    Anti-de Sitter wormhole kink

    Get PDF
The metric describing a given finite sector of a four-dimensional asymptotically anti-de Sitter wormhole can be transformed into the metric of the time constant sections of a Tangherlini black hole in a five-dimensional anti-de Sitter spacetime when one allows light cones to tip over on the hypersurfaces according to the conservation laws of an one-kink. The resulting kinked metric can be maximally extended, giving then rise to an instantonic structure on the euclidean continuation of both the Tangherlini time and the radial coordinate. In the semiclassical regime, this kink is related to the existence of closed timelike curves.Comment: 10 pages, to appear in IJMP

    A dark energy multiverse

    Get PDF
We present cosmic solutions corresponding to universes filled with dark and phantom energy, all having a negative cosmological constant. All such solutions contain infinite singularities, successively and equally distributed along time, which can be either big bang/crunchs or big rips singularities. Classicaly these solutions can be regarded as associated with multiverse scenarios, being those corresponding to phantom energy that may describe the current accelerating universe

Extending the Globus Information Service with the Common Information Model

This is a post-peer-review, pre-copyedit version. The final authenticated version is available online at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1109/ISPA.2011.62[Abstract] The need of task-adapted and complete information for the management of resources is a well known issue in Grid computing. Globus Toolkit 4 (GT4) includes the Monitoring and Discovery System component (MDS4) to carry out resource management. The Common Information Model (CIM) provides a standard conceptual view of the managed environment. This work improves the MDS4 functionality through the use of CIM, with the aim of providing a unified, standard representation of the Grid resources. Since a practical CIM model may contain a large volume of information, a new Index Service that represents the CIM information through Java instances is presented. In addition, a solution that keeps data in persistent storage has also been implemented. The evaluation of the proposed solutions achieves encouraging results, with an important reduction in memory consumption, a good scalability when the number of instances increases, and with a reasonable response time.

AbstractWood density, shrinkage, hygroscopicity and fibre saturation point were studied in young trees corresponding to three important species in the spanish timber production (Pinus pinaster, Pinus sylvestris and Pinus radiata). Twenty-nine thinned pines from different stands of Galicia (northwestern Spain) were sampled. The test material was small size defect-free specimens. The wood of Pinus pinaster exhibited intermediate density and more instability in dimensions, due to environmental moisture changes, than wood of Pinus radiata and Pinus sylvestris. These woods were light and relatively stable, especially Pinus radiata. The density in Pinus pinaster was similar to that obtained in previous studies on adult trees. Pinus radiata and Pinus sylvestris showed lower density than adult trees. The shrinkage properties were similar in the analyzed young wood and in the wood of adult trees, excepting the wood sampled for Pinus radiata, more stable than adult wood. Even with a sample of trees from the same stand in a specific site, there were significant differences in wood density among positions in each tree and among trees

    Nonorientable spacetime tunneling

Misner space is generalized to have the nonorientable topology of a Klein bottle, and it is shown that in a classical spacetime with multiply connected space slices having such a topology, closed timelike curves are formed. Different regions on the Klein bottle surface can be distinguished which are separated by apparent horizons fixed at particular values of the two angular variables that eneter the metric. Around the throat of this tunnel (which we denote a Klein bottlehole), the position of these horizons dictates an ordinary and exotic matter distribution such that, in addition to the known diverging lensing action of wormholes, a converging lensing action is also present at the mouths. Associated with this matter distribution, the accelerating version of this Klein bottlehole shows four distinct chronology horizons, each with its own nonchronal region. A calculation of the quantum vacuum fluctuations performed by using the regularized two-point Hadamard function shows that each chronology horizon nests a set of polarized hypersurfaces where the renormalized momentum-energy tensor diverges. This quantum instability can be prevented if we take the accelerating Klein bottlehole to be a generalization of a modified Misner space in which the period of the closed spatial direction is time-dependent. In this case, the nonchronal regions and closed timelike curves cannot exceed a minimum size of the order the Planck scale.Comment: 11 pages, RevTex, Accepted in Phys. Rev.

Wormholes and Ringholes in a Dark-Energy Universe

    Get PDF
The effects that the present accelerating expansion of the universe has on the size and shape of Lorentzian wormholes and ringholes are considered. It is shown that, quite similarly to how it occurs for inflating wormholes, relative to the initial embedding-space coordinate system, whereas the shape of the considered holes is always preserved with time, their size is driven by the expansion to increase by a factor which is proportional to the scale factor of the universe. In the case that dark energy is phantom energy, which is not excluded by present constraints on the dark-energy equation of state, that size increase with time becomes quite more remarkable, and a rather speculative scenario is here presented where the big rip can be circumvented by future advanced civilizations by utilizing sufficiently grown up wormholes and ringholes as time machines that shortcut the big-rip singularity.Comment: 11 pages, RevTex, to appear in Phys. Weak Solutions to a Nonuniformly Elliptic PDE System in the Harmonic Regime

We study the existence of weak solutions to a nonlinear strongly coupled parabolic–elliptic PDEs arising in the heating induction-conduction process of steel hardening. In this setting, our major concern is to consider the case when the electric conductivity is nonuniformly elliptic which, together with a right hand side in L1 in the energy balance equation, yields to a difficult theoretical situation. The existence result gives a weak solution to a similar PDEs system where the energy balance equation has been perturbed by a measure term.Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad MTM2010-16401Junta de Andalucía FQM-31
