    Get PDF
This presentation explores the development of a network focused on enhancing network leadership in tertiary education associations. The Network of Australasian Tertiary Associations (NATA) is an Office for Learning and Teaching (OLT) project that aims at facilitating a sustainable collaborative network between established higher education associations. NATA provides a space for discussion, action and advocacy on key issues pertinent to the Australasian tertiary environment. Members of NATA comprise Australasian Society for Computers in Learning in Tertiary Education (ascilite), Australasian Council on Open, Distance and e-learning (ACODE), The Higher Education Research and Development Society of Australasia, (HERDSA), The Council of Australian Directors of Academic Development, (CADAD), Open and Distance Learning Association of Australia (ODLAA), Australian Academic and Research Network (AARNet) and Netspot. Networks are important hubs for the development of new ideas and are discussion and dissemination spaces for individuals and communities. The project is now focused on progressing achieving the NATA's key objectives through three strategic activities. These comprise: ● Disseminating the ALTC Good Practice Reports through the development of asynchronous 'E' Resources, completed in partnership with report authors ● Conducting research into the network and network leadership through interviews, focus groups and surveys ● Supporting partner associations to engage in small-scale projects aligned with the key objectives of both the NATA and their association to provide value to the sector and strengthen communication and engagement of NATA partners. Through the creation of collaborative connected spaces for discourse and action, the NATA aspires to develop a model that will influence policy, research and learning and teaching in the Australasian tertiary environment

Matrix Recipes for Hard Thresholding Methods

In this paper, we present and analyze a new set of low-rank recovery algorithms for linear inverse problems within the class of hard thresholding methods. We provide strategies on how to set up these algorithms via basic ingredients for different configurations to achieve complexity vs. accuracy tradeoffs. Moreover, we study acceleration schemes via memory-based techniques and randomized, ϵ\epsilon-approximate matrix projections to decrease the computational costs in the recovery process. For most of the configurations, we present theoretical analysis that guarantees convergence under mild problem conditions. Simulation results demonstrate notable performance improvements as compared to state-of-the-art algorithms both in terms of reconstruction accuracy and computational complexity.Comment: 26 page

The paper describes vast urban habitats of Bidentetalia on muddy soils, above all the Ranunculo-Rumicetum maritimi SISS. 66 and related associations, with remarkably frequent occurrences of Rumex palustris, Rumex maritimus, Senecio congestus (Tephroseris palustris), Coronopus didymus, Galega officinalis and Conium maculatum. This vegetation and its contact communities are found on sandy material, wh ich were deposited, stored and sometimes planed in the course of road and other construction works. It is shown that associations and habitats of this kind are unintended and ignored side effects of usual urban production processes. They can neither be planned nor preserved. Therefore they cannot be the object of successful species or habitat conservation activities

Improving the Stability of Manganese-Substituted Cs(Pb/Mn)Br3 Inorganic Perovskite Quantum Dots Through Silica-Coating

    Get PDF
Inorganic perovskite quantum dots (IPQD) are semiconductor nanoparticles with high color tunability, making them optimal materials for optoelectronic devices. Current CsPbBr3 IPQDs have high quantum yields (QY) and broad absorption and emission profiles, but are limited in commercial implementation due to the toxicity of lead. This poster will discuss the synthesis of silica-coated manganese-substituted Cs(Pb/Mn)Br3 IPQDs. Replacing lead with manganese reduces the toxicity of the nanoparticles while maintaining the high QY, and the addition of a silica shell improves the stability of the IPQD. These modifications produce higher quality nanoparticles with broadened applications in optoelectronic devices.https://orb.binghamton.edu/research_days_posters_spring2020/1030/thumbnail.jp

A Low-cost Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) Payload for Cubesats and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs)

    Get PDF
The focus of this research has been the design and fabrication of a Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) payload configuration. This unique payload employs low-cost commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) hardware and equipment to assess photosynthetic activity and vegetation health through remote sensing on Cubesat or Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) platforms. The proposed NDVI imaging payload is comprised of three main subsystems: an electrical system, a software system, and a hardware system. The electrical system includes a custom designed printed circuit board (PCB), a single cell 3.7 V lithium-polymer battery, voltage regulator circuitry components, and wiring harnesses and connectors. The software system employs a master and slave system that communicates through general purpose input/output (GPIO) pin responses. Raspberry Pi Zero computer boards serve as the central processing units (CPUs) of the hardware subsystem, which also consists of the Pi-Cam standard red/green/blue (RGB) and Pi No-IR near-infrared (NIR) camera modules. A PCB was designed to be compatible with the Cubesat standard and lightweight component selections make it a desirable option for UAV flights. Open-source GIMP image processing software was used to analyze results from ground-based testing and flight testing on a UAV and general aviation (GA) aircraft at various altitudes to validate proof of concept. Raw NDVI and NDVI color map images were created from GIMP post-processing. Analysis of the results suggests that the angle of incidence of the sun with respect to the view angle of the imaging payload is a significant factor in the resulting NDVI values. Terrain also appeared to have an effect on the results where shadows were cast from the sun at low angles of incidence. Therefore, in the northern hemisphere it is recommended that image collection is performed roughly within the hours of 10 AM and 2 PM between the vernal and autumnal equinoxes to ensure a solar altitude of at least 35°. For best results, it has been verified that image data should be collected at the local time of maximum solar altitude for a particular date and location of interest (typically around noon). The information gather by this research can be used by scientists and technologist to potentially provide a means of enhancing their research and further developing technologies of UAV applications and space-based systems

Kleinschmielenrasen im Stadtgebiet : Entstehung und Bewertung am Beispiel von Osnabrück ; mit 2 Tabellen

    Get PDF
The paper describes several associations of the Thero-Airion on urban and industrial sites. They contain several spscies which are members of the so-caüed red lists of rare and endangered species. The stands developped during the last decade as unintended consequences ("side effects") of ordinary urban and industrialland uses and land use changes. The genesis of the stands is documented, and the causes of their formation and their temporary" stability are discussed. The empirical results are used to criticize the application of red lists to urban and industrial vegetation; finally, a basic principle for nature conservation in urban and industrial spaces is proposed
