Heat fluctuations for harmonic oscillators
Heat fluctuations of a harmonic oscillator in contact with a thermostat and
driven out of equilibrium by an external deterministic force are studied
experimentally and theoretically within the context of Fluctuation Theorems. We
consider the case of a periodic forcing of the oscillator, and we calculate the
analytic probability density function of heat fluctuations. The limit of large
time is discussed and we show that heat fluctuations satisfy the conventional
fluctuation theorem, even if a different fluctuation relation exists for this
quantity. Experimental results are also given for a transient state.Comment: Submitted to Europhysics Letter
Scaling of Information in Turbulence
We propose a new perspective on Turbulence using Information Theory. We
compute the entropy rate of a turbulent velocity signal and we particularly
focus on its dependence on the scale. We first report how the entropy rate is
able to describe the distribution of information amongst scales, and how one
can use it to isolate the injection, inertial and dissipative ranges, in
perfect agreement with the Batchelor model and with a fBM model. In a second
stage, we design a conditioning procedure in order to finely probe the
asymmetries in the statistics that are responsible for the energy cascade. Our
approach is very generic and can be applied to any multiscale complex system.Comment: in Europhysics Letters, 201
Nonequilibrium fluctuations in a resistor
International audienceIn small systems where relevant energies are comparable to thermal agitation, fluctuations are of the order of average values. In systems in thermodynamical equilibrium, the variance of these fluctuations can be related to the dissipation constant in the system, exploiting the Fluctuation-Dissipation Theorem (FDT). In non-equilibrium steady systems, Fluctuations Theorems (FT) additionally describe symmetry properties of the probability density functions (PDFs) of the fluctuations of injected and dissipated energies. We experimentally probe a model system: an electrical dipole driven out of equilibrium by a small constant current , and show that FT are experimentally accessible and valid. Furthermore, we stress that FT can be used to measure the dissipated power in the system by just studying the PDFs symmetries
Spatiotemporal chaos: the microscopic perspective
PACS numbers: 05.45.JnInternational audienceExtended nonequilibrium systems can be studied in the framework of field theory or from dynamical systems perspective. Here we report numerical evidence that the sum of a well-defined number of instantaneous Lyapunov exponents for the complex Ginzburg-Landau equation is given by a simple function of the space average of the square of the macroscopic field. This relationship follows from an explicit formula for the time-dependent values of almost all the exponents
Entropy production and time asymmetry in nonequilibrium fluctuations
The time-reversal symmetry of nonequilibrium fluctuations is experimentally
investigated in two out-of-equilibrium systems namely, a Brownian particle in a
trap moving at constant speed and an electric circuit with an imposed mean
current. The dynamical randomness of their nonequilibrium fluctuations is
characterized in terms of the standard and time-reversed entropies per unit
time of dynamical systems theory. We present experimental results showing that
their difference equals the thermodynamic entropy production in units of
Boltzmann's constant
Shells and feeding bottles: continuity or breach between Greece and Rome?
The presence of these feeding bottles deposited in graves of Roman Gaul brings forth questions regarding such practice, as the analyses of the contents lead us to link them more to body care. The presence of shells in some of the feeding bottle graves also brings us to consider these assemblages from a gender perspective, due to the attribution of shells to mundus muliebris.
Fluctuation-dissipation relation on a Melde string in a turbulent flow, considerations on a "dynamical temperature"
3,5 new printed pagesWe report on measurements of the transverse fluctuations of a string in a turbulent air jet flow. Harmonic modes are excited by the fluctuating drag force, at different wave-numbers. This simple mechanical probe makes it possible to measure excitations of the flow at specific scales, averaged over space and time: it is a scale-resolved, global measurement. We also measure the dissipation associated to the string motion, and we consider the ratio of the fluctuations over dissipation (FDR). In an exploratory approach, we investigate the concept of {\it effective temperature} defined through the FDR. We compare our observations with other definitions of temperature in turbulence. From the theory of Kolmogorov (), we derive the exponent expected for the spectrum of the fluctuations. This simple model and our experimental results are in good agreement, over the range of wave-numbers, and Reynolds number accessible ()
