    Demonstratives, definite descriptions and non-redundancy

    Get PDF
In some sentences, demonstratives can be substituted with definite descriptions without any change in meaning. In light of this, many have maintained that demonstratives are just a type of definite description. However, several theorists have drawn attention to a range of cases where definite descriptions are acceptable, but their demonstrative counterparts are not. Some have tried to account for this data by appealing to presupposition. I argue that such presuppositional approaches are problematic, and present a pragmatic account of the target contrasts. On this approach, demonstratives take two arguments and generally require that the first, covert argument is non-redundant with respect to the second, overt argument. I derive this condition through an economy principle discussed by Schlenker (2005)

Zonal flow generation in ion temperature gradient mode turbulence

In the present work the zonal flow (ZF) growth rate in toroidal ion-temperature-gradient (ITG) mode turbulence including the effects of elongation is studied analytically. The scaling of the ZF growth with plasma parameters is examined for typical tokamak parameter values. The physical model used for the toroidal ITG driven mode is based on the ion continuity and ion temperature equations whereas the ZF evolution is described by the vorticity equation. The results indicate that a large ZF growth is found close to marginal stability and for peaked density profiles and these effects may be enhanced by elongation.Comment: 20 pages, 5 figure

Objective:It is aimed to medicolegal evaluation of risk factors and to discuss in the light of literature, depending on sociodemographic data, causes of violence and physical/mental pathologies in women who were sent to the Forensic Medicine outpatient clinic with the claim of being subjected to partner violence. Methods:The data of female cases sent between 01.01.2018 and 31.12.2020 were retrospectively scanned in terms of sociodemographic data, degree of physical violence and mental illnesses related to violence. It was evaluated using the SPSS package program. Results:The mean age of 143 female cases was 35.8±10.7, women with low educational and economic level and unemployed were exposed to more physical violence by their partners, 88.1% were exposed to physical violence, 54.5% were injured in the facial region. Bone fractures were detected in 16.4%, and severe mental illness developed in 45.9%. In addition, it was determined that the risk of suicide attempt was high in cases who were exposed to violence for many years and were diagnosed with a violence-related mental illness. Conclusion:It has been observed that low education and economic level, unemployment constitute a higher risk group for women to be subjected to physical violence by their partners. We believe that, together with the urgent legal regulations to prevent violence, the development of projects to increase the education level of women, create jobs and gain economic freedom will provide significant contributions and benefits to the prevention of violence

During its natural life cycle, budding yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) has to adapt to drastically changing environments, but how environmental-sensing pathways are linked to adaptive gene expression changes remains incompletely understood. Here, we des

Targeted support is needed to protect the wellbeing of researchers working with emotionally challenging material

This project, funded by the ESRC IAA, focused on the lived experiences of PhD and early career researchers who are routinely exposed to emotionally challenging material. It investigated existing wellbeing resources and piloted counsellor-led training workshops and peer-support networks to test whether this intervention could act as a low-cost but high-gain wellbeing tool. Though carried out at the University of Bristol, findings are applicable to all research organisations seeking to improve wellbeing and reduce talent loss and staff absences

Crystallization and preliminary X-ray diffraction studies of FHA domains of Dun1 and Rad53 protein kinases

    Get PDF
Forkhead-associated (FHA) domains are modular protein–protein interaction domains of ~130 amino acids present in numerous signalling proteins. FHA-domain-dependent protein interactions are regulated by phosphorylation of target proteins and FHA domains may be multifunctional phosphopeptide-recognition modules. FHA domains of the budding yeast cell-cycle checkpoint protein kinases Dun1p and Rad53p have been crystallized. Crystals of the Dun1-FHA domain exhibit the symmetry of the space group P6122 or P6522, with unit-cell parameters a = b = 127.3, c = 386.3 Å; diffraction data have been collected to 3.1 Å resolution on a synchrotron source. Crystals of the N-terminal FHA domain (FHA1) of Rad53p diffract to 4.0 Å resolution on a laboratory X-ray source and have Laue-group symmetry 4/mmm, with unit-cell parameters a = b = 61.7, c = 104.3 Å

Genetic aberrations detected by comparative genomic hybridisation in vulvar cancers

    Get PDF
Squamous cell carcinoma of the vulva is a disease of significant clinical importance, which arises in the presence or absence of human papillomavirus. We used comparative genomic hybridisation to document non-random chromosomal gains and losses within human papillomavirus positive and negative vulvar cancers. Gain of 3q was significantly more common in human papillomavirus-positive cancers compared to human papillomavirus-negative cancers. The smallest area of gain was 3q22–25, a chromosome region which is frequently gained in other human papillomavirus-related cancers. Chromosome 8q was more commonly gained in human papillomavirus-negative compared to human papillomavirus-positive cancers. 8q21 was the smallest region of gain, which has been identified in other, non-human papillomavirus-related cancers. Chromosome arms 3p and 11q were lost in both categories of vulvar cancer. This study has demonstrated chromosome locations important in the development of vulvar squamous cell carcinoma. Additionally, taken together with previous studies of human papillomavirus-positive cancers of other anogenital sites, the data indicate that one or more oncogenes important in the development and progression of human papillomavirus-induced carcinomas are located on 3q. The different genetic changes seen in human papillomavirus-positive and negative vulvar squamous cell carcinomas support the clinicopathological data indicating that these are different cancer types
