Real and strongly real classes in PGL<i>n(q)</i> and quasi-simple covers of PSL<i>n(q)</i>

We classify the real and strongly real conjugacy classes in PGLn(q), PSLn(q) and all quasi-simple covers of PSLn(q). In each case we give a formula for the number of real, and the number of strongly real, conjugacy classes. This is a companion paper to [Gill and Singh, J. Group Theory, May 2011, 14:3, pp.437-459] in which we classified the real and strongly real conjugacy classes in GLn(q) and SLn(q)

Anomalous growth of single ice crystals in solution

It is shown that major discrepancies exist between experiments and theory for ice crystal growth from solution. Accurate data, taken in a microgravity environment, approximate analytical models, and exact (probably numerical) models all are needed to advance our understanding of ice crystal growth phenomena. A new approximate semi-empirical theory is presented which predicts that a relatively sharp transition from natural convection control to diffusion control for ice growth in pure water occurs at a subcooling of about 10 C (a reduced temperature difference of about 0.125). No reliable data exist to test this prediction. The theory also predicts qualitatively the growth of ice in NaCl solution in which maxima in the growth rates are observed at various levels of subcooling

A study of the very high order natural user language (with AI capabilities) for the NASA space station common module

    Get PDF
The requirements are identified for a very high order natural language to be used by crew members on board the Space Station. The hardware facilities, databases, realtime processes, and software support are discussed. The operations and capabilities that will be required in both normal (routine) and abnormal (nonroutine) situations are evaluated. A structure and syntax for an interface (front-end) language to satisfy the above requirements are recommended

Presentational State Power: Temporal and Spatial Influences Over Asylum Sector Decision Makers

This is the author's post-print version of an article published in Transactions of the Institute of British Geographers, 2009, Vol. 34, Issue 2, pp. 215 – 233 Copyright © 2009 Institute of British Geographers / Royal Geographical Society. The definitive version is available at www3.interscience.wiley.comPrevious analyses of forced migration have drawn attention to the increasing discretion held by asylum sector decisionmakers. According to these accounts, as the state reacts to the political risks associated with asylum migration control, responsibility for forced migration management is increasingly transferred onto a range of intermediate actors, between state and society, including local government employees, asylum interviewers, immigration judges and security staff. Yet little research has directly addressed these intermediaries' collective experiences and the influences to which they are subject. The article therefore focuses attention explicitly upon the nominal conduct of this increasingly authorised, discretionary and highly heterogeneous population. Drawing upon 37 interviews across four sites at which asylum sector intermediaries have significant and increasing discretion over asylum seekers' experiences, the findings demonstrate the importance of institutionalised timing and spacing for the determination of their volitional conduct. The timing and spacing of government institutions are important, not only through their influence over asylum seekers directly, but also because they present asylum seekers to those with discretionary authority in ways that are conducive to exclusionary uses of this authority

The Correlation of Reading Rate with Intelligence Scores of Grade School Children After Training in Phonics

It is generally conceded that one learns more through the use of the eyes than through any of the other sense organs. Much of this visual learning is the result of reading. The present study was undertaken to try to determine if special training in phonics would improve reading ability, since there has been some difference of opinion concerning the value of phonics as an aid in teaching reading
