The study of marine plankton data is vital to monitor the health of the world’s oceans. In recent decades, automatic plankton recognition systems have proved useful to address the vast amount of data collected by specially engineered in situ digital imaging systems. At the beginning, these systems were developed and put into operation using traditional automatic classification techniques, which were fed with handdesigned local image descriptors (such as Fourier features), obtaining quite successful results. In the past few years, there have been many advances in the computer vision community with the rebirth of neural networks. In this paper, we leverage how descriptors computed using Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) trained with out-of-domain data are useful to replace hand-designed descriptors in the task of estimating the prevalence of each plankton class in a water sample. To achieve this goal, we have designed a broad set of experiments that show how effective these deep features are when working in combination with state-of-the-art quantification algorithms

AbstractIntroductionSince several years ago, music has been used as a therapeutic and preventive tool in neonatology. A great number of research papers have been written on the subject; however, this technique is rarely used in Mexico.ObjectiveTo improve the condition of neonates at Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICU) and their relatives, in order to minimize any stress and collateral damage.Material and methods: A group of two neonatologists, 3 residents, 10 nurses and a professional concert violinist, conducted six weekly music sessions in the Outpatient Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (ONICU) of our institution. During the concert, we individually assessed each newborn, recording vital signs through electronic monitoring; additionally, we recorded the mood of any other family members present.ResultsDuring the music sessions, the neonatal patients showed no significant changes in vital signs; yet, ONICU staff and the parents/relatives of hospitalized newborns showed beneficial effects, reporting decreased stress and high levels of satisfaction.ConclusionsMusic can have a positive effect as adjunctive therapy in high-risk newborns, especially in premature babies. We therefore recommend applying this methodology in the ONICU

Non-communicating hydrocephalus from pork tapeworm obstructing the foramina of Monro and its endoscopic management; a case report from Europe

Introduction: Taenia solium is the main causative agent of neurocysticercosis. The tapeworm can manifest inside the ventricles, usually in the form of intracranial hypertension. We present a case of hydrocephalus as a result of a neurocysticercosis lesion obstructing both foramina of Monro. Research question: A comprehensive review of the management is provided, as well as video footage (an invaluable resource to compare, critique and learn with other institutions). Material and methods: A 23-year-old female from Honduras presented with a 7-day complaint of headache. On exam, she was hyperreflexic, but otherwise normal. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed a non-specific lesion at the level of the foramina of Monro, with associated hydrocephalus. Additional testing was normal. Results: The patient underwent an endoscopic ventriculoscopy with partial excision of the lesion and subsequent implantation of a ventriculoperitoneal shunt. On postoperative MRI, hydrocephalus resolved and pathological analysis identified the parasite as Taenia solium. Albendazole was administered for 14 days. Discussion and conclusion: Neurocysticercosis should be considered in patients presenting with hydrocephalus, especially those from endemic areas. The long-term prognosis of ventricular neurocysticercosis might be favourable, provided that adequate care is given timely. Endoscopic surgery seems to be effective for the removal of parasitic lesions. However, studies comparing open versus endoscopic surgery are lacking. The majority of cases in the literature correspond to America and Asia. This case shows that neurocysticercosis is also present in Europe, and that a high index of suspicion is necessar

Effect of Oak Chip Addition at Different Winemaking Stages on Phenolic Composition of Moravia Agria Red Wines

This study compared changes in the phenolic composition of Moravia Agria wine and its effect on colour,co-pigmentation as well as on physicochemical properties, such as antioxidant capacity, caused by addingoak chips at different stages of the winemaking process. Moravia Agria control wine was made followingtraditional winemaking processes, without oak chips. Oak chips were added to the rest of the wines attwo dose rates (3 and 6 g/L) at different stages of the winemaking process: for one week during alcoholicfermentation, during malolactic fermentation and in young red Moravia Agria wine. Only slight significantdifferences were found in phenolic composition, antioxidant activity and chromatic characteristics betweenthe Moravia Agria wines treated with oak chips and the control wine. However, oak chip addition slightlydecreased the content of non-polymeric red pigments (monomeric anthocyanins and pyranoanthocyanins)and also of resveratrol-monomer stilbenes. It is suggested that oak chip addition to Moravia Agria winescan be selected as part of the targeted sensory profile (relative intensity of sensory descriptors providedby grape and oak wood), since only a few changes have been observed in the phenolic profiles, antioxidantcapacity value and colour characteristics

Cómo adaptar un modelo de aprendizaje profundo a un nuevo dominio: el caso de la extracción de relaciones biomédicas

In this article, we study the relation extraction problem from Natural Language Processing (NLP) implementing a domain adaptation setting without external resources. We trained a Deep Learning (DL) model for Relation Extraction (RE), which extracts semantic relations in the biomedical domain. However, can the model be applied to different domains? The model should be adaptable to automatically extract relationships across different domains using the DL network. Completely training DL models in a short time is impractical because the models should quickly adapt to different datasets in several domains without delay. Therefore, adaptation is crucial for intelligent systems, where changing factors and unanticipated perturbations are common. In this study, we present a detailed analysis of the problem, as well as preliminary experimentation, results, and their evaluation.

Aims. We present and study the spectroscopic and photometric evolution of the type Ia supernova (SN Ia) 2010ev. Methods. We obtain and analyze multi-band optical light curves and optical-near-infrared spectroscopy at low and medium resolution spanning from -7 days to +300 days from the B-band maximum. Results. A photometric analysis shows that SN 2010ev is a SN Ia of normal brightness with a light curve shape of Δm15(B)=1.12±0.02\Delta m_{15}(B)=1.12 \pm 0.02 and a stretch s = 0.94±0.010.94 \pm 0.01 suffering significant reddening. From photometric and spectroscopic analysis, we deduce a color excess of E(BV)=0.25±0.05E(B - V) = 0.25 \pm 0.05 and a reddening law of Rv=1.54±0.65R_v = 1.54 \pm 0.65. Spectroscopically, SN 2010ev belongs to the broad-line SN Ia group, showing stronger than average Si II {\lambda}6355 absorption features. We also find that SN 2010ev is a high-velocity gradient SN, with a value of 164±7164 \pm 7 km s1^{-1} d1^{-1}. The photometric and spectral comparison with other supernovae shows that SN 2010ev has similar colors and velocities to SN 2002bo and SN 2002dj. The analysis of the nebular spectra indicates that the [Fe II] {\lambda}7155 and [Ni II] {\lambda}7378 lines are redshifted, as expected for a high velocity gradient supernova. All these common intrinsic and extrinsic properties of the high velocity gradient (HVG) group are different from the low velocity gradient (LVG) normal SN Ia population and suggest significant variety in SN Ia explosions.Comment: 16 pages, 13 figures, 7 tables.
