HP1 reshapes nucleosome core to promote phase separation of heterochromatin
Heterochromatin affects genome function at many levels. It enables heritable gene repression, maintains chromosome integrity and provides mechanical rigidity to the nucleus1,2. These diverse functions are proposed to arise in part from compaction of the underlying chromatin2. A major type of heterochromatin contains at its core the complex formed between HP1 proteins and chromatin that is methylated on histone H3, lysine 9 (H3K9me). HP1 is proposed to use oligomerization to compact chromatin into phase-separated condensates3-6. Yet, how HP1-mediated phase separation relates to chromatin compaction remains unclear. Here we show that chromatin compaction by the Schizosaccharomyces pombe HP1 protein Swi6 results in phase-separated liquid condensates. Unexpectedly, we find that Swi6 substantially increases the accessibility and dynamics of buried histone residues within a nucleosome. Restraining these dynamics impairs compaction of chromatin into liquid droplets by Swi6. Our results indicate that Swi6 couples its oligomerization to the phase separation of chromatin by a counterintuitive mechanism, namely the dynamic exposure of buried nucleosomal regions. We propose that such reshaping of the octamer core by Swi6 increases opportunities for multivalent interactions between nucleosomes, thereby promoting phase separation. This mechanism may more generally drive chromatin organization beyond heterochromatin
Certifying reality of projections
Computational tools in numerical algebraic geometry can be used to
numerically approximate solutions to a system of polynomial equations. If the
system is well-constrained (i.e., square), Newton's method is locally
quadratically convergent near each nonsingular solution. In such cases, Smale's
alpha theory can be used to certify that a given point is in the quadratic
convergence basin of some solution. This was extended to certifiably determine
the reality of the corresponding solution when the polynomial system is real.
Using the theory of Newton-invariant sets, we certifiably decide the reality of
projections of solutions. We apply this method to certifiably count the number
of real and totally real tritangent planes for instances of curves of genus 4.Comment: 9 page
The controversy in the process: potential scattering or resonance ?
The reaction shows a broad peak at 1.5
GeV in the channel which has no counterpart in the
channel. This "resonance" is considered as a candidate for a
state in the "s-channel". We show, however, that it can also
be explained by potential scattering of via the -
exchange in the "t-channel".Comment: 12 pages, latex, 3 postscript figures, to appear in Zeitschrift fur

General Form of the Color Potential Produced by Color Charges of the Quark
Constant electric charge satisfies the continuity equation where is the current density of the electron.
However, the Yang-Mills color current density of the quark
satisfies the equation which is not a continuity
equation () which implies that a color charge
of the quark is not constant but it is time dependent where
are color indices. In this paper we derive general form of color
potential produced by color charges of the quark. We find that the general form
of the color potential produced by the color charges of the quark at rest is
given by \Phi^a(x) =A_0^a(t,{\bf x}) =\frac{q^b(t-\frac{r}{c})}{r}\[\frac{{\rm
exp}[g\int dr \frac{Q(t-\frac{r}{c})}{r}] -1}{g \int dr
\frac{Q(t-\frac{r}{c})}{r}}\]_{ab} where integration is an indefinite
integration, ~~ , ~~, ~~ is the retarded time, ~~ is the speed
of light, ~~ is the position of the quark at the retarded
time and the repeated color indices (=1,2,...8) are summed. For constant
color charge we reproduce the Coulomb-like potential
which is consistent with the Maxwell theory where
constant electric charge produces the Coulomb potential

Control of microwave signals using circuit nano-electromechanics
Waveguide resonators are crucial elements in sensitive astrophysical
detectors [1] and circuit quantum electrodynamics (cQED) [2]. Coupled to
artificial atoms in the form of superconducting qubits [3, 4], they now provide
a technologically promising and scalable platform for quantum information
processing tasks [2, 5-8]. Coupling these circuits, in situ, to other quantum
systems, such as molecules [9, 10], spin ensembles [11, 12], quantum dots [13]
or mechanical oscillators [14, 15] has been explored to realize hybrid systems
with extended functionality. Here, we couple a superconducting coplanar
waveguide resonator to a nano-coshmechanical oscillator, and demonstrate
all-microwave field controlled slowing, advancing and switching of microwave
signals. This is enabled by utilizing electromechanically induced transparency
[16-18], an effect analogous to electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT)
in atomic physics [19]. The exquisite temporal control gained over this
phenomenon provides a route towards realizing advanced protocols for storage of
both classical and quantum microwave signals [20-22], extending the toolbox of
control techniques of the microwave field.Comment: 9 figure
Analyticity, Unitarity and One-loop Graviton Corrections to Compton Scattering
We compute spin-flip cross section for graviton photoproduction on a spin-1/2
target of finite mass. Using this tree-level result, we find one-loop graviton
correction to the spin-flip low-energy forward Compton scattering amplitude by
using Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn sum rule. We show that this result agrees with the
corresponding perturbative computations, implying the validity of the sum rule
at one-loop level, contrary to the previous claims. We discuss possible effects
from the black hole production and string Regge trajectory exchange at very
high energies. These effects seem to soften the UV divergence present at
one-loop graviton level. Finally, we discuss the relation of these observations
with the models that involve extra dimensions.Comment: 15 pages, 3 figure
Chiral Generations on Intersecting 5-branes in Heterotic String Theory
We show that there exist two 27 and one 27 bar of E6, net one D=4, N=1 chiral
matter supermultiplet as zero modes localized on the intersection of two
5-branes in the E8 x E8 heterotic string theory. The smeared intersecting
5-brane solution is used via the standard embedding to construct a heterotic
background, which provides, after a compactification of some of the transverse
dimensions, a five-dimensional Randall-Sundrum II like brane-world set-up in
heterotic string theory. As a by-product, we present a new proof of anomaly
cancellation between those from the chiral matter and the anomaly inflow onto
the brane without small instanton.Comment: 26 pages, 5 figures; references added, typo correcte
Spin-Nematic Squeezed Vacuum in a Quantum Gas
Using squeezed states it is possible to surpass the standard quantum limit of
measurement uncertainty by reducing the measurement uncertainty of one property
at the expense of another complementary property. Squeezed states were first
demonstrated in optical fields and later with ensembles of pseudo spin-1/2
atoms using non-linear atom-light interactions. Recently, collisional
interactions in ultracold atomic gases have been used to generate a large
degree of quadrature spin squeezing in two-component Bose condensates. For
pseudo spin-1/2 systems, the complementary properties are the different
components of the total spin vector , which fully characterize the state on
an SU(2) Bloch sphere. Here, we measure squeezing in a spin-1 Bose condensate,
an SU(3) system, which requires measurement of the rank-2 nematic or quadrupole
tensor as well to fully characterize the state. Following a quench
through a nematic to ferromagnetic quantum phase transition, squeezing is
observed in the variance of the quadratures up to -8.3(-0.7 +0.6) dB
(-10.3(-0.9 +0.7) dB corrected for detection noise) below the standard quantum
limit. This spin-nematic squeezing is observed for negligible occupation of the
squeezed modes and is analogous to optical two-mode vacuum squeezing. This work
has potential applications to continuous variable quantum information and
quantum-enhanced magnetometry
How Mistimed and Unwanted Pregnancies Affect Timing of Antenatal Care Initiation in three Districts in Tanzania
Early antenatal care (ANC) initiation is a doorway to early detection and management of potential complications associated with pregnancy. Although the literature reports various factors associated with ANC initiation such as parity and age, pregnancy intentions is yet to be recognized as a possible predictor of timing of ANC initiation. Data originate from a cross-sectional household survey on health behaviour and service utilization patterns. The survey was conducted in 2011 in Rufiji, Kilombero and Ulanga districts in Tanzania on 910 women of reproductive age who had given birth in the past two years. ANC initiation was considered to be early only if it occurred in the first trimester of pregnancy gestation. A recently completed pregnancy was defined as mistimed if a woman wanted it later, and if she did not want it at all the pregnancy was termed as unwanted. Chisquare was used to test for associations and multinomial logistic regression was conducted to examine how mistimed and unwanted pregnancies affect timing of ANC initiation. Although 49.3% of the women intended to become pregnant, 50.7% (34.9% mistimed and 15.8% unwanted) became pregnant unintentionally. While ANC initiation in the 1st trimester was 18.5%, so was 71.7% and 9.9% in the 2nd and 3rd trimesters respectively. Multivariate analysis revealed that ANC initiation in the 2nd trimester was 1.68 (95% CI 1.10‒2.58) and 2.00 (95% CI 1.05‒3.82) times more likely for mistimed and unwanted pregnancies respectively compared to intended pregnancies. These estimates rose to 2.81 (95% CI 1.41‒5.59) and 4.10 (95% CI 1.68‒10.00) respectively in the 3rd trimester. We controlled for gravidity, age, education, household wealth, marital status, religion, district of residence and travel time to a health facility. Late ANC initiation is a significant maternal and child health consequence of mistimed and unwanted pregnancies in Tanzania. Women should be empowered to delay or avoid pregnancies whenever they need to do so. Appropriate counseling to women, especially those who happen to conceive unintentionally is needed to minimize the possibility of delaying ANC initiation.\u
