    Performance analysis of cooperative and non-cooperative relaying over VLC channels

    The line-of-sight (LoS) channel is one of the requirements for efficient data transmission in visible-light communications (VLC), but this cannot always be guaranteed in indoor applications for a variety of reasons, such as moving objects and the layout of rooms. The relay-assisted VLC system is one of the techniques that can be used to address this issue and ensures seamless connectivity. This paper investigates the performance of half-duplex (HD) conventional DF relay system and cooperative systems (i.e., selective DF (SDF) and incremental DF (IDF)) over VLC channels in terms of outage probability and energy consumption. Analytical expressions for both outage probability and the minimum energy-per-bit performance of the aforementioned relaying systems are derived. Furthermore, Monte Carlo simulations are provided throughout the paper to validate the derived expressions. The results show that exploiting SDF and IDF relaying schemes can achieve approximately 25% and 15% outage probability enhancement compared to single-hop and DF protocols, respectively. The results also demonstrate that the performance of the single-hop VLC system deteriorates when the end-to-end distances become larger. For example, when the vertical distance is 3.5m, the single-hop approach consumes 20%, 40% and 45% more energy in comparison to the DF, SDF, and IDF approaches, respectively

    Channel modeling for overhead line equipment for train communication

    The demand for high-speed data access to railway infrastructure and internet broadband data in railway is increasing due to the high density of the trains and passengers. Currently, communication access in trains is based on radio frequency (RF) wireless access networks that are slow and insufficient for the demands of the high-speed railway (HSR) and its customers. However, performance, service attributes, frequency band, and industrial support should be considered for the selection of a suitable communication system that can fulfill the requirements of HSR operation. This paper investigates overhead line equipment (OLE) as access network connecting trains to the backbone communication networks. The ABCD transmission model is used to represent the transfer function of the OLE channel. It was shown that transmission over OLE is affected by the frequency and link distance. The simulation results also show that the channel gain of the OLE channel attenuated faster at higher speeds compared to train movement at lower speeds

    On the performance of DF-based power-line/visible-light communication systems

    This paper presents a comprehensive performance analysis of an integrated indoor power line communication (PLC)/visible light communication (VLC) system with the presence of a decode-and-forward (DF) relay. The existing indoor power line networks are used as the backbone for VLCs. The performance of the proposed system is evaluated in terms of the average capacity and the outage probability. A new unified mathematical method is developed for the PLC/VLC system and analytical expressions for the aforementioned performance metrics are derived. Monte Carlo simulations are provided throughout the paper to verify the correctness of the analysis. The results reveal that the performance of the proposed system deteriorates with increasing the end-to-end distance and improves with increasing the relay transmit power. It is also shown that the outage probability of the system under consideration is negatively affected by the vertical distance to user plane

    Determination of thermal conductivity of inhomogeneous orthotropic materials from temperature measurements

    We consider the two-dimensional inverse determination of the thermal conductivity of inhomogeneous orthotropic materials from internal temperature measurements. The inverse problem is general and is classified as a function estimation since no prior information about the functional form of the thermal conductivity is assumed in the inverse calculation. The least-squares functional minimizing naturally the gap between the measured and computed temperature leads to a set of direct, sensitivity and adjoint problems, which have forms of direct well-posed initial boundary value problems for the heat equation, and new formulas for its gradients are derived. The conjugate gradient method employs recursively the solution of these problems at each iteration. Stopping the iterations according to the discrepancy principle criterion yields a stable solution. The employment of the Sobolev -gradient is shown to result in much more robust and accurate numerical reconstructions than when the standard -gradient is used

    Multi-commodity optimization of peer-to-peer energy trading resources in smart grid

    Utility maximization is a major priority of prosumers participating in peer-to-peer energy trading and sharing (P2P-ETS). However, as more distributed energy resources integrate into the distribution network, the impact of the communication link becomes significant. We present a multi-commodity formulation that allows the dual-optimization of energy and communication resources in P2P-ETS. On one hand, the proposed algorithm minimizes the cost of energy generation and communication delay. On the other hand, it also maximizes the global utility of prosumers with fair resource allocation. We evaluate the algorithm in a variety of realistic conditions including a time-varying communication network with signal delay signal loss. The results show that the convergence is achieved in a fewer number of time steps than the previously proposed algorithms. It is further observed that the entities with a higher willingness to trade the energy acquire more satisfactions than others

    Does timing of decisions in a mixed duopoly matter?

    We determine the endogenous order of moves in a mixed pricesetting duopoly. In contrast to the existing literature on mixed oligopolies we establish the payo equivalence of the games with an exogenously given order of moves if the most plausible equilibrium is realized in the market. Hence, in this case it does not matter whether one becomes a leader or a follower. We also establish that replacing a private firm by a public firm in the standard Bertrand-Edgeworth game with capacity constraints increases social welfare and that a pure-strategy equilibrium always exists

    Determining Atlantic Ocean province contrasts and variations

    The Atlantic Meridional Transect (AMT) series of twenty-five cruises over the past twenty years has produced a rich depth-resolved biogeochemical in situ data resource consisting of a wealth of core variables. These multiple core datasets, key to the operation of AMT, such as temperature, salinity, oxygen and inorganic nutrients, are often only used as ancillary measurements for contextualising hypothesis-driven process studies. In this paper these core in situ variables, alongside data drawn from satellite Earth Observation (EO) and modelling, have been analysed to determine characteristic oceanic province variations encountered over the last twenty years on the AMT through the Atlantic Ocean. The EO and modelling analysis shows the variations of key environmental variables in each province, such as surface currents, the net heat flux and subsequent large scale biological responses, such as primary production. The in situ core dataset analysis allows the variation in features such as the tropical oxygen minimum zone to be quantified as well as showing clear contrasts between the provinces in nutrient stoichiometry. Such observations and relationships can be used within basin scale biogeochemical models to set realistic variation ranges

    The effect of beta-alanine supplementation on neuromuscular fatigue in elderly (55–92 Years): a double-blind randomized study

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Ageing is associated with a significant reduction in skeletal muscle carnosine which has been linked with a reduction in the buffering capacity of muscle and in theory, may increase the rate of fatigue during exercise. Supplementing beta-alanine has been shown to significantly increase skeletal muscle carnosine. The purpose of this study, therefore, was to examine the effects of ninety days of beta-alanine supplementation on the physical working capacity at the fatigue threshold (PWC<sub>FT</sub>) in elderly men and women.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Using a double-blind placebo controlled design, twenty-six men (n = 9) and women (n = 17) (age ± SD = 72.8 ± 11.1 yrs) were randomly assigned to either beta-alanine (BA: 800 mg × 3 per day; n = 12; CarnoSyn™) or Placebo (PL; n = 14) group. Before (pre) and after (post) the supplementation period, participants performed a discontinuous cycle ergometry test to determine the PWC<sub>FT</sub>.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Significant increases in PWC<sub>FT </sub>(28.6%) from pre- to post-supplementation were found for the BA treatment group (p < 0.05), but no change was observed with PL treatment. These findings suggest that ninety days of BA supplementation may increase physical working capacity by delaying the onset of neuromuscular fatigue in elderly men and women.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>We suggest that BA supplementation, by improving intracellular pH control, improves muscle endurance in the elderly. This, we believe, could have importance in the prevention of falls, and the maintenance of health and independent living in elderly men and women.</p
