Prevalence of Panton-valentine gene in Staphylococcus aureus isolated from clinical samples and healthy carriers in Gorgan city, north of Iran
Aim. Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) is a nosocomial and community acquired pathogen. S. aureus is a pathogen that causes several types of disease from skin infections to systemic diseases that is because of having several virulence factors such as enzymes, toxins, superantigens and Panton-Valentine leukocidin (pvl). pvl is a bi-component leukotoxin that destroy PMNs and monocytes and causes furunculosis, abscesses and necrotizing soft tissue infections in patients without any risk factors for such infections. The goal of this study was determine the prevalence of pvl gene in S. aureus isolated from patients and healthy carriers in Gorgan city, north of Iran. Methods. One hundred seventy isolates of S. aureus, 95 from patients and 75 healthy carriers, were collected during one year. After identification and purification, DNA extraction was done by phenol-chloroform method. Amplification of pvl gene was done by specific primer and polymerase chain reaction method. Results. Among the 170 isolates of S. aureus, 20 contained pvl gene. The frequency of isolates contained pvl gene in MRSA and MSSA isolates were 21.6, 19.3, which was not statistically significant. The frequency of these genes was not related to age, sex and source of isolation from patients. Conclusion. Comparison of ferment sugars, produce hemolysis and measuring growth in methicillin-resistant and methicillin-sensitive Staphylococcus aureus isolates from inpatients and healthcare workers in Gorgan Hospitals, North of Iran
The mec A gene in Staphylococcus aureus leads to production of new penicillin-binding protein called PBP2a.This change may follow some changes in other phenotypes. The aim of this study was the comparison of Ferment Sugars, Produce Hemolysis and Measuring Growth in MRSA and MSSA isolates. 188 Staphylococcus aureus isolates separated from inpatients and healthcare workers (healthy carriers)were studied.Bacterialcultures in blood agar environment at 37°C during 24h and at 4°C during other 24h were applied for studying hemolysis. Sugar fermentation carried out in phenol red Broth medium, containing glucose, galactose, arabinose, fructose, xylose, ramnose, mannose, sucrose, trehalose, raffinose or maltose. For determining bacterial growth,bacterial concentration of 103was taken each hour during 12 cultured in MHAand colonies were counted after 24h.The mean amount of hemolysis diameter in MRSA isolates was rather more than that of MSSA isolates. The difference between MRSA and MSSA isolates were significant as to fermenting ramnose, trehalose, galactose and xylose. The mean rate of growth in MRSAwere significantly different from that of MSSAisolates (p<0.05).Resistance to methicillin in Staphylococcus aureus isolates accompanies the increase of ability to ferment sugars. This phenomenon may be one of reasons for increased pathogenicity of MRSA isolates; So results shows the logarithmic phase is longer in MRSA isolates, This may implicate that PBP2a production in methicillin-resistant isolates follows slowing down nutrients entrance into the bacterium that in turn may causes slow growth
Strain-induced Evolution of Electronic Band Structures in a Twisted Graphene Bilayer
Here we study the evolution of local electronic properties of a twisted
graphene bilayer induced by a strain and a high curvature. The strain and
curvature strongly affect the local band structures of the twisted graphene
bilayer; the energy difference of the two low-energy van Hove singularities
decreases with increasing the lattice deformations and the states condensed
into well-defined pseudo-Landau levels, which mimic the quantization of massive
Dirac fermions in a magnetic field of about 100 T, along a graphene wrinkle.
The joint effect of strain and out-of-plane distortion in the graphene wrinkle
also results in a valley polarization with a significant gap, i.e., the
eight-fold degenerate Landau level at the charge neutrality point is splitted
into two four-fold degenerate quartets polarized on each layer. These results
suggest that strained graphene bilayer could be an ideal platform to realize
the high-temperature zero-field quantum valley Hall effect.Comment: 4 figure
Theory of extraordinary optical transmission through subwavelength hole arrays
We present a fully three-dimensional theoretical study of the extraordinary
transmission of light through subwavelength hole arrays in optically thick
metal films. Good agreement is obtained with experimental data. An analytical
minimal model is also developed, which conclusively shows that the enhancement
of transmission is due to tunneling through surface plasmons formed on each
metal-dielectric interfaces. Different regimes of tunneling (resonant through a
''surface plasmon molecule", or sequential through two isolated surface
plasmons) are found depending on the geometrical parameters defining the

Tunneling Conductance of The Graphene SNS Junction with a Single Localized Defect
We study the electronic transport in a graphene-based
superconductor-normal(graphene)-superconductor (SNS) junction by use of the
Dirac-Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation. We consider the properties of tunneling
conductance through an undoped strip of graphene with heavily doped
superconducting electrodes in the dirty limit. We find that spectrum of Andreev
bound states are modified in the presence of single localized defect in the
bulk. The minimum tunneling conductance remains the same and this result
doesn't depend on the actual location of the imperfection.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figure
Assessment of the association between body composition and risk of non-alcoholic fatty liver
Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is defined as the condition of fat accumulation in the liver. This cross-sectional study aimed to investigate the relationship between body composition and fatty liver and determine of cut-off point for predicting NAFLD. Samples were selected from the nutrition clinic from 2016 to 2017 in Tehran, Iran. The liver steatosis was calculated using the CAP score through the FiroScan� and body composition was measured using the dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry scan method. A total of 2160 patients participated in this study, 745 (34.5) subjects had NAFLD. We found that fat-free tissue was inversely and fat tissue was directly correlated with the risk of NAFLD in almost all factors and the risk of developing NAFLD increases if the total fat exceeds 32.23 and 26.73 in women and men and abdominal fat exceeds 21.42 and 13.76 in women and men, respectively. Finally, we realized that the total fat percent had the highest AUC (0.932 for men and 0.917 for women) to predict the risk of NAFLD. Overall, the likelihood of NAFLD development rose significantly with increasing the amount of total fat and abdominal fat from the cut-off point level. Copyright: © 2021 Ariya et al. Sub-threshold depression and antidepressants use in a community sample: searching anxiety and finding bipolar disorder
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>To determine the use of antidepressants (ADs) in people with sub-threshold depression (SD); the lifetime prevalence of mania and hypomania in SD and the link between ADs use, bipolarity and anxiety disorders in SD.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Study design: community survey. Study population: samples randomly drawn, after stratification from the adult population of municipal records. Sample size: 4999 people from seven areas within six Italian regions. Tools: Questionnaire on psychotropic drug consumption, prescription; Structured Clinical Interview NP for DSM-IV modified (ANTAS); Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAM-D); Mood Disorder Questionnaire (MDQ); Short Form Health Survey (SF-12). SD definition: HAM-D > 10 without lifetime diagnosis of Depressive Episode (DE).</p> <p>Results</p> <p>SD point prevalence is 5.0%. The lifetime prevalence of mania and hypomania episodes in SD is 7.3%. Benzodiazepines (BDZ) consumption in SD is 24.1%, followed by ADs (19.7%). In SD, positive for MDQ and comorbidity with Panic Disorder (PD) or Generalized Anxiety Disorders (GAD) are associated with ADs use, whereas the association between a positive MDQ and ADs use, without a diagnosis of PD or GAD, is not significant. Only in people with DE the well-being (SF-12) is higher among those using first-line antidepressants compared to those not using any medication. In people with SD no significant differences were found in terms of SF-12 score according to drug use.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>This study suggests caution in prescribing ADs to people with SD. In people with concomitant anxiety disorders and SD, it should be mandatory to perform a well-designed assessment and evaluate the presence of previous manic or hypomanic symptoms prior to prescribing ADs.</p
Classification of bipolar disorder in psychiatric hospital. a prospective cohort study
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>This study has explored the classification of bipolar disorder in psychiatric hospital. A review of the literature reveals that there is a need for studies using stringent methodological approaches.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>480 first-time admitted patients to psychiatric hospital were found eligible and 271 of these gave written informed consent. The study sample was comprised of 250 patients (52%) with hospital diagnoses. For the study, expert diagnoses were given on the basis of a structured diagnostic interview (M.I.N.I.PLUS) and retrospective review of patient records.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Agreement between the expert's and the clinicians' diagnoses was estimated using Cohen's kappa statistics. 76% of the primary diagnoses given by the expert were in the affective spectrum. Agreement concerning these disorders was moderate (kappa ranging from 0.41 to 0.47). Of 58 patients with bipolar disorder, only 17 received this diagnosis in the clinic. Almost all patients with a current manic episode were classified as currently manic by the clinicians. Forty percent diagnosed as bipolar by the expert, received a diagnosis of unipolar depression by the clinician. Fifteen patients (26%) were not given a diagnosis of affective disorder at all.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Our results indicate a considerable misclassification of bipolar disorder in psychiatric hospital, mainly in patients currently depressed. The importance of correctly diagnosing bipolar disorder should be emphasized both for clinical, administrative and research purposes. The findings questions the validity of psychiatric case registers. There are potential benefits in structuring the diagnostic process better in the clinic.</p
Lifshitz spacetimes from AdS null and cosmological solutions
We describe solutions of 10-dimensional supergravity comprising null
deformations of with a scalar field, which have
Lifshitz symmetries. The bulk Lifshitz geometry in 3+1-dimensions arises by
dimensional reduction of these solutions. The dual field theory in this case is
a deformation of the N=4 super Yang-Mills theory. We discuss the holographic
2-point function of operators dual to bulk scalars. We further describe
time-dependent (cosmological) solutions which have anisotropic Lifshitz scaling
symmetries. We also discuss deformations of in 11-dimensional
supergravity, which are somewhat similar to the solutions above. In some cases
here, we expect the field theory duals to be deformations of the Chern-Simons
