Commissioning of the CMS Detector
The status of the commissioning of the CMS detector is summarized and some of the achievements of the past year are highlighted. Preliminary results presented in this note used the big amount of cosmic data collected during 2008 and events produced by the first LHC beams
Diagnosing transient ionization in dynamic events
The present study aims to provide a diagnostic line ratio that will enable
the observer to determine whether a plasma is in a state of transient
ionization. We use the Atomic Data and Analysis Structure (ADAS) to calculate
line contribution functions for two lines, Si IV 1394 A and O IV 1401 A, formed
in the solar transition region. The generalized collisional-radiative theory is
used. It includes all radiative and electron collisional processes, except for
photon-induced processes. State-resolved direct ionization and recombination to
and from the next ionization stage are also taken into account. For dynamic
bursts with a decay time of a few seconds, the Si IV 1394 A line can be
enhanced by a factor of 2-4 in the first fraction of a second with the peak in
the line contribution function occurring initially at a higher electron
temperature due to transient ionization compared to ionization equilibrium
conditions. On the other hand, the O IV 1401 A does not show such any
enhancement. Thus the ratio of these two lines, which can be observed with the
Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph, can be used as a diagnostic of transient
ionization. We show that simultaneous high-cadence observations of two lines
formed in the solar transition region may be used as a direct diagnostic of
whether the observed plasma is in transient ionization. The ratio of these two
lines can change by a factor of four in a few seconds owing to transient

The supergiant fast X-ray transients XTE J1739-302 and IGR J08408-4503 in quiescence with XMM-Newton
Context. Supergiant fast X-ray transients are a subclass of high mass X-ray
binaries that host a neutron star accreting mass from the wind of its OB
supergiant companion. They are characterized by an extremely pronounced and
rapid variability in X-rays, which still lacks an unambiguous interpretation. A
number of deep pointed observations with XMM-Newton have been carried out to
study the quiescent emission of these sources and gain insight into the
mechanism that causes their X-ray variability. Aims. We continued this study by
using three XMM-Newton observations of the two supergiant fast X-ray transient
prototypes XTEJ1739-302 and IGR J08408-4503 in quiescence. Methods. An in-depth
timing and spectral analysis of these data have been carried out. Results. We
found that the quiescent emission of these sources is characterized by both
complex timing and spectral variability, with multiple small flares occurring
sporadically after periods of lower X-ray emission. Some evidence is found in
the XMM-Newton spectra of a soft component below ~2 keV, similar to that
observed in the two supergiant fast X-ray transients AXJ1845.0-0433 and
IGRJ16207-5129 and in many other high mass X-ray binaries. Conclusions.We
suggest some possible interpretations of the timing and spectral properties of
the quiescent emission of XTEJ1739- 302 and IGR J08408-4503 in the context of
the different theoretical models proposed to interpret the behavior of the

The Great Space Weather Event during February 1872 Recorded in East Asia
The study of historical great geomagnetic storms is crucial for assessing the
possible risks to the technological infrastructure of a modern society, caused
by extreme space-weather events. The normal benchmark has been the great
geomagnetic storm of September 1859, the so-called "Carrington Event". However,
there are numerous records of another great geomagnetic storm in February 1872.
This storm, about 12 years after the Carrington Event, resulted in comparable
magnetic disturbances and auroral displays over large areas of the Earth. We
have revisited this great geomagnetic storm in terms of the auroral and sunspot
records in the historical documents from East Asia. In particular, we have
surveyed the auroral records from East Asia and estimated the equatorward
boundary of the auroral oval to be near 24.3 deg invariant latitude (ILAT), on
the basis that the aurora was seen near the zenith at Shanghai (20 deg magnetic
latitude, MLAT). These results confirm that this geomagnetic storm of February
1872 was as extreme as the Carrington Event, at least in terms of the
equatorward motion of the auroral oval. Indeed, our results support the
interpretation of the simultaneous auroral observations made at Bombay (10 deg
MLAT). The East Asian auroral records have indicated extreme brightness,
suggesting unusual precipitation of high-intensity, low-energy electrons during
this geomagnetic storm. We have compared the duration of the East Asian auroral
displays with magnetic observations in Bombay and found that the auroral
displays occurred in the initial phase, main phase, and early recovery phase of

Scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy studies of graphite edges
We studied experimentally and theoretically the electronic local density of
states (LDOS) near single step edges at the surface of exfoliated graphite. In
scanning tunneling microscopy measurements, we observed the and honeycomb superstructures extending over 34 nm
both from the zigzag and armchair edges. Calculations based on a
density-functional derived non-orthogonal tight-binding model show that these
superstructures can coexist if the two types of edges admix each other in real
graphite step edges. Scanning tunneling spectroscopy measurements near the
zigzag edge reveal a clear peak in the LDOS at an energy below the Fermi energy
by 20 meV. No such a peak was observed near the armchair edge. We concluded
that this peak corresponds to the "edge state" theoretically predicted for
graphene ribbons, since a similar prominent LDOS peak due to the edge state is

Freestyle-Like V-Y Flaps of the Eyebrow: A New Outlook and Indication of an Historical Technique
The eyebrow region is of utmost importance for facial movement, symmetry, and the overall cosmetic appearance of the face. Trauma or tumor resection often leave scars that may dislocate the eyebrow producing an alteration both in static symmetry of the face and in the dynamic expressivity. The authors present a technique for eyebrow's defects repair using the remaining eyebrow advancement by means of a "freestyle-like" V-Y flap. In the past two years a total of eight consecutive patients underwent excision of skin lesions in the superciliary region and immediate reconstruction with this technique. On histology, six patients were affected from basal cell carcinomas, one from squamous cell carcinoma, and one from congenital intradermal melanocytic nevus. The pedicle of the flap included perforators from the supratrochlear, supraorbital, or superficial temporalis artery. Advancement of the entire aesthetic subunit that includes the eyebrow using a V-Y perforator flap was performed successfully in all cases achieving full, tension-free closure of defects up to 3.0\u2009cm. "Freestyle-like" V-Y flaps should be considered as a first-line choice for partial defects of the eyebrow. The greater mobility compared to random subcutaneous flaps allows to reconstruct large defects providing an excellent cosmetic result
Static and vibration analysis of functionally graded beams using refined shear deformation theory
Static and vibration analysis of functionally graded beams using refined shear deformation theory is presented. The developed theory, which does not require shear correction factor, accounts for shear deformation effect and coupling coming from the material anisotropy. Governing equations of motion are derived from the Hamilton's principle. The resulting coupling is referred to as triply coupled axial-flexural response. A two-noded Hermite-cubic element with five degree-of-freedom per node is developed to solve the problem. Numerical results are obtained for functionally graded beams with simply-supported, cantilever-free and clamped-clamped boundary conditions to investigate effects of the power-law exponent and modulus ratio on the displacements, natural frequencies and corresponding mode shapes
XMM-Newton observations of IGRJ18410-0535: The ingestion of a clump by a supergiant fast X-ray transient
IGRJ18410-0535 is a supergiant fast X-ray transients. This subclass of
supergiant X-ray binaries typically undergoes few- hour-long outbursts reaching
luminosities of 10^(36)-10^(37) erg/s, the occurrence of which has been
ascribed to the combined effect of the intense magnetic field and rotation of
the compact object hosted in them and/or the presence of dense structures
("clumps") in the wind of their supergiant companion. IGR J18410-0535 was
observed for 45 ks by XMM-Newton as part of a program designed to study the
quiescent emission of supergiant fast X-ray transients and clarify the origin
of their peculiar X-ray variability. We carried out an in-depth spectral and
timing analysis of these XMM-Newton data. IGR J18410-0535 underwent a bright
X-ray flare that started about 5 ks after the beginning of the observation and
lasted for \sim15 ks. Thanks to the capabilities of the instruments on-board
XMM-Newton, the whole event could be followed in great detail. The results of
our analysis provide strong convincing evidence that the flare was produced by
the accretion of matter from a massive clump onto the compact object hosted in
this system. By assuming that the clump is spherical and moves at the same
velocity as the homogeneous stellar wind, we estimate a mass and radius of Mcl
\simeq1.4\times10^(22) g and Rcl \simeq8\times10^(11) cm. These are in
qualitative agreement with values expected from theoretical calculations. We
found no evidence of pulsations at \sim4.7 s after investigating coherent
modulations in the range 3.5 ms-100 s. A reanalysis of the archival ASCA and
Swift data of IGR J18410-0535, for which these pulsations were previously
detected, revealed that they were likely to be due to a statistical fluctuation

This paper takes as its focus the Midland Group Gallery in order to first, make a case for the consideration of the geographies of art galleries. Second, highlight the importance of galleries in the context of cultural geographies of the sixties. Third, discuss the role of provinciality in the operation of art worlds. In so doing it explicates one set of geographies surrounding the gallery
– those of the local, regional and international networks that connected to produce art works and art space. It reveals how the interactions between places and practices outside of metropolitan and regional hierarchies provides a more nuanced insight into how art worlds operated during the
sixties, a period of growing internationalism of art, and how contested definitions of the provincial played an integral role in this. The paper charts the operations of the Midland Group Gallery and the spaces that it occupied to demonstrate how it was representative of a post-war
discourse of provincialism and a corresponding re-evaluation of regional cultural activity
Urinary pyridinoline cross-links as biomarkers of osteogenesis imperfecta.
Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is a group of genetic heterogeneous connective tissue disorders characterized by increased bone fragility and susceptibility to fractures. Laboratory diagnosis relies on time-consuming and cost-intensive biochemical and molecular genetics analyses. Therefore, it is desirable to identify and establish new diagnostic markers for OI that are reliable, cost-effective and easily accessible. In our study we have identified the ratio of the urinary pyridinoline cross-links lysyl-pyridinoline and hydroxylysyl-pyridinoline as a promising, time- and cost-effective biomarker for osteogenesis imperfecta, that could be used furthermore to investigate cases of suspected non-accidental injury in infants
