The Broiler-Corn Ratio: Is it an Indicator of Fattened Broiler Profits?
As consumers eat healthier and obesity concerns increase, the poultry industry continues growth in sales and revenues. Data reflect ten years of broiler prices, exports, egg and chick production, cold storage stocks, company earnings and stock price. Expected results suggest a broiler-corn ratio is an indicator of company profits.Livestock Production/Industries,
A Comparative Assessment of the Broiler:Corn Ratio and Its Impact on Broiler Processors' Profitability
Input prices for broiler production, particularly corn, are becoming increasingly volatile due to increasing competition for corn from ethanol and biofuels production suggesting volatility in poultry profits will follow indicator of profits relating feed input prices and broiler meat output prices, such as a Broiler:corn ratios. Total chicken exports, total chicken ready-to-cook production, number of eggs set, number of chicks placed, and cold storage chicken inventory are used to estimate. Utilizing a distributed lag model, seventeen years of data for three Broiler:corn ratios, broiler exports, egg set, chick placements, cold storage stocks, and ready-to-cook broiler production were utilized to estimate stock share price for four major broiler producers.Demand and Price Analysis, Livestock Production/Industries,

Quantifying Device Usefulness -- How Useful is an Obsolete Device?
Obsolete devices add to the rising levels of electronic waste, a major
environmental concern, and a contributing factor to climate change. In recent
years, device manufacturers have established environmental commitments and
launched initiatives such as supporting the recycling of obsolete devices by
making more ways available for consumers to safely dispose of their old
devices. However, little support is available for individuals who want to
continue using legacy or 'end-of-life' devices and few studies have explored
the usefulness of these older devices, the barriers to their continued use and
the associated user experiences. With a human-computer interaction lens, this
paper reflects on device usefulness as a function of utility and usability, and
on the barriers to continued device use and app installation. Additionally, the
paper contributes insights from a sequel study that extends on prior work
evaluating app functionality of a 'vintage' Apple device with new empirical
data on app downloadability and functionality for the same device when newly
classified as 'obsolete'. A total of 230 apps, comprising the top 10 free App
Store apps for each of 23 categories, were assessed for downloadability and
functionality on an Apple iPad Mini tablet. Although only 20 apps (8.7%) could
be downloaded directly onto the newly obsolete device, 143 apps (62.2%) could
be downloaded with the use of a different non-legacy device. Of these 163
downloadable apps, 131 apps (com-prising 57% of all 230 apps and 80.4% of the
downloadable apps) successfully installed, opened, and functioned. This was a
decrease of only 4.3% in functional apps (of the 230 total apps) compared to
the performance of the device when previously classified as 'vintage'.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures, 1 tabl
Next Generation Respiratory Viral Vaccine System: Advanced and Emerging Bioengineered Human Lung Epithelia Model (HLEM) Organoid Technology
Acute respiratory infections, including pneumonia and influenza, are the S t" leading cause of United States and worldwide deaths. Newly emerging pathogens signaled the need for an advanced generation of vaccine technology.. Human bronchial-tracheal epithelial tissue was bioengineered to detect, identify, host and study the pathogenesis of acute respiratory viral disease. The 3-dimensional (3D) human lung epithelio-mesechymal tissue-like assemblies (HLEM TLAs) share characteristics with human respiratory epithelium: tight junctions, desmosomes, microvilli, functional markers villin, keratins and production of tissue mucin. Respiratory Syntial Virus (RSV) studies demonstrate viral growth kinetics and membrane bound glycoproteins up to day 20 post infection in the human lung-orgainoid infected cell system. Peak replication of RSV occurred on day 10 at 7 log10 particles forming units per ml/day. HLEM is an advanced virus vaccine model and biosentinel system for emergent viral infectious diseases to support DoD global surveillance and military readiness
High quality InP-on-Si for solar cell applications
InP on Si solar cells combine the low-cost and high-strength of Si with the high efficiency and radiation tolerance of InP. The main obstacle in the growth of single crystal InP-on-Si is the high residual strain and high dislocation density of the heteroepitaxial InP films. The dislocations result from the large differences in lattice constant and thermal expansion mismatch of InP and Si. Adjusting the size and geometry of the growth area is one possible method of addressing this problem. In this work, we conducted a material quality study of liquid phase epitaxy overgrowth layers on selective area InP grown by a proprietary vapor phase epitaxy technique on Si. The relationship between growth area and dislocation density was quantified using etch pit density measurements. Material quality of the InP on Si improved both with reduced growth area and increased aspect ratio (length/width) of the selective area. Areas with etch pit density as low as 1.6 x 10(exp 4) sq cm were obtained. Assuming dislocation density is an order of magnitude greater than etch pit density, solar cells made with this material could achieve the maximum theoretical efficiency of 23% at AMO. Etch pit density dependence on the orientation of the selective areas on the substrate was also studied

Identifying inequities in maternal and child health through risk stratification to inform health systems strengthening in Northern Togo
ObjectiveIn Togo, substantial progress in maternal and child health is needed to reach global development goals. To better inform clinic and community-based health services, this study identifies factors associated with maternal and child health care utilization in the Kara region of Northern Togo.
Methods We conducted a population-representative household survey of four health clinic catchment areas of 1,075 women of reproductive age in 2015. Multivariable logistic regression was used to model individual and structural factors associated with utilization of four maternal and child health services. Key outcomes were: facility-based delivery, maternal postnatal health check by a health professional within the first six weeks of birth, childhood vaccination, and receipt of malaria medication for febrile children under age five within 72 hours of symptom onset.
Results 83 percent of women who gave birth in the last 2 years delivered at a health facility. In adjusted models, the strongest predictor of facility delivery in the rural catchment areas was proximity to a health center, with women living under three kilometers having 3.7 (95% CI 1.7, 7.9) times the odds of a facility birth. Only 11 percent of women received a health check by a health provider at any time in the postnatal period. Postnatal health checks were less likely for women in the poorest households and for women who resided in rural areas. Children of polygamous mothers had half the odds of receiving malaria medication for fever within 72 hours of symptom onset, while children with increased household wealth status had increased odds of childhood vaccination and receiving treatment for malaria.
Conclusion Our analysis highlights the importance of risk stratification analysis to inform the delivery and scope of maternal and child health programs needed to reach those with the least access to care
A community-based approach to trials of aerobic exercise in aging and Alzheimer’s disease
The benefits of exercise for aging have received considerable attention in both the popular and academic press. The putative benefits of exercise for maximizing cognitive function and supporting brain health have great potential for combating Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Aerobic exercise offers a low-cost, low-risk intervention that is widely available and may have disease modifying effects. Demonstrating aerobic exercise alters the AD process would have enormous public health implications. The purpose of this paper is to a report the protocol of a current, community-based pilot study of aerobic exercise for AD to guide future investigation. This manuscript provides 1) an overview of possible benefits of exercise in those with dementia, 2) a rationale and recommendations for implementation of a community-based approach, 3) recommendation for implementation of similar study protocols, 4) unique challenges in conducting an exercise trial in AD
