrollable wildfires known in the literature as the Asset Protection Problem (APP). In the APP each asset requires a protective service to be performed by a set of emergency response vehicles within a specific time period defined by the spread of fire. We propose a new spatial decomposition based math-heuristic approach for the solution of large-scale APPs. The heuristic exploits the property that time windows are geographically correlated as fire spreads across a landscape. Thus an appropriate division of the landscape allows the problem to be decomposed into smaller more tractable sub-problems. The main challenge then is to minimise the difference between the final locations of vehicles from one division to the optimal starting locations of the next division. The performance of the proposed approach is tested on a set of benchmark instances from the literature and compared to the most recent Adaptive Large Neighborhood Search (ALNS) algorithm developed for the APP. The results show that our proposed solution approach outperforms the ALNS algorithm on all instances with comparable computation time. We also see a trend with the margin of out-performance becoming more significant as the problems become larger

    This chapter sets out to illustrate the dictum that there is (almost) nothing new under the sun. More specifically, its goal is to make the unfamiliar familiar within the field of data analytics. The need for such a treatment can be gauged from the plethora of terms currently vying for attention in the contemporary data analysis landscape, which can be puzzling even for seasoned researchers. These terms include: data mining, data science, data analytics, machine learning, deep learning, neural networks, and artificial intelligence. Hybrid terms such as ā€˜big data analyticsā€™ are also emerging. As for the current front-runner term, data analytics, the evidence provided by the number of search engine hits reveals multiple competing versions subdivided by application domains, ranging from business analytics and crime analytics, to performance analytics, visual analytics, and many more. There is also an emerging software sub-industry providing tools for data analytics, many of which are named after the company which originally developed them

    Tumor site immune markers associated with risk for subsequent basal cell carcinomas.

    BackgroundBasal cell carcinoma (BCC) tumors are the most common skin cancer and are highly immunogenic.ObjectiveThe goal of this study was to assess how immune-cell related gene expression in an initial BCC tumor biopsy was related to the appearance of subsequent BCC tumors.Materials and methodsLevels of mRNA for CD3Īµ (a T-cell receptor marker), CD25 (the alpha chain of the interleukin (IL)-2 receptor expressed on activated T-cells and B-cells), CD68 (a marker for monocytes/macrophages), the cell surface glycoprotein intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1), the cytokine interferon-Ī³ (IFN-Ī³) and the anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10 were measured in BCC tumor biopsies from 138 patients using real-time PCR.ResultsThe median follow-up was 26.6 months, and 61% of subjects were free of new BCCs two years post-initial biopsy. Patients with low CD3Īµ CD25, CD68, and ICAM-1 mRNA levels had significantly shorter times before new tumors were detected (pā€Š=ā€Š0.03, pā€Š=ā€Š0.02, pā€Š=ā€Š0.003, and pā€Š=ā€Š0.08, respectively). Furthermore, older age diminished the association of mRNA levels with the appearance of subsequent tumors.ConclusionsOur results show that levels of CD3Īµ, CD25, CD68, and ICAM-1 mRNA in BCC biopsies may predict risk for new BCC tumors

    Pressure-induced amorphization and polyamorphism in one-dimensional single crystal TiO2 nanomaterials

    The structural phase transitions of single crystal TiO2-B nanoribbons were investigated in-situ at high-pressure using the synchrotron X-ray diffraction and the Raman scattering. Our results have shown a pressure-induced amorphization (PIA) occurred in TiO2-B nanoribbons upon compression, resulting in a high density amorphous (HDA) form related to the baddeleyite structure. Upon decompression, the HDA form transforms to a low density amorphous (LDA) form while the samples still maintain their pristine nanoribbon shape. HRTEM imaging reveals that the LDA phase has an {\alpha}-PbO2 structure with short range order. We propose a homogeneous nucleation mechanism to explain the pressure-induced amorphous phase transitions in the TiO2-B nanoribbons. Our study demonstrates for the first time that PIA and polyamorphism occurred in the one-dimensional (1D) TiO2 nanomaterials and provides a new method for preparing 1D amorphous nanomaterials from crystalline nanomaterials.Comment: 4 figure
