GROWTH on S190814bv: Deep Synoptic Limits on the Optical/Near-infrared Counterpart to a Neutron Star-Black Hole Merger

On 2019 August 14, the Advanced LIGO and Virgo interferometers detected the high-significance gravitational wave (GW) signal S190814bv. The GW data indicated that the event resulted from a neutron star-black hole (NSBH) merger, or potentially a low-mass binary BH merger. Due to the low false-alarm rate and the precise localization (23 deg2 at 90%), S190814bv presented the community with the best opportunity yet to directly observe an optical/near-infrared counterpart to an NSBH merger. To search for potential counterparts, the GROWTH Collaboration performed real-time image subtraction on six nights of public Dark Energy Camera images acquired in the 3 weeks following the merger, covering >98% of the localization probability. Using a worldwide network of follow-up facilities, we systematically undertook spectroscopy and imaging of optical counterpart candidates. Combining these data with a photometric redshift catalog, we ruled out each candidate as the counterpart to S190814bv and placed deep, uniform limits on the optical emission associated with S190814bv. For the nearest consistent GW distance, radiative transfer simulations of NSBH mergers constrain the ejecta mass of S190814bv to be M ej < 0.04 M o˙ at polar viewing angles, or M ej < 0.03 M o˙ if the opacity is κ < 2 cm2g-1. Assuming a tidal deformability for the NS at the high end of the range compatible with GW170817 results, our limits would constrain the BH spin component aligned with the orbital momentum to be χ < 0.7 for mass ratios Q < 6, with weaker constraints for more compact NSs. © 2020. Prepared by the Spring 2001 Preservation Planning class. This Historic Preservation Plan contains the developmental history of the town of Gay, identifies the town’s historic resources and provides recommendations for the preservation of those valuable properties after they are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The purpose of this preservation plan is to provide recommendations for the city on historic designations, and preservation guidelines for the maintenance and rehabilitation of historic buildings. The importance of community involvement is also emphasized, as well as the vital role strategies for community education play in the success of a preservation plan.https://scholarworks.gsu.edu/history_heritagepreservation/1016/thumbnail.jp

Prepared by the Fall 1998 Conservation of Historic Building Materials class. This Historic Structure Report contains a historical overview for the Old Campbell County Courthouse, an exterior and interior architectural description, a conditions assessment of the interior and exterior of the structure, an accessibility assessment and preservation recommendations for all of those areas. The purpose of this report is to provide a current assessment of the condition of the property, recommendations for needed repairs and options for future consideration.https://scholarworks.gsu.edu/history_heritagepreservation/1008/thumbnail.jp

Social Determinants of Health and Retention in HIV Care Among Recently Incarcerated Women Living with HIV in Canada

Women living with HIV (WLWH) are over-represented in corrections in Canada, yet little is known about women’s experiences post-release. We used CHIWOS cross-sectional data from WLWH to estimate associations between social determinants of health and HIV-related care outcomes among WLWH with recent (within past year) or ever (before past year) incarceration experience. Lifetime incarceration prevalence was 36.9% (6.5% recent; 30.4% ever), with significant differences by province of residence (British Columbia: 10% recent; 52% ever; Ontario: 5%; 24%; Quebec: 6%; 22%; p < 0.001). In adjusted multinomial logistic regression analyses, compared with never incarcerated, recent incarceration was associated with Indigenous ancestry, lower annual income (< $20,000 CAD), unstable housing, current sex work, injection drug use (IDU), and sub-optimal antiretroviral therapy (ART) adherence, while ever incarceration was associated with current sex work, IDU, and experiencing adulthood violence. Our findings have implications regarding supports needed by WLWH in the post-release period, including ART adherence and achieving health and social goals
