    Sol-derived Hydroxyapatite Ddip-coating of a Porous Ti6Al4V Powder Compact

    A sintered porous Ti6Al4V powder compact with a mean pore size of 63 µm and an average porosity of 37±1% was dip-coated at soaking times varying between 1- and 5-minute using a sol-derived calcium Hydrooxyapatite (HA) powder. The coated compacts were heat-treated at 840 oC. The coating thickness was found to increase with increasing soaking time, from 1.87 µm at 1-minute soaking to 9 µm at 5-minute soaking on the average. It was shown that at increasing soaking times, the originally open pores started to close, while at low soaking times the Ti6Al4V particles were partially coated. The coating layer was shown to be nano porous and the depth of coating was observed to be relatively shallow: only few particles near the compact surface were HA-coated

The increased use of dialect by black authors, particularly children\u27s authors, was a sign that the nature of the black experience as they wanted to convey it did not have to rely on traditional forms, and literary devices; that they could treat familiar, realistic ideas and situations using a familiar dialect and relate that idea more effectively

    In vitro synergistic cytoreductive effects of zoledronic acid and radiation on breast cancer cells

    INTRODUCTION: Bisphosphonates are mostly used in the treatment of bone metastases. They have been shown to act synergistically with other chemotherapeutic agents. It is not known, however, whether similar synergistic effects exist with radiation on breast cancer cells. METHODS: Human MCF-7 breast cancer cells were treated with up to 100 μM zoledronic acid, were irradiated with up to 800 cGy or were exposed to combinations of both treatments to determine the antiproliferative effects of zoledronic acid and radiation. RESULTS: Zoledronic acid and radiation caused a dose-dependent and time-dependent decrease in cell viability (approximate 50% growth inhibition values were 48 μM and 20 μM for 24 hours and 72 hours, respectively, for zoledronic acid and 500 cGy for radiation). A synergistic cytotoxic effect of the combination of zoledronic acid and radiation was confirmed by isobologram analysis. CONCLUSION: These data constitute the first in vitro evidence for synergistic effects between zoledronic acid and radiation. This combination therapy might thus be expected to be more effective than either treatment alone in patients with metastatic breast carcinoma

    The AQUA-FONTIS study: protocol of a multidisciplinary, cross-sectional and prospective longitudinal study for developing standardized diagnostics and classification of non-thyroidal illness syndrome

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Non-thyroidal illness syndrome (NTIS) is a characteristic functional constellation of thyrotropic feedback control that frequently occurs in critically ill patients. Although this condition is associated with significantly increased morbidity and mortality, there is still controversy on whether NTIS is caused by artefacts, is a form of beneficial adaptation, or is a disorder requiring treatment. Trials investigating substitution therapy of NTIS revealed contradictory results. The comparison of heterogeneous patient cohorts may be the cause for those inconsistencies.</p> <p>Objectives</p> <p>Primary objective of this study is the identification and differentiation of different functional states of thyrotropic feedback control in order to define relevant evaluation criteria for the prognosis of affected patients. Furthermore, we intend to assess the significance of an innovative physiological index approach (SPINA) in differential diagnosis between NTIS and latent (so-called "sub-clinical") thyrotoxicosis.</p> <p>Secondary objective is observation of variables that quantify distinct components of NTIS in the context of independent predictors of evolution, survival or pathophysiological condition and influencing or disturbing factors like medication.</p> <p>Design</p> <p>The <b>a</b>pproach to a <b>qua</b>ntitative <b>f</b>ollow-up <b>o</b>f <b>n</b>on-<b>t</b>hyroidal <b>i</b>llness <b>s</b>yndrome (AQUA FONTIS study) is designed as both a cross-sectional and prospective longitudinal observation trial in critically ill patients. Patients are observed in at least two evaluation points with consecutive assessments of thyroid status, physiological and clinical data in additional weekly observations up to discharge. A second part of the study investigates the neuropsychological impact of NTIS and medium-term outcomes.</p> <p>The study design incorporates a two-module structure that covers a reduced protocol in form of an observation trial before patients give informed consent.     Crushing of aluminium closed cell foams. Density and strain rate effects

    The quasi-static and high strain rate compression behavior of an Al closed cell foam was examined in detail. The compression flow stress of the foam was a function of the relative density but exhibits little or no strain rate density. In addition to the flow stress, the energy absorption was also related to the foam density by a similar power law dependency.
