Hydration and the true water content of swellable clay minerals
Water affects biological, chemical and transportation processes as well as mechanical properties of soils. Thereby, clay mineral content determines the moisture balance of soils. In-situ moisture measurements depend on reliable calibration based on the true water content. Drying the soil at 105 °C is the most common procedure to determine the water content although it is known, swellable clay minerals retain hydration water up to much higher temperatures.
The amplified water uptake and retention by swellable clay minerals results from hydration of interlayer cations. Thereby, the water binding mechanisms are complex due to structural heterogeneity and are determined by layer charge density and location of substitutions. While several experimental studies deal with the maximum water uptake of selected smectites and heating conditions for full dehydration a comprehensive understanding of the relation between the structure of smectites and water uptake/release is still missing.
The Na-saturated smectite / water interface for the montmorillonite-beidellite series is investigated in the present work within the density functional theory (DFT). Layer charge is varied between 0.125 and 0.5 per formula unit [O10(OH)2] by substitution of Al3+ by Mg2+ in the octahedral sheet (montmorillonites) and by substitution of Si4+ by Al3+ in the tetrahedral sheets (beidellites). Starting from the water free supercells (with integer molar ratios), the number of water molecules is increased discretely. Stable hydration states (1H to 3H) do not necessarily correspond to the formation of water layers (1W to 3W) in the interlayer, which is deduced from the development of the basal spaces during hydration. With the help of ab initio thermodynamics, the energy states are related to temperature, and partial pressure of H2O and the resulting phase diagrams revealed hydration state in dependence of relative humidity (RH) as well as necessary temperatures for full dehydration to determine the true water content. Thereby it was shown that 2:1 layer silicates with a layer charge of 0.125 are swellable but reach only the 1H state even at 100% RH, but the removal of water molecules from the interlayer requires temperatures >110 °C and partial pressures of water <100 Pa. In contrast water uptake of smectites with layer charge 0.375 requires RH of >11% at room temperature, but dehydration occurs at moderate heating
Epitaxial hybrid pixel with triggerless readout in 130nm Cmos technology for the Micro Vertex Detector of the Panda experiment
The Micro Vertex Detector (MVD) is the innermost one of the Panda experiment, sitting around the beam pipe. The sensors are arranged in a barrel section with two pixel and two strip layers, and 6 forward disks with mixed pixel and microstrip sensors. For the pixel detector part, a hybrid solution with thinned epitaxial sensors was chosen. The main requirements for the readout include: a pixel size of 100 · 100 μm2, an input charge measurement with 12 b that implies an amplitude resolution of 1 part out of 4096, a working frequency of 155.5MHz, and a triggerless acquisition. The readout of the pixel detector is based on a front end chip, named Topix, that is under development. The Asic will provide the time position with a resolution of 6.43 ns and a charge measurement with a Time Over Threshold (TOT) technique; it features a matrix of 116 · 110 pixel cell channels and 311 Mb/s serializers as output ports. A 130nm Cmos technology has been used to reduce the
circuit size and to provide tolerance for the total dose, besides techniques against single event upset have been implemented. A Topix prototype with the full cell has been completely tested for radiation damage before and after irradiation, and a new release has been submitted to build an hybrid assembly. The stringent requirements in terms of space for the MVD lead to an architecture based on optical links. Forensic applications of micro-computed tomography: a systematic review
Purpose: The aim of this systematic review was to provide a comprehensive overview of micro-CT current applications in forensic pathology, anthropology, odontology, and neonatology. Methods: A bibliographic research on the electronic databases Pubmed and Scopus was conducted in the time frame 01/01/2001–31/12/2021 without any language restrictions and applying the following free-text search strategy: “(micro-computed tomography OR micro-CT) AND (forensic OR legal)”. The following inclusion criteria were used: (A) English language; (B) Application of micro-CT to biological and/or non-biological materials to address at least one forensic issue (e.g., age estimation, identification of post-mortem interval). The papers selected by three independent investigators have been then classified according to the investigated materials. Results: The bibliographic search provided 651 records, duplicates excluded. After screening for title and/or abstracts, according to criteria A and B, 157 full-text papers were evaluated for eligibility. Ninety-three papers, mostly (64) published between 2017 and 2021, were included; considering that two papers investigated several materials, an overall amount of 99 classifiable items was counted when referring to the materials investigated. It emerged that bones and cartilages (54.55%), followed by teeth (13.13%), were the most frequently analyzed materials. Moreover, micro-CT allowed the collection of structural, qualitative and/or quantitative information also for soft tissues, fetuses, insects, and foreign materials. Conclusion: Forensic applications of micro-CT progressively increased in the last 5 years with very promising results. According to this evidence, we might expect in the near future a shift of its use from research purposes to clinical forensic cases

An unusual case of corpse concealment driven by emotional distress
Corpse concealment involves hiding a body for criminal purposes for many different reasons, such as destroy evidence of a murder or avoid the discovery of the victim. Although defendants could argue that they did not conceal the corpse with any criminal intent, but rather to spare themselves or others from emotional distress or to honor the wishes of the deceased. However, these arguments are often challenging to substantiate, and defendants may encounter significant legal obstacles when attempting to justify their actions. Herein, we report a case involving the concealment of a woman's corpse by her father. Autopsy and histological investigations were significantly limited due to the advanced decomposition of the body. Nevertheless, by integrating these data with radiological findings obtained from total body CT and micro-CT of the larynx-hyoid complex, hanging was deemed the cause of death. Additionally, the psychological evaluation of the father indicated that the act of concealment was motivated by emotions rather than criminal intent
Lenalidomide normalizes tumor vessels in colorectal cancer improving chemotherapy activity
BACKGROUND: Angiogenesis inhibition is a promising approach for treating metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC). Recent evidences support the seemingly counterintuitive ability of certain antiangiogenic drugs to promote normalization of residual tumor vessels with important clinical implications. Lenalidomide is an oral drug with immune-modulatory and anti-angiogenic activity against selected hematologic malignancies but as yet little is known regarding its effectiveness for solid tumors. The aim of this study was to determine whether lenalidomide can normalize colorectal cancer neo-vessels in vivo, thus reducing tumor hypoxia and improving the benefit of chemotherapy. METHODS: We set up a tumorgraft model with NOD/SCID mice implanted with a patient-derived colorectal cancer liver metastasis. The mice were treated with oral lenalidomide (50 mg/Kg/day for 28 days), intraperitoneal 5-fluorouracil (5FU) (20 mg/Kg twice weekly for 3 weeks), combination (combo) of lenalidomide and 5FU or irrelevant vehicle. We assessed tumor vessel density (CD146), pericyte coverage (NG2; alphaSMA), in vivo perfusion capability of residual vessels (lectin distribution essay), hypoxic areas (HP2-100 Hypoxyprobe) and antitumor activity in vivo and in vitro. RESULTS: Treatment with lenalidomide reduced tumor vessel density (p = 0.0001) and enhanced mature pericyte coverage of residual vessels (p = 0.002). Perfusion capability of tumor vessels was enhanced in mice treated with lenalidomide compared to controls (p = 0.004). Accordingly, lenalidomide reduced hypoxic tumor areas (p = 0.002) and enhanced the antitumor activity of 5FU in vivo. The combo treatment delayed tumor growth (p = 0.01) and significantly reduced the Ki67 index (p = 0.0002). Lenalidomide alone did not demonstrate antitumor activity compared to untreated controls in vivo or against 4 different mCRC cell lines in vitro. CONCLUSIONS: We provide the first evidence of tumor vessel normalization and hypoxia reduction induced by lenalidomide in mCRC in vivo. This effect, seemingly counterintuitive for an antiangiogenic compound, translates into indirect antitumor activity thus enhancing the therapeutic index of chemotherapy. Our findings suggest that further research should be carried out on synergism between lenalidomide and conventional therapies for treating solid tumors that might benefit from tumor vasculature normalization
