Comparing the Effect of Rational and Emotional Appeals on Donation Behavior
We present evidence from a pre-registered experiment indicating that a philosophical argument––a type of rational appeal––can persuade people to make charitable donations. The rational appeal we used follows Singer’s well-known “shallow pond” argument (1972), while incorporating an evolutionary debunking argument (Paxton, Ungar, & Greene 2012) against favoring nearby victims over distant ones. The effectiveness of this rational appeal did not differ significantly from that of a well-tested emotional appeal involving an image of a single child in need (Small, Loewenstein, and Slovic 2007). This is a surprising result, given evidence that emotions are the primary drivers of moral action, a view that has been very influential in the work of development organizations. We did not find support for our pre-registered hypothesis that combining our rational and emotional appeals would have a significantly stronger effect than either appeal in isolation. However, our finding that both kinds of appeal can increase charitable donations is cause for optimism, especially concerning the potential efficacy of well-designed rational appeals. We consider the significance of these findings for moral psychology, ethics, and the work of organizations aiming to alleviate severe poverty
Investigating the Relationship Between Negative Selection into Online Schooling and Achievement Growth
Program evaluations that measure the effects of online charter schools on student achievement will be biased if they fail to account for unobserved differences between online students and students in the comparison group. There are theoretical and empirical reasons to believe that students who enroll in online schools disproportionately face challenges that are not accounted for in administrative data. This paper investigates some of the negative factors that motivate parents to enroll in online schools. We combine data from an online charter school survey—that asked why parents decided to enroll in online schooling—with three years of achievement and demographic data. We find that students whose parents indicated they selected online schools for negative reasons made statistically significantly lower ELA gains, even after controlling for prior achievement, race, gender, free lunch status, and special education status. We conclude that other observational analyses of online charter schools, such as CREDO (2015), will be biased and unreliable if they fail to properly control for reasons students select those schools
Radio Properties of Low Redshift Broad Line Active Galactic Nuclei
The question as to whether the distribution of radio-loudness in active
galactic nuclei (AGN) is actually bimodal has been discussed extensively in the
literature. Futhermore, there have been claims that radio-loudness depends on
black hole mass and Eddington ratio. We investigate these claims using the low
redshift broad line AGN sample of Greene & Ho (2007), which consists of 8434
objects at z < 0.35 from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Fourth Data Release (SDSS
DR4). We obtained radio fluxes from the Very Large Array Faint Images of the
Radio Sky at Twenty-Centimeters (FIRST) survey for the SDSS AGN. Out of the
8434 SDSS AGN, 821 have corresponding observed radio fluxes in the FIRST
survey. We calculated the radio-loudness parameter (R) for all objects above
the FIRST detection limit (1 mJy), and an upper limit to R for the undetected
objects. Using these data, the question of radio bimodality is investigated for
different subsets of the total sample. We find no clear demarcation between the
radio-loud (RL, R > 10) and radio-quiet (RQ, R < 10) objects, but instead fill
in a more radio-intermediate population in a continuous fashion for all
subsamples. We find that 4.7% of the AGN in the flux-limited subsample are RL
based on core radio emission alone. We calculate the radio-loud fraction (RLF)
as both a function of black hole mass and Eddington ratio. The RLF decreases
(from 13% to 2%) as Eddington ratio increases over 2.5 order of magnitude. The
RLF is nearly constant (~5%) over 4 decades in black hole mass, except for an
increase at masses greater than 10^8 solar masses. We find for the FIRST
detected subsample that 367 of the RL AGN have black hole masses less than 10^8
solar masses, a large enough number to indicate that RL AGN are not a product
of only the most massive black holes in the local universe.Comment: 28 pages, 14 figures, accepted to A
System Engineering for J-2X Development: The Simpler, the Better
The Ares I and Ares V Vehicles will utilize the J-2X rocket engine developed for NASA by the Pratt and Whitney Rocketdyne Company (PWR) as the upper stage engine (USE). The J-2X is an improved higher power version of the original J-2 engine used for Apollo. System Engineering (SE) facilitates direct and open discussions of issues and problems. This simple idea is often overlooked in large, complex engineering development programs. Definition and distribution of requirements from the engine level to the component level is controlled by Allocation Reports which breaks down numerical design objectives (weight, reliability, etc.) into quanta goals for each component area. Linked databases of design and verification requirements help eliminate redundancy and potential mistakes inherent in separated systems. Another tool, the Architecture Design Description (ADD), is used to control J-2X system architecture and effectively communicate configuration changes to those involved in the design process. But the proof of an effective process is in successful program accomplishment. SE is the methodology being used to meet the challenge of completing J-2X engine certification 2 years ahead of any engine program ever developed at PWR. This paper describes the simple, better SE tools and techniques used to achieve this success

School choice is on the rise in many states. Since the start of the new millennium, many states have launched or expanded private school choice options, permitted and expanded independently operated public charter schools, eased restrictions on homeschooling, and enacted policies that allow and encourage various forms of public school choice. One thing that is not on the rise, unfortunately, is average student scores on the National Assessment of Education Progress (NAEP). Student performance on the assessments, typically called “The Nation’s Report Card,” were flat from 2001 until 2015 and have dropped slightly in both 2017 and 2019
The Value of College Athletics in the Labor Market: Results from a Resume Audit Field Experiment
Employers may favor applicants who played college sports if athletics participation contributes to leadership, conscientiousness, discipline, and other traits that are desirable for labor-market productivity. We conduct a resume audit to estimate the causal effect of listing collegiate athletics on employer callbacks and test for subgroup effects by ethnicity, gender, and sport type. We applied to more than 450 jobs on a large, well-known job board. For each job listing we submitted two fictitious resumes, one of which was randomly assigned to include collegiate varsity athletics. Overall, listing a college sport does not produce a statistically significant change in the likelihood of receiving a callback or interview request. However, among non-white applicants, athletes are 3.2 percentage points less likely to receive an interview request (p = .04) relative to non-athletes. We find no statistically significant differences among males or females
