Detecting 6 MV X-rays using an organic photovoltaic device

    Get PDF
An organic photovoltaic (OPV) device has been used in conjunction with a flexible inorganic phosphor to produce a radiation tolerant, efficient and linear detector for 6 MV Xrays. The OPVs were based on a blend of poly(3-hexylthiophene-2,5-diyl) (P3HT) and phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM). We show that the devices have a sensitivity an order of magnitude higher than a commercial silicon detector used as a reference. Exposure to 360 Grays of radiation resulted in a small (2%) degradation in performance demonstrating that these detectors have the potential to be used as flexible, real-time, in vivo dosimeters for oncology treatments. Efficient Raman Sideband Generation in a Coherent Atomic Medium

    Get PDF
We demonstrate the efficient generation of Raman sidebands in a medium coherently prepared in a dark state by continuous-wave low-intensity laser radiation. Our experiment is performed in sodium vapor excited in Λ\Lambda configuration on the D1_{1} line by two laser fields of resonant frequencies ω1\omega_{1} and ω2\omega_{2}, and probed by a third field % \omega_{3}. First-order sidebands for frequencies ω1\omega_{1}, ω2\omega_{2} and up to the third-order sidebands for frequency ω3\omega_{3} are observed. The generation starts at a power as low as 10 microwatt for each input field. Dependencies of the intensities of both input and generated waves on the frequency difference (ω1ω2\omega_{1}-\omega_{2}), on the frequency ω3\omega_{3} and on the optical density are investigated.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figure

Insulin-like growth factor-1 induces hyperproliferation of PKD1 cystic cells via a Ras/Raf dependent signalling pathway

Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) largely results from mutations in the PKD1 gene leading to hyperproliferation of renal tubular epithelial cells and consequent cyst formation. Rodent models of PKD suggest that the multifunctional hormone insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) could play a pathogenic role in renal cyst formation. In order to test this possibility, conditionally immortalized renal epithelial cells were prepared from normal individuals and from ADPKD patients with known germline mutations in PKD1. All patient cell lines had a decreased or absence of polycystin-1 but not polycystin-2. These cells had an increased sensitivity to IGF-1 and to cyclic AMP, which required phosphatidylinositol-3 (PI3)-kinase and the mitogen-activated protein kinase, extracellular signal-regulated protein kinase (ERK) for enhanced growth. Inhibition of Ras or Raf abolished the stimulated cell proliferation. Our results suggest that haploinsufficiency of polycystin-1 lowers the activation threshold of the Ras/Raf signalling system leading to growth factor-induced hyperproliferation. Inhibition of Ras or Raf activity may be a therapeutic option for decreasing tubular cell proliferation in ADPKD

HIF-mediated innate immune responses: cell signaling and therapeutic implications

Leukocytes recruited to infected, damaged, or inflamed tissues during an immune response must adapt to oxygen levels much lower than those in the circulation. Hypoxia inducible factors (HIFs) are key mediators of cellular responses to hypoxia and, as in other cell types, HIFs are critical for the upregulation of glycolysis, which enables innate immune cells to produce adenosine triphosphate anaerobically. An increasing body of evidence demonstrates that hypoxia also regulates many other innate immunological functions, including cell migration, apoptosis, phagocytosis of pathogens, antigen presentation and production of cytokines, chemokines, and angiogenic and antimicrobial factors. Many of these functions are mediated by HIFs, which are not only stabilized posttranslationally by hypoxia, but also transcriptionally upregulated by inflammatory signals. Here, we review the role of HIFs in the responses of innate immune cells to hypoxia, both in vitro and in vivo, with a particular focus on myeloid cells, on which the majority of studies have so far been carried out

The inertial dynamics of thin film flow of non-Newtonian fluids

    Get PDF
Consider the flow of a thin layer of non-Newtonian fluid over a solid surface. I model the case of a viscosity that depends nonlinearly on the shear-rate; power law fluids are an important example, but the analysis here is for general nonlinear dependence. The modelling allows for large changes in film thickness provided the changes occur over a large enough lateral length scale. Modifying the surface boundary condition for tangential stress forms an accessible base for the analysis where flow with constant shear is a neutral critical mode, in addition to a mode representing conservation of fluid. Perturbatively removing the modification then constructs a model for the coupled dynamics of the fluid depth and the lateral momentum. For example, the results model the dynamics of gravity currents of non-Newtonian fluids even when the flow is not very slow

Anomalous Charge Dynamics in the Superconducting State of Underdoped Cuprates

We present fermi liquid expressions for the low temperature behavior of the superfluid stiffness, explain why they differ from those suggested recently by Lee and Wen, and discuss their applicability to data on high-TcT_c superconductors. We find that a consistent description requires a strong, doping dependent anisotropy, which affects states near the zone corners much more strongly than those near the zone diagonals

Sensitivity of Recalibrated Continuous Glucose Monitor Data

    Get PDF
Continuous glucose monitors (CGMs) are increasingly used in research settings to examine glucose metabolism in newborn babies. Accuracy of these devices depends on calibration blood glucose (BG) measurements entered into the CGM device. The potential impact of variations in timing and accuracy of reference calibration measurements on CGM device output were assessed
