    CD133: a potential indicator for differentiation and prognosis of human cholangiocarcinoma.

However, recent studies have revealed that CD133 is not restricted to CSC but to be expressed not only in human normal tissues but also in some cancers and could serve as a prognostic factor for the patients. Nevertheless, the expression of CD133 in human cholangiocarcinoma (CC) is rare and our study is to detect the expression and explore the potential functions of CD133 in human CC. METHODS: Fifty-nine cases, comprised of 5 normal liver tissues and 54 consecutive CC specimens (21 well-differentiated, 12 moderately-differentiated and 21 poorly-differentiated), were included in the study. Immunohistochemical stainning with CD133 protein was carried out, and statistical analyses were performed. RESULTS: CD133 was found to express in all 5 normal livers and 40 out of 54 (74%) CC tissues with different subcellular localization. In the well, moderately and poorly differentiated cases, the numbers of CD133 positive cases were 19 (19 of 21, 90%), 10 (10 of 12, 83%) and 11 (11 of 21, 52%) respectively. Further statistical analyses indicated that the expression and different subcellular localization of CD133 were significantly correlated with the differentiation status of tumors (P = 0.004, P = 0.009). Among 23 patients followed up for survival, the median survival was 4 months for fourteen CD133 negative patients but 14 months for nine CD133 positive ones. In univariate survival analysis, CD133 negative expression correlated with poor prognosis while CD133 positive expression predicted a favorable outcome of CC patients (P = 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Our study demonstrates that CD133 expression correlates with the differentiation of CC and indicates that CD133 is a potential indicator for differentiation and prognosis of human CC.Published versio

    Productivity prediction of fractured horizontal wells with low permeability flow characteristics

    Horizontal well and large-scale fracturing are revolutionary technologies in  petroleum industry. The technologies bring obvious economic benefits to exploiting unconventional oil and gas reservoirs with low permeability, ultra-low permeability and shale gas. With the increasingly extensive application of these technologies, other correlated technologies have also gained great development. However, low-permeability reservoirs exhibit complicated features and horizontal well fractures have complex shape. The existing methods for the productivity prediction of fractured horizontal well in low-permeability reservoirs rarely consider the influencing factors in a comprehensive manner. In this paper, a horizontal well seepage model of casing fracturing completion was established according to the superposition principle of low-permeability reservoir and the relationship between potential and pressure, by which model the seepage characteristics of low-permeability reservoirs could be fully described. Based on the established new seepage model, a new targeted model with coupling seepage and wellbore flow was established for the productivity prediction of low-permeability fractured horizontal well. Finally, the new targeted model was verified through field experiment. The experimental results confirmed the reliability of productivity prediction by the proposed model. Sensitivity analysis was then performed on the parameters in the proposed model

    Semi-quantitative analysis of geological samples using laser plasma time-of-flight mass spectrometry

    A method has been developed that allows the direct measurement of the elemental composition of geological samples based on a newly developed laser plasma time-of-flight mass spectrometer with a collisional cooling system. This technique has the merits of small sample consumption and rapid elemental analysis. Four geological reference materials were used in the experiment. The system has shown a satisfactory resolving power with few interferences in the spectra. The limits of detection were about 10(-6)-10(-7) g g(-1) for most of the metal elements.     Incremental prognostic value of ADC histogram analysis in patients with high-risk prostate cancer receiving adjuvant hormonal therapy after radical prostatectomy

    PurposeTo investigate the incremental prognostic value of preoperative apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) histogram analysis in patients with high-risk prostate cancer (PCa) who received adjuvant hormonal therapy (AHT) after radical prostatectomy (RP).MethodsSixty-two PCa patients in line with the criteria were enrolled in this study. The 10th, 50th, and 90th percentiles of ADC (ADC10, ADC50, ADC90), the mean value of ADC (ADCmean), kurtosis, and skewness were obtained from the whole-lesion ADC histogram. The Kaplan–Meier method and Cox regression analysis were used to analyze the relationship between biochemical recurrence-free survival (BCR-fs) and ADC parameters and other clinicopathological factors. Prognostic models were constructed with and without ADC parameters.ResultsThe median follow-up time was 53.4 months (range, 41.1-79.3 months). BCR was found in 19 (30.6%) patients. Kaplan−Meier curves showed that lower ADCmean, ADC10, ADC50, and ADC90 and higher kurtosis could predict poorer BCR-fs (all p<0.05). After adjusting for clinical parameters, ADC50 and kurtosis remained independent prognostic factors for BCR-fs (HR: 0.172, 95% CI: 0.055-0.541, p=0.003; HR: 7.058, 95% CI: 2.288-21.773, p=0.001, respectively). By adding ADC parameters to the clinical model, the C index and diagnostic accuracy for the 24- and 36-month BCR-fs were improved.ConclusionADC histogram analysis has incremental prognostic value in patients with high-risk PCa who received AHT after RP. Combining ADC50, kurtosis and clinical parameters can improve the accuracy of BCR-fs prediction

    Polymerization of micropollutants in natural aquatic environments: A review

    Micropollutants with high ecotoxicological risks are frequently detected in aquatic environments, which has aroused great concern in recent years. Humification is one of the most important natural detoxification processes of aquatic micropollutants, and the core reactions of this process are polymerization and coupling. During humification, micropollutants are incorporated into the macrostructures of humic substances and precipitated from aqueous systems into sediments. However, the similarities and differences among the polymerization/coupling pathways of micropollutants in different oxidative systems have not been systematically summarized in a review. This article reviews the current knowledge on the weak oxidation-induced spontaneous polymerization/coupling transformation of micropollutants. First, four typical weak oxidative conditions for the initiation of micropollutant polymerization reactions in aquatic environments are compared: enzymatic catalysis, biomimetic catalysis, metal oxide oxidation, and photo-initiated oxidation. Second, three major subsequent spontaneous transformation pathways of micropollutants are elucidated: radical polymerization, nucleophilic addition/substitution and cyclization. Different solution conditions are also summarized. Furthermore, the importance of toxicity evolution during the weak oxidation-induced coupling/polymerization of micropollutants is particularly emphasized. This review provides a new perspective for the transformation mechanism and pathways of micropollutants from aquatic systems into sediments and the atmosphere and offers theoretical support for developing micropollutant control technologies.
