    A Distributed Calculus for Role-Based Access Control

    Role-based access control (RBAC) is increasingly attracting attention because it reduces the complexity and cost of security administration by interposing the notion of role in the assignment of permissions to users. In this paper, we present a formal framework relying on an extension of the π calculus to study the behavior of concurrent systems in a RBAC scenario. We define a type system ensuring that the specified policy is respected during computations, and a bisimulation to equate systems. The theory is then applied to three meaningful examples, namely finding the ‘minimal’ policy to run a given system, refining a system to be run under a given policy (whenever possible), and minimizing the number of users in a given system without changing the overall behavior

Starting from recent developments we realized a non invasive modification to the cryostat that completely eliminated vibrations, thermalizing the helium coming from the main bath at the pot temperature.     Information Requirements Analysis: A Qualitative Characterization of the Flightline Expediter for the Integrated Maintenance Information System

    The Integrated Maintenance Information System (IMIS) concept design includes the addition of management tools to access IMIS databases and provide communication capabilities between flightline technicians and supervisors. Armstrong Laboratory has developed a portable maintenance aid for technicians, and sponsored this research to investigate the requirements for a computer based tool for the expediter, The basic hardware and software requirements document for IMIS, the System/Segment Specification (SSS), contains task information that closely corresponds to the expediter job description as defined in Air Combat Command Instruction 21-166. This research compiled a list of information requirements for the expediter from the IMIS SSS and analyzed the resulting information using subjective evaluation and theoretical foundations in linguistics. The results support the notion that the expediter is often an intermediary to maintenance information. The recommendations focused on freeing the expediter to do more important tasks by reengineering the information flow in IMIS, which could result in significant workload reductions for the expediter with proper design of the information processes in an IMIS context

    Abstract Two TeO 2 crystal bolometers of 1.3 kg each, the largest single crystals ever operated with this technique, have been successfully realized and tested below 10 mK, in a dilution refrigerator located deep underground in the Gran Sasso National Laboratories. The calibration spectrum, obtained using an external 232Th Îł -ray source, shows an energy resolution of 3–4 keV FWHM from 0.5 to 2.6 MeV, for both detectors. In the α region, a 4.3 keV FWHM resolution has been observed on the 5407 keV peak due to the α decay of 210Po, a natural contaminant of TeO 2 crystals

    Chromosomal and extrachromosomal transmission of cellular melanization in the Freckled phenotype in Drosophila melanogaster.

    Freckled (Frd) is a dominant mutant of D. melanogaster, lethal in double dose, which manifests itself by melanization in the adult stage, while nothing can be noticed in the larva and/or in the pupa. Its localization has been determined at nearly 102 of the second chromosome.Among the offspring from backcrosses involving Frd, some individuals that do not carry the Frd gene exhibit a weak Frd manifestation in the adult stage, or a stronger one, mostly lethal, in the larval or pupal stage. Weak Frd, indicated as [Frd], is transmitted indefinitely without any recognizable linkage with the chromosomes, although its frequency is influenced by the 1st and, probably, by the 3rd chromosome. No matroclinous transmission has been found. It is concluded that [Frd] is probably controlled by an extrachromosomal entity, not located in the cytoplasm. The possible relationships between Frd and [Frd] are discussed

    Antennal Phenotype of Triatoma dimidiata Populations and Its Relationship with Species of phyllosoma and protracta Complexes

    Triatoma dimidiata (Latreille 1811) Reduviidae Triatominae is the main vector of Chagas disease in several countries of Latin America. As for other vector species, the characterization of T. dimidiata subpopulations within particular geographical regions or occupying different habitats could help in better planning of vector control actions. A Þrst objective in this study was to evaluate the antennal phenotype as a phenetic marker to characterize populations of T. dimidiata collected in different geographic areas and domestic and sylvatic habitats. A second objective was to evaluate the phenetic relationships of T. dimidiata with other species of the phyllosoma complex: longipennis, pallidipennis, and phyllosoma. The antennal sensilla of T. dimidiata specimens collected in Mexico, Central America, and Colombia were analyzed and compared with the antennal sensilla of T. longipennis, T. pallidipennis, and T. phyllosoma. T. barberi was used as an outgroup in the analysis. For each specimen, the ventral side of the three distal segments of the antennae was drawn, identifying and counting four types of sensilla. In T. dimidiata, univariate and multivariate analysis showed differences between sexes, among populations collected in different habitats within the same region, and among populations collected in different geographic regions. Two types of antennal sensilla showed a latitudinal variation. Domestic specimens showed intermediate characteristics of the antennal phenotype, between sylvatic cave- and sylvatic forest-collected specimens. The antennal phenotypes show high similarities among T. pallidipennis, T. phyllosoma, and T. longipennis, with a better differentiation of T. pallidipennis. T. dimidiata is separated from the other members of the complex by a similar distance to T. barberi, of the protracta complex.Fil: Catala, Silvia Susana.     A criterion for separating process calculi

    We introduce a new criterion, replacement freeness, to discern the relative expressiveness of process calculi. Intuitively, a calculus is strongly replacement free if replacing, within an enclosing context, a process that cannot perform any visible action by an arbitrary process never inhibits the capability of the resulting process to perform a visible action. We prove that there exists no compositional and interaction sensitive encoding of a not strongly replacement free calculus into any strongly replacement free one. We then define a weaker version of replacement freeness, by only considering replacement of closed processes, and prove that, if we additionally require the encoding to preserve name independence, it is not even possible to encode a non replacement free calculus into a weakly replacement free one. As a consequence of our encodability results, we get that many calculi equipped with priority are not replacement free and hence are not encodable into mainstream calculi like CCS and pi-calculus, that instead are strongly replacement free. We also prove that variants of pi-calculus with match among names, pattern matching or polyadic synchronization are only weakly replacement free, hence they are separated both from process calculi with priority and from mainstream calculi.Comment: In Proceedings EXPRESS'10, arXiv:1011.601

    In densely populated areas, urban and industrial activities are responsible for groundwater quality deterioration due to point sources contamination (Kuroda and Fukushi, 2008). In the Province of Milan (Northern Italy), the available water-quality data indicate the occurrence of high PCE+TCE and chromium concentrations in the unconfined shallow as well as in the confined deep aquifers. To cope with this problem, statistical methods can represent reliable tools to provide key information for groundwater management and protection
