    Maximum power, ecological function and efficiency of an irreversible Carnot cycle. A cost and effectiveness optimization

    In this work we include, for the Carnot cycle, irreversibilities of linear finite rate of heat transferences between the heat engine and its reservoirs, heat leak between the reservoirs and internal dissipations of the working fluid. A first optimization of the power output, the efficiency and ecological function of an irreversible Carnot cycle, with respect to: internal temperature ratio, time ratio for the heat exchange and the allocation ratio of the heat exchangers; is performed. For the second and third optimizations, the optimum values for the time ratio and internal temperature ratio are substituted into the equation of power and, then, the optimizations with respect to the cost and effectiveness ratio of the heat exchangers are performed.     Superconducting/magnetic three state nanodevice for memory and reading applications

    We present a simple nanodevice that can operate in two modes: i) three-state memory and ii) reading device. The nanodevice is fabricated with an array of ordered triangular-shaped nanomagnets embedded in a superconducting thin film. The input signal is ac current and the output signal is dc voltage. Vortex ratchet effect in combination with out of plane magnetic anisotropy of the nanomagnets is the background physics which governs the nanodevice performance.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figure

    Assessing the Democratic Effects of Groundwater User Associations in Mexico: The Case of Guanajuato

    The Mexican water polity underwent a deep process of Neo-liberal Statetransformation, oriented at modifying the relationship between the State and society and through the implementation of a range of State-strategies. These Statestrategies produced a number of drawback and contradictions. One of such strategies was the establishment and institutional development of multi-stakeholder platforms for groundwater resources management (MSPs), a form of socio-political governance arrangement allegedly created to enable a more democratic social participation and stakeholder cooperation throughout the water resources management process. As a result of a ‘critical juncture’ two models of MSPs were established, one supported by the central-State and another by the state-level authorities in the state of Guanajuato. They had important differences in that the latter represented a more serious attempt to truly enable a socio-political governance arrangement. Today, regardless of the initiative, these MSPs remain extremely weak and their contribution to a more participatory, cooperative and democratic groundwater governance is very limited. The central hypothesis of the thesis is that the principle factor –the culprit– behind these drawbacks and limitations is the State, but that still the MSPs for groundwater governance have generated some form of ‘countervailing power’ –an opportunity inherent to these governance arrangements–that supports some small, but important democratic effects. Through the integration of a ‘heuristic-analytical’ device supported by various theoretical developments –including governance and democratic studies, but mainly underpinned by a Historical Institutionalist approach–, this thesis analyses different critical aspects of this phenomenon. Accordingly, this device is structured in six different moments of analysis that focus on different aspects of the process of Neoliberal State transformation and the institutional development of the MSPs. The device ultimately seeks to develop and understanding of the prospects and challenges of the MSPs, assess their democratic performance, and investigate the role of the State in the process –including the reasons or factors that determine this role

    Carbon-fiber tips for scanning probe microscopes and molecular electronics experiments

    We fabricate and characterize carbon-fiber tips for their use in combined scanning tunneling and force microscopy based on piezoelectric quartz tuning fork force sensors. An electrochemical fabrication procedure to etch the tips is used to yield reproducible sub-100-nm apex. We also study electron transport through single-molecule junctions formed by a single octanethiol molecule bonded by the thiol anchoring group to a gold electrode and linked to a carbon tip by the methyl group.     This is an open-access article distributed under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution License, which permits unrestricted use, distribution, and reproduction in any medium, provided the original author and source are credited.Human umbilical cord blood (hUCB) has been proposed to contain not only haematopoietic stem cells, but also a rare pluripotent embryonic-like stem cell (ELSc) population that is negative for hematopoietic markers (Lin(-)CD45(-)) and expresses markers typical of pluripotent cells. The aim of this work was to isolate, characterise and expand this ELSc fraction from hUCB, as it may provide a valuable cell source for regenerative medicine applications. We found that we could indeed isolate a Lin(-)CD45(-) population of small cells (3-10 µm diameter) with a high nucleus to cytoplasm ratio that expressed the stem cell markers CD34 and CXCR4. However, in contrast to some previous reports, this fraction was not positive for CD133. Furthermore, although these cells expressed transcripts typical of pluripotent cells, such as SOX2, OCT3/4, and NANOG, they were not able to proliferate in any of the culture media known to support stem cell growth that we tested. Further analysis of the Lin(-)CD45(-) population by flow cytometry showed the presence of a Lin(-)CD45(-)Nestin(+) population that were also positive for CD34 (20%) but negative for CXCR4. These data suggest that the Lin(-)CD45(-) stem cell fraction present in the cord blood represents a small heterogeneous population with phenotypic characteristics of stem cells, including a Lin(-)CD45(-)Nestin(+) population not previously described. This study also suggests that heterogeneity within the Lin(-)CD45(-) cell fraction is the likely explanation for differences in the hUCB cell populations described by different groups that were isolated using different methods. These populations have been widely called "embryonic-like stem cell" on the basis of their phenotypical similarity to embryonic stem cells.
