Continuum physics with quenched overlap fermions

We calculate mud=(mu+md)/2m_{ud}=(m_u+m_d)/2, msm_s, fπf_\pi and fKf_K in the quenched continuum limit with UV-filtered overlap fermions. We see rather small scaling violations on lattices as coarse as a−1≃1GeVa^{-1} \simeq 1 \mathrm{GeV} and conjecture that similar advantages would be manifest in unquenched studies.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, v2: title changed and other improvements to match published versio

    Get PDF
International audienceThe prologue of this essay outlines the contemporary aspects of geomorphology. The first part recalls the two meanings of the word ‘relief’ in French. Then the paper proposes to take a fresh look on landforms and processes in geomorphology, on the one hand by deciphering the aesthetic dimension of the toposphere, on the other hand through the examination of the socio-economic status of geomorphic components of landscapes in the Anthropocene. The epilogue is an invitation to merge the outburst of emotions and the elements of understanding.

Gahalaut, Three Great Tsunamis (2013).

ABSTRACT. – Since the rifting event that occurred during Oligocene to Aquitanian times, landscape development in the southern Massif Central (France) has been driven by lithospheric processes, rather than forced by climatic or eustatic controls. Topography rose in several stages, with a record of accelerated uplift and incision from the Late Miocene onward. However, many unanswered questions still remain, particularly in relation to the endogenous causes of plateau uplift

The period from 1968 to 1981 is a crucial one in France for physical geography, between tradition and innovation. Since 1950, physical geography was confronted, scientifically and socially, to various changes in terms of concepts and theories, especially the dual revolution of systems theory and quantitative geography. In the 1970s there was an acceleration towards large international programs, globalisation and technological innovation. The paper discusses some fundamental reasons for the incomplete transformation of the French physical geography, less from lack of resources than as a result of an insufficient number of scholars to put forward the renewal of ideas

Numerical Methods for the QCD Overlap Operator IV: Hybrid Monte Carlo

The extreme computational costs of calculating the sign of the Wilson matrix within the overlap operator have so far prevented four dimensional dynamical overlap simulations on realistic lattice sizes, because the computational power required to invert the overlap operator, the time consuming part of the Hybrid Monte Carlo algorithm, is too high. In this series of papers we introduced the optimal approximation of the sign function and have been developing preconditioning and relaxation techniques which reduce the time needed for the inversion of the overlap operator by over a factor of four, bringing the simulation of dynamical overlap fermions on medium-size lattices within the range of Teraflop-computers. In this paper we adapt the HMC algorithm to overlap fermions. We approximate the matrix sign function using the Zolotarev rational approximation, treating the smallest eigenvalues of the Wilson operator exactly within the fermionic force. We then derive the fermionic force for the overlap operator, elaborating on the problem of Dirac delta-function terms from zero crossings of eigenvalues of the Wilson operator. The crossing scheme proposed shows energy violations which are better than O(Δτ2\Delta\tau^2) and thus are comparable with the violations of the standard leapfrog algorithm over the course of a trajectory. We explicitly prove that our algorithm satisfies reversibility and area conservation. Finally, we test our algorithm on small 444^4, 646^4, and 848^4 lattices at large masses.Comment: v2 60 pages; substantial changes to all parts of the article; v3 minor revsion

Exploring Addictive Online Behaviors in Patients with Narcolepsy Type 1

    Get PDF
Background: Narcolepsy type 1 (NT1) is a rare neurological sleep disorder caused by the loss of neurons that produce hypocretin—a peptide that plays a crucial role in addictive behaviors. We aimed to compare, for the first time, levels of problematic online gaming, problematic social media use, and compulsive Internet use between NT1 patients and healthy controls (HC), and to evaluate the association between anxiety, depression, and emotion dysregulation with addictive online behaviors in NT1 patients. Methods: A total of 43 patients with NT1 and 86 sex- and age-matched HC participated in an online cross-sectional survey. Results: NT1 patients did not differ from HC in terms of problematic social media use and compulsive Internet use but displayed higher levels of problematic online gaming compared to HC. Higher levels of emotion dysregulation were significantly associated with higher levels of problematic social media use and compulsive Internet use, while none of the tested factors were associated with problematic online gaming. Conclusion: NT1 patients and HC had similar levels of problematic social media use and compulsive Internet use, but NT1 patients showed higher levels of problematic online gaming. Emotion dysregulation might be an intervention target for reducing compulsive Internet use and problematic social media use
