The purpose of this study was to analyze graduate theses carried out in the field of pre-school science education in Turkey to reveal general tendency in this field. For this purpose, the database of Council of Higher Education (CHE) National Thesis Center was used to determine theses. As a result of the screening, a total of 86 graduate theses including 67 master's theses and 19 doctoral dissertations conducted between the years of 1994 and 2018 were included in to the study. The theses were examined through descriptive content analysis by a data collection tool called the theses classification form. The data obtained in the form were transferred to Microsoft Excel and the descriptive statistics were presented as graphs, percentage, and frequency tables. According to the results, it was found that more studies are needed in the field of pre-school science education. Based on findings, recommendations were made

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to ev aluate indications, effectiv eness and safety of laparoscopically assisted v aginal hysterectomy f or benign adnexal or uterine pathologies. STUDY DESIGN: We rev iewed the records of 35 consecutive women who underwent laparoscopically assisted v aginal hysterectomy f or benign reasons between January 2002 and December 2004. All the patients were not suitable candidates for abdominal or vaginal hysterectomy either because of concomitant adnexal masses or lack of uterine prolapse. The exclusion criteria included prolapse, uterine or adnexal neoplasm, pelv ic inflammation, vaginal stenosis and any pathology with a uterine size of more than 14 weeks. RESULTS: Indications for laparoscopically assisted v aginal hysterectomy were leiomyoma uteri (45.7%), intractable uterine bleeding (17.1%), myoma uteri with adnexal masses (14.3%), postmenopausal (8.6%) or bilateral (8.6%) adnexal masses and tamoxifen related endometrial pathology (5.7%). Mean operating time was 149.31 minutes (range 90-210) and the mean postoperative hospital stay was 2.4 days (range 2-10). Only one bladder laceration occurred during the operations which required conv ersion to laparotomy (2.8%). CONCLUSION: Laparoscopically assisted vaginal hysterectomy was f ound as a f easible and safe approach in the surgical management of a selected group of patients with benign pathologies

Development of chemistry education research (CER) in Turkey: A comparison of CER papers with international research

    No full text
Chemistry education research (CER) ranges from understanding the history and philosophy of chemistry, which guides on us how chemistry knowledge was developed, to the developments and application of modern technologies and tools for a more effective teaching of chemistry. CER plays a mediator role in translating recent discoveries in the field of chemistry into content that can be understood by students. Like in many academic disciplines, it is necessary for chemistry educators to pause periodically and take stock of what kind of research we are doing and where chemistry education is going. A content analysis of research papers can guide scholars with a strong indication of the extent to which journal editors and scholars prioritize research in the chemistry education field and whether there have been changes in the subject matters studied and research methods employed over time. This chapter focuses on the development of research in chemistry education in Turkey through a content analysis of 1338 research papers published in peer-reviewed journals and compares it to international research published in high status journals that publish CER. It starts with a brief introduction to the Turkish education system and teaching chemistry as a discipline in Turkey. Attention then moves to the research in chemistry education in the world and Turkey. Content analyses of CER papers published by Turkish chemistry educators are compared with CER published by highly respected international journals. The results indicated that although CER has showed a visible increase in Turkey since 2000 and the number of national and international publications is increased, there are still problems with publishing high quality research papers in respected international journals. The chapter concludes with a discussion on the status and future of CER in Turkey. © Springer Science+Business Media Singapore 2016

Prophylactic drainage of the peritoneal cavity after obstetrical and gynecological surgery is widely practiced. The idea of “when in doubt, drain” is accepted and applied clinically by many surgeons. However, surgically placed drains are not without risk. The present case describes herniation of fallopian tube during the removal of a surgical drain placed after a cesarean section
