Criteria of Successful IT Projects from Management's Perspective

The aim of this paper is to compile a model of IT project success from management's perspective. Therefore, a qualitative research approach is proposed by interviewing IT managers on how their companies evaluate the success of IT projects. The evaluation of the survey provides fourteen success criteria and four success dimensions. This paper also thoroughly analyzes which of these criteria the management considers especially important and which ones are being missed in daily practice. Additionally, it attempts to identify the relevance of the discovered criteria and dimensions with regard to the determination of IT project success. It becomes evident here that the old-fashioned Iron Triangle still plays a leading role, but some long-term strategical criteria, such as value of the project, customer perspective or impact on the organization, have meanwhile caught up or pulled even

IT Project Success from the Management Perspective - A Quantitative Evaluation

This work investigates the effects that different success criteria and their dimensions may have on the success of IT projects. It focuses on a model that represents the management's view of the success of an IT project. This is of particular interest due to demand for developing and examining such a model. To show the effects of the success criteria and their dimensions a survey of 646 participants was conducted. The effects of the criteria and dimensions on IT project success were subsequently studied with structural equation modeling. Because of some inconsistencies within the original model of IT project success a deducted model had to be developed. Some of the success criteria and dimensions had to be rearranged or removed from the original model due to the results of the study. The new model shows that the perception and the results of a project have a significant impact on the success rating of an IT project

Untersuchungen zur Auswirkung erhöhten Stimmaufwands auf Sprache unter Einbezug des Anwendungsfalls der automatischen Sprechererkennung

Das Ziel dieser Arbeit war die Analyse der Auswirkung erhöhten Stimmaufwands auf Sprache und sprachverarbeitende Systeme. Als Beispielszenario wurde die automatische Sprechererkennung bei ungleichem Stimmaufwand in Trainings- und Testdaten ausgewählt. Hierbei wurden zwei Schwerpunkte gesetzt. Zunächst wurden die akustischen Veränderungen, bedingt durch erhöhten Stimmaufwand, analysiert. Dann wurde ein Sprecherverifikationssystem für nicht-übereinstimmenden Stimmaufwand realisiert. Die Untersuchung akustischer Veränderungen bei erhöhtem Stimmaufwand befasste sich mit der statistischen Analyse spektraler Veränderungen bei einer Erhöhung des Stimmaufwands. Es wurden unterschiedliche spektrale Parameter analysiert und miteinander verglichen. Diese Parameter wurden dann zur automatischen Klassifikation des Stimmaufwands genutzt und systematisch evaluiert. Da bekannt war, dass sich sowohl das Spektrum als auch die Grundfrequenz verändern, schloss sich eine Analyse der Zusammenhänge zwischen der Grundfrequenz und den spektralen Parametern an. Zur Realisierung eines Sprecherverifikationssystems für nicht-übereinstimmenden Stimmaufwand wurde zunächst ein Framework zur automatischen Sprechererkennung implementiert. Um die Sprechererkennung bei unterschiedlichem Stimmaufwand zu verbessern wurden verschiedene Standardmerkmale, grundfrequenzbasierte Merkmale und selbst entwickelte Merkmale hinsichtlich des Einflusses erhöhten Stimmaufwands evaluiert und die besten Merkmale sowie Merkmalskombinationen bestimmt. Zur weiteren Verbesserung wurden Verfahren zur Adaption der Testdaten oder der Modelle untersucht. Im Anschluss wurden die besten Ergebnisse aller Tests vergleichend dargestellt. Abschließend wurden die Ergebnisse der Arbeit zusammenfassend präsentiert und mögliche Fortführungen der Arbeit vorgestellt

Eastward Voyages and the Late Medieval European Worldview

This thesis explores the nature of the late medieval European worldview in the context of the thirteenth- and fourteenth-century European journeys to Asia. It aims to determine the precise influence of these journeys on the wider European Weltbild. In lending equal weight to the accounts of the eastward travellers and the sources authored by their counterparts in Europe, who did not travel to Asia, the present study draws together two related strands in medieval historiography: the study of medieval European cosmology and worldview, and the study of medieval travel and travel literature. This thesis treats the journeys as medieval Europe’s interaction with Asia, outlining how travellers formed their perceptions of ‘the East’ through their encounters with Asian people and places. It also explores the transmission of information and ideas from travellers to their European contemporaries, suggesting that the peculiar textual culture of the Middle Ages complicated this process greatly and so minimised the transfer of ‘intact’ perceptions as the travellers originally formed them. The study contends instead that the eastward journeys shaped the late medieval European world picture in a different way, without overturning the concepts that underpinned it. Rather, this thesis argues, thirteenth- and fourteenth-century eastward voyages subtly altered how Europeans were inclined to understand these underpinning concepts. It suggests that the journeys intensified and made the concepts more immediate in Europeans’ minds and that they ‘normalised’ travel itself to the point where it became an essential part of the way Europeans could most readily make sense of the vast and kaleidoscopic world around them
