    Grazing Alfalfa: Producer Perspective

    Get PDF
Scott County native Robert (Bob) Hall, Jr. is a man of many hats. He and his wife Bonnie have embarked on many ventures on their farm including sheep, hogs and tobacco. Hall was born and raised on the farm outside of Georgetown, where he currently resides and operates a stocker operation. Some may recognize Hall for the feed mill he purchased in the 1960’s known as Hallway Feeds. Early in the Mill’s history over 90 percent of their sales were to dairy producers. Now 95 percent of company’s sales go to the equine industry. Hallway Feed is sold and distributed to racetracks around the globe. Hallway Feed has fed a total of 18 Kentucky Derby winners over the years, including the 2015 Triple Crown Winner, American Pharaoh

    Lupines, A New Crop

    Get PDF
Lupines are relatively new in the United States but are an ancient cultivated legume grain in other parts of the world. Lupines have been cultivated for over 3,000 years in the Mediterranean and in the highland regions of South America. The most important lupine species include both white and blue lupines. For many years, most varieties of these species were “bitter lupines” which contained alkaloids toxic to livestock. In 1935, German plant breeders developed varieties which were low in alkaloid content and are referred to as “sweet lupines”

2003 Winter Wheat Crop Performance Results

    Get PDF
Yields in 2003 were very good across most of South Dakota and an improvement over 2002. Moisture levels at most locations were at least adequate in the spring and early summer with favorable cool temperatures in June for crop growth. Central South Dakota suffered moisture stress as shown by low yields and test weights at Pierre, Tripp County, and Hayes (Table 1 and 2). Statewide, the average winter wheat yield (Crop Performance Testing Program) was 56 bu/A in 2003, or 17 bu/A better than in 2002. The better performing varieties in 2003 were Jagalene, Millennium, Wahoo, Expedition, and Wesley

2004 Winter Wheat Variety Yield Results and Production Tips

Winter wheat yields in South Dakota were a study in contrasts in 2004. The statewide average yield in the Crop Performance Testing Program was 59 bu/A, which was similar to last year’s average. However this does not reflect the fact that many locations in the western half of the state were not harvested. Extremely dry conditions in West River in the fall of 2003 caused poor emergence, and the continuing lack of moisture through spring left much of the wheat in poor condition. Testing locations at Martin, Oelrichs, Hayes, and Kennebec were abandoned because of poor stands and drought stress. Bison wheat was killed by freezing (20o F) temperatures in mid May

The Passive Journalist: How sources dominate the local news

    Get PDF
This study explores which sources are “making” local news and whether these sources are simply indicating the type of news that appears, or are shaping newspaper coverage. It provides an empirical record of the extent to which sources are able to dominate news coverage from which future trends in local journalism can be measured. The type and number of sources used in 2979 sampled news stories in four West Yorkshire papers, representing the three main proprietors of local newspapers in the United Kingdom, were recorded for one month and revealed the relatively narrow range of routine sources; 76 per cent of articles cited only a single source. The analysis indicates that journalists are relying less on their readers for news, and that stories of little consequence are being elevated to significant positions, or are filling news pages at the expense of more important stories. Additionally, the reliance on a single source means that alternative views and perspectives relevant to the readership are being overlooked. Journalists are becoming more passive, mere processors of one-sided information or bland copy dictated by sources. These trends indicate poor journalistic standards and may be exacerbating declining local newspaper sales

Inhibitory Deficits, Delay Aversion and Preschool AD/HD: Implications for the Dual Pathway Model

    Get PDF
The dual pathway model proposes the existence of separate and neurobiologically distinct cognitive (inhibitory and more general executive dysfunction) and motivational (delay aversion) developmental routes to AD/HD. The study reported in this paper explores the relation between inhibitory deficits and delay aversion and their association with AD/HD in a group of three-year-old children. Children identified as having a pre-school equivalent of AD/HD (N=19) and controls (N=19), matched for gender and IQ, completed a battery of inhibition and delay tasks. Correlational and factor analysis supported a dissociation between inhibitory deficits (go-no-go, set shifting) and delay aversion (choice delay) with delay of gratification cross-loading. Children with AD/HD displayed more inhibitory deficits and were more delay averse than controls. The data support the value of the distinction between motivational and cognitive pathways to AD/HD. Furthermore, the data suggest that such a distinction is apparent relatively early on during development

Correlation of Pool Drowning Deaths with Number of Residential Swimming Pools by County in Florida, 2005-2007

    Get PDF
Drowning in residential swimming pools is a significant public health problem in Florida. This study aimed to determine the relationship between the number of pools and pool drowning deaths by county in Florida. County property appraisers’ offices were surveyed to obtain a statewide census of appraised residential pools. The number of pool drowning deaths was obtained from death certificate records. Approximately 1.1 million residential pools were appraised in 2006, and 262 unintentional, confirmed pool drowning deaths occurred from 2005 through 2007. Statistical modeling showed that for every 10,000 residential pools that a county has, 2.4 additional pool drowning deaths can be expected to occur over three years. This relationship was therefore determined to be linearly correlated. Greater public health impact may be achieved by focusing drowning prevention efforts, especially among young children, in counties with more residential pools, and thus a greater risk of pool drowning
