Exponential Krylov time integration for modeling multi-frequency optical response with monochromatic sources
Light incident on a layer of scattering material such as a piece of sugar or
white paper forms a characteristic speckle pattern in transmission and
reflection. The information hidden in the correlations of the speckle pattern
with varying frequency, polarization and angle of the incident light can be
exploited for applications such as biomedical imaging and high-resolution
microscopy. Conventional computational models for multi-frequency optical
response involve multiple solution runs of Maxwell's equations with
monochromatic sources. Exponential Krylov subspace time solvers are promising
candidates for improving efficiency of such models, as single monochromatic
solution can be reused for the other frequencies without performing full
time-domain computations at each frequency. However, we show that the
straightforward implementation appears to have serious limitations. We further
propose alternative ways for efficient solution through Krylov subspace
methods. Our methods are based on two different splittings of the unknown
solution into different parts, each of which can be computed efficiently.
Experiments demonstrate a significant gain in computation time with respect to

Unlocking Cross-Divisional Sharing: A Multiple-Case Study of Vertical Collaboration in Independent Schools
Cross-divisional collaboration represents a specialized form of vertical sharing occurring when school personnel discuss issues of teaching and learning with their peers across traditional divisional boundaries (i.e., elementary, middle, and high school). Recent empirical evidence highlighted the benefits of cross-divisional collaboration, asserting the practice could deepen educatorsâ understandings of curricula, strengthen studentsâ overall academic bases, and even build respect between cross-divisional colleagues. Unfortunately, due to scheduling and physical site limitations, the previous works announcing cross-divisional collaborationâs potential relied on external interventions to facilitate peer interactions, leaving it largely unexplained how school leaders could implement and sustain this specific form of sharing. As flexible organizations frequently situating multiple divisions on a single campus site, K-12 independent schools offered an ideal arena for this study to build on the extant literature and examine the mechanisms and benefits of cross-divisional collaboration in their real-world contexts. Specifically, leveraging social capital theory and distributed leadership theory, this work carried out a multiple-case study involving formal and informal leaders at two independent schools identified as exemplars of cross-divisional practice. To begin addressing the recognized gap in the literature, this investigation collected interview, document, and field note data, to reveal how independent school leaders sustained cross-divisional collaboration. Due to a lack of existing research involving K-12 independent schools, this work also explored the perceived outcomes of cross-divisional practice within these unique educational organizations. Resulting from a cross-case synthesis between this studyâs two site schools, the findings supported addressing barriers, establishing a constructive culture, and investing in relationships as essential leadership activities related to the facilitation of cross-divisional collaboration. Furthermore, the participants in this work indicated their schoolâs cross-divisional practice led to deeper connection and meaningful improvement in their school communities. In addition to informing independent school practitioners, these results begin to address the previous gap in the literature and serve to inform future works
Neuromodulation via the Cerebrospinal Fluid: Insights from Recent in Vitro Studies
The cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) occupies the brainâs ventricles and subarachnoid space
and, together with the interstitial fluid (ISF), forms a continuous fluidic network that
bathes all cells of the central nervous system (CNS). As such, the CSF is well positioned
to actively distribute neuromodulators to neural circuits in vivo via volume transmission.
Recent in vitro experimental work in brain slices and neuronal cultures has shown that
human CSF indeed contains neuromodulators that strongly influence neuronal activity.
Here we briefly summarize these new findings and discuss their potential relevance to
neural circuits in health and disease
EGLN1 Inhibition and Rerouting of α-Ketoglutarate Suffice for Remote Ischemic Protection
Ischemic preconditioning is the phenomenon whereby brief periods of sublethal ischemia protect against a subsequent, more prolonged, ischemic insult. In remote ischemic preconditioning (RIPC), ischemia to one organ protects others organs at a distance. We created mouse models to ask if inhibition of the alpha-ketoglutarate (αKG)-dependent dioxygenase Egln1, which senses oxygen and regulates the hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF) transcription factor, could suffice to mediate local and remote ischemic preconditioning. Using somatic gene deletion and a pharmacological inhibitor, we found that inhibiting Egln1 systemically or in skeletal muscles protects mice against myocardial ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury. Parabiosis experiments confirmed that RIPC in this latter model was mediated by a secreted factor. Egln1 loss causes accumulation of circulating αKG, which drives hepatic production and secretion of kynurenic acid (KYNA) that is necessary and sufficient to mediate cardiac ischemic protection in this setting.Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard. Optical to near-infrared transit observations of super-Earth GJ1214b: water-world or mini-Neptune?
GJ1214b is thought to be either a mini-Neptune with a thick, hydrogen-rich
atmosphere, or a planet with a composition dominated by water. In the case of a
hydrogen-rich atmosphere, molecular absorption and scattering processes may
result in detectable radius variations as a function of wavelength. The aim of
this paper is to measure these variations. We have obtained observations of the
transit of GJ1214b in the r- and I-band with the INT, in the g, r, i and z
bands with the 2.2 meter MPI/ESO telescope, in the Ks-band with the NOT, and in
the Kc-band with the WHT. By comparing the transit depth between the the
different bands, which is a measure for the planet-to-star size ratio, the
atmosphere is investigated. We do not detect clearly significant variations in
the planet-to-star size ratio as function of wavelength. Although the ratio at
the shortest measured wavelength, in g-band, is 2sigma larger than in the other
bands. The uncertainties in the Ks and Kc bands are large, due to systematic
features in the light curves. The tentative increase in the planet-to-star size
ratio at the shortest wavelength could be a sign of an increase in the
effective planet-size due to Rayleigh scattering, which would require GJ1214b
to have a hydrogen-rich atmosphere. If true, then the atmosphere has to have
both clouds, to suppress planet-size variations at red optical wavelengths, as
well as a sub-solar metallicity, to suppress strong molecular features in the
near- and mid-infrared. However, star spots, which are known to be present on
the hoststar's surface, can (partly) cancel out the expected variations in
planet-to-star size ratio, due to the lower surface temperature of the spots .
A hypothetical spot-fraction of 10% would be able to raise the infrared points
sufficiently with respect to the optical measurements to be inconsistent with a

AMPA Receptor Activation Causes Silencing of AMPA Receptor-Mediated Synaptic Transmission in the Developing Hippocampus
Agonist-induced internalization of transmembrane receptors is a widespread biological phenomenon that also may serve as a mechanism for synaptic plasticity. Here we show that the agonist AMPA causes a depression of AMPA receptor (AMPAR) signaling at glutamate synapses in the CA1 region of the hippocampus in slices from developing, but not from mature, rats. This developmentally restricted agonist-induced synaptic depression is expressed as a total loss of AMPAR signaling, without affecting NMDA receptor (NMDAR) signaling, in a large proportion of the developing synapses, thus creating AMPAR silent synapses. The AMPA-induced AMPAR silencing is induced independently of activation of mGluRs and NMDARs, and it mimics and occludes stimulus-induced depression, suggesting that this latter form of synaptic plasticity is expressed as agonist-induced removal of AMPARs. Induction of long-term potentiation (LTP) rendered the developing synapses resistant to the AMPA-induced depression, indicating that LTP contributes to the maturation-related increased stability of these synapses. Prognostic value and kinetics of circulating endothelial cells in patients with recurrent glioblastoma randomised to bevacizumab plus lomustine, bevacizumab single agent or lomustine single agent. A report from the Dutch Neuro-Oncology Group BELOB trial
Background:Angiogenesis is crucial for glioblastoma growth, and anti-vascular endothelial growth factor agents are widely used in recurrent glioblastoma patients. The number of circulating endothelial cells (CECs) is a surrogate marker for endothelial damage. We assessed their kinetics and explored their prognostic value in patients with recurrent glioblastoma.Methods:In this side study of the BELOB trial, 141 patients with recurrent glioblastoma were randomised to receive single-agent bevacizumab or lomustine, or bevacizumab plus lomustine. Before treatment, after 4 weeks and after 6 weeks of treatment, CECs were enumerated.Results:The number of CECs increased during treatment with bevacizumab plus lomustine, but not during treatment in the single-agent arms. In patients treated with lomustine single agent, higher absolute CEC numbers after 4 weeks (log 10 CEC hazard ratio (HR) 0.41, 95% CI 0.18-0.91) and 6 weeks (log 10 CEC HR 0.16, 95% CI 0.05-0.56) of treatment were associated with improved overall survival (OS). Riding on the Coat-Tails of Traditional Cultural Expressions
Matters related to the protection of traditional cultural expressions (âTCEsâ) or expressions of folklore (âEoFsâ) are sensitive and intricate as a blend of legal, economic, philosophical and anthropological considerations jostle to capture their core features. This results in disparate views surrounding what should qualify as TCEs or EoFs, who should be considered their âownerâ (assuming that ownership per se is conceptually compatible with these items), which is the most appropriate legal protection regime and how broad their scope of protection should be. Drawing from these various accounts on TCEs, this article focuses on the interaction between TCEs and EoFs originating on the European continent and the European Union (âEUâ) trade mark legislation. Specifically, this article examines whether the limitations of the effects of trade mark rights and of the absolute grounds of refusal, as developed by the case law of the Court of Justice of the European Union, are effective in preserving the cohesion of TCEs. This article advances the thesis that registration of TCEs and EoFs as trade marks generates an imbalance between the rights of the trade mark owner and the defences available to others under the EU trade mark law framework. Furthermore, such an imbalance is likely to hinder the unfettered circulation of TCEs and undermine their original meaning. Lastly, in some cases, trade mark registration of TCEs contributes to their appropriation and misappropriation. The article concludes that, de lege ferenda, the direct exclusion of TCEs as eligible subject matter for trade mark registration is preferable to seeking a post factum remedy
