NASA\u27s Meteorological Programs - Beyond the First Five Years
The requirements or objectives for a meteorological satellite program and the application of the data obtained from these satellites to the problem of weather forecasting and meteorological research is related to the existing NASA flight program. The results of the ten meteorological satellites, nine TIROS and one Nimbus launched during the past five years, are summarized. The status of the flight program for the next twelve months is discussed and details are given on the future meteorological program which has been developed to meet the objectives initially outlined.
Included in the presentation are the Weather Bureau funded TIROS Operational Satellite System, Nimbus G, B, and D, as well as TIROS K and the meteorological experiments on the Applications Technology Satellites
Population and Needs Assessment of Migraineurs Treated by Reading Health System
Introduction: Migraine headaches are a common chronic condition that contributes to a significant amount of disability and economic burden. Through this study, we aim to identify the patient population that is using the Emergency Department (ED) for chronic migraine (CM) treatment within the Reading Health System (RHS).
Research Methods: We conducted congruent and retrospective chart reviews of men, women, and children of all ages presenting to the ED with a severe headache between July 2017 to February 2018. All subjects were asked the same set of standard questions by a single interviewer in person or via telephone.
Results: A total of 92 patients who presented to the RHS ED were surveyed. Of the 92 patients interviewed, 68 patients were found to be either chronic according to the HIS classifications or by identifying themselves as chronic migraine sufferers. Of the 68 CM patients, 19/68 were on a prophylaxis medication, 20/68 do not have a care provider who treats their migraines and 47/68 reported to have either anxiety, depression or bipolar disorder.
Conclusion: This interview-style study explored why headache patients go to the ED, which therapies are failing, and how our current system of headache treatment affects their daily life. We found that patients with CM make up the majority of headache visits at the RHS ED. The CM population of the RHS are underserved and undertreated and the lack of access to appropriate care is likely contributing to unnecessary ED visits
Taking the bait: Species taking oral rabies vaccine baits intended for raccoons
Raccoon rabies in eastern USA is managed by strategically distributing oral rabies vaccine (ORV) baits. The attractiveness, palativity, density, and non-target species bait take affect ORV effectiveness. We examined raccoon and non-target species differences in investigating/removing fish-meal polymer and coated sachet baits applied to simulate two aerial bait distribution densities. Bait densities of 150 baits/km2 and 75 baits/km2 were evaluated, respectively, in zones expected to have high and low
Racc oon densities. Three primary non-target species visited baits: coyotes, white-tailed deer, and feral swine. The proportion of bait stations visited by raccoons during 1 week observation periods ranged from 50 to 70%, exceeding non-target species visitation. Raccoon take rates for visited baits averaged from 59 to 100%. Raccoon visitation was similar for both bait densities, indicating a proportionally greater quantity of baits were taken in the higher bait density zone. Coyote visitation rates ranged from
16 to 26%, with take rates for visited baits between 46 and 100%. Coyotes were expected to take baits intended for raccoons, because similar baits are applied to vaccinate coyotes. Deer regularly investigated but rarely took baits. Feral swine were in low abundance in the high bait density zone (higher human density) and visited ≤ 1% of baits there but visited baits at frequencies similar to coyotes and deer in the low-density zone and were likely to take encountered baits (63–100%). Non-target bait consumption could be a concern in some circumstances for achieving sufficient raccoon sero-conversion rates

Crossover from hydrodynamic to acoustic drag on quartz tuning forks in normal and superfluid 4He
We present measurements of the drag forces on quartz tuning forks oscillating at low velocities in normal and superfluid 4He. We have investigated the dissipative drag over a wide range of frequencies, from 6.5 to 600 kHz, by using arrays of forks with varying prong lengths and by exciting the forks in their fundamental and first overtone modes. At low frequencies the behavior is dominated by laminar hydrodynamic drag, governed by the fluid viscosity. At higher frequencies acoustic drag is dominant and is described well by a three-dimensional model of sound emission
